I see from bustimes.org that Arriva (Southend-on-Sea) have a training bus traversing roads around Southchurch. Are Arriva planning to introduce new routes into this area?
I wouldn’t read too much into that. the driver trainer probably just fancied going somewhere different. I can remember back in 1990 seeing a Southend Transport driver trainer bus in Melbourne Farm Estate in Chelmsford. It was their Leyland Titan PD2 or PD3

Thanks for that. I hope the trainee enjoyed going along North Avenue. Other operators have given up on that stretch because of parked vehicles.

Having been on holiday in Norfolk this past week, I was impressed with the buses as they seemed to be frequent and well used. They also on the whole seemed to be well presented too.

Which operator are you referring to?

Sanders seemed to have a smart fleet when I was in Cromer last year.

I was going to suggest that Lynx and Sanders were the ones. They are excellent firms. BorderBus gets a bit of enthusiast love but in my limited experience, they're decent but not exceptional.

First Eastern Counties was one of the better OpCos. The Excel route (Kings Lynn depot) is good, and so are the Norwich operations in the main. Unfortunately, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft have a bit of a rag tag bunch of cascaded B9s that look quite scruffy and the loss of many of the Coastlink e400s means the X1/X11 are in the hands of those same B9s and it's a step down. Even Konectbus (now TMS) was ok.

I love Norfolk and, it has to be said, it benefits from a pro Public Transport council

Central Connect incorporating Konnectbuses have now unveiled their new customer promise which contains among other things

We promise that our buses will be safe, clean and comfortable. We clean our buses every day and they undergo detailed safety inspections from qualified mechanics every four to six weeks. We invest heavily every year in brand new buses to keep our average fleet age low, and almost all of our fleet now have USB charging sockets, leather seats and wood effect flooring, to keep you charged up and comfortable on the move. We also provide printed timetable leaflets on board our buses so you can find out what time your bus home is!

Words like the above are meaningless when they do not reflect what passengers see on the ground. It's like an alternative reality.

Less PR guff please saying they provide things, time to actually start doing it.

Almost all…….USB charging….leather seats? Someone is delusional. Or they haven’t been to Norfolk, Suffolk or Essex.

Looks like it's been copy and pasted from the old Central Connect site without much thought. The Central Connect on the west Essex and Hertfordshire side is at least much more akin to whats been claimed, it would be wonderful to see that matched on the new acquisitions though, Norfolk and Suffolk and to be fair Tendering could all do with similar treatment. Just doesn't look very good that they've jumped the gun with big claims in my opinion.

Please note: our Passenger Promise is a commitment to our passengers as part of our desire to provide excellent customer service. However, it does not form part of our Terms and Conditions of Carriage and does not affect or vary any contract which may be or become in place between Central Connect and any passenger or third party. Your statutory rights are not affected.
It’s a statement of what they intend to do. Given what we know of the operation and its history over the last decade, any sort of desire to improve things should be welcomed

First in Norwich have really pulled their socks up over the past 8 years ago, ancient buses retired and punctuality much improved. The drivers seem much happier and friendlier too. The grants for the electric buses and extended routes helped of course but it's quite nice to travel on now, when it really wasn't for the latter 00's and early 10's.

The less said about the sorry state of what's left of Anglian and Konect the better. Probably going to get worse after one of their life expired vehicles burnt itself to the ground the other week, the driver has quit too (he ran a story in the local rag).

The text on their promise has a present tense though, if that was the case it should be in future tense.

It's the same kind of thing as their 'customer obsession' that they claim to have, all PR dressing, all style no substance.

Long suffering customers in East Anglia and especially Suffolk would prefer they walk the walk rather than just talk the talk.

Said story can be found here for those interested, quite a damming read:

A bus driver has resigned after more than 20 years behind the wheel, claiming he was left without support when his vehicle burst into flames on the A47 because he believes depot staff were watching the England game.

https://www.eveningnews24.co.uk/news/26260476.bus-driver-resigns-huge-fire-a47-near-norwich/

Surprised that Dereham is now classed as a “smaller” depot and isn’t fully staffed, considering it was back in the good days of Konectbus, one presumes operations are now managed from Diss under TMS?

I'm no apologist for operators but they inherited a basket case from Go Ahead. It was 9 months ago. That's no time at all especially when you're integrating operations. Given the almost total lack of investment in Go East Anglia (was it 3 new vehicles in 8 years?), I'd be curious to know exactly what people were expecting in that time?

As for all PR dressing and style without substance... have you seen what they did with the former Galleon/(T)rustybus/Central Connect operation in Essex? Now, I don't know how sustainable all that investment has been in what has been a tough area of Essex/Herts but to say that they are just PR isn't true.

I don't think they've covered themselves in glory with the Chelmsford shenanigans - that's just dumb pride getting in the way of sensible business decisions and wasting management time, and operational resources, to prove a point! However, after seeing the succession of ex London tat cascaded into Essex being followed by some of the shabbiest ex Brighton stuff over the last ten years, it seems that TMS are being held to a much higher standard than Go Ahead ever were.

Don't think it's been reported on the forum yet but Stephensons of Essex appear to have won the tender for the Colchester park and ride contract currently operated by Arriva (see report "321-02-07-26 EDD" at this link).
Agree to the award of a contract for bus services element of the Colchester Park and Ride (P&R) to Stephenson’s of Essex for a period of four-years from 26 September 2026 at a cost of £2,561,085, with the option to extend for a further three years under one or more extensions.
No information on the number of other bidders - would have expected at least Arriva, First and Central Connect to have submitted tenders

The decision to award the contract was made on 2nd July. Presumably legal agreements and so on still to be signed before it's completely confirmed.

Wow so Stephensons, not who I would've put my money on. If it does go to them I wonder two things:
1. Will Arriva pull out of Colchester again.
2. Will Central Connect try and launch a commercial P&R service here too ;)

Well, that is a surprise. I know #2 is very tongue in cheek. However, #1 is a very real possibility - it's been rumoured to be underpinning much of the Colchester operation. In any case, losing 4 out of a PVR of c.22/23 is a big chunk and the fleet is as bargain basement as possible.

Interesting regarding the Colchester Park & Ride contract reward - Stephensons don’t currently operate in Colchester… but if they could also get their hands on Arriva’s garage plus a couple of city services (big if) it would be a natural bolt on to their business.

Arriva are at a turning point also. They’re becoming more proactive in Southend - however, with losing this contract it could be used as a good excuse (to blame) for leaving Colchester for good. Unless they try for new business there? First haven’t really gained much from the competition either; and the 3 didn’t last long at all.

Bar the Park & Ride MMC’s and VDL Pulsar(s) the rest of the fleet would go for scrap. It’s not like the E200’s can soldier on forever anyway. Presumably if they do stay in Colchester then a selection of Southends Versas will move across to update the fleet.

I'd expect they'll run it from Maldon depot? I'm not certain that they'd want to buy Arriva's Colchester operation and embark in competition with First.

I assume you mean the DB300s rather than SB200 Pulsars; the Pulsars there are 17 years old now.

Although Stephensons don't run any Colchester city services, they do currently operate the 174/5 to Fingringhoe. Their Frating depot is much closer (8 miles) to Colchester than the Maldon garage(16 miles).
I see Man of Kent has beaten me to it re the 174/5.

Stephensons have been much more active around Cambridge too and won some surprising tenders (61 in St Neots and 5A bar hill to St Ives that I could find). They have also taken one of their tendered routes (112) commercial. It will be interesting to see if that trend continues.

Certainly given TMS's continued expansion too the local authorities must be getting some nice competitive prices

A very well informed source tells me that Stephensons will run the Colchester P & R from the Frating depot. There will be three Enviro 200 in P & R livery and one in fleet livery.

Looks like the rumours regarding Central Connect taking over the Suffolk ONE contract is correct, no firm details yet but the transport page on the Suffolk ONE website looks to be in the process of updating, it says timetables coming soon, but this can be found in the FAQ’s

What is the One College Bus?
The One Bus is a private service contracted with Central Connect, running daily like a school bus.

I'm spending the week in Norfolk/Suffolk, and I was quite surprised to see that First in Great Yarmouth have got hold of a new fleet of 26-plate Gemini 3 electric buses. I've seen quite a few of these running on the 8 (Caister to JP Hospital) and even took a short ride on one today. I've also seen a few 22-plate Gemini 3s running around on the 1/1A (Martham to Lowestoft). Hopefully this is the start of good things for Great Yarmouth/Lowestoft, as the majority of their main fleet is looking and feeling rather tired now.

They received 10 Electroliners for the 8, which is interesting as they tended to allocate some of the older vehicles on there. However, as it's the major urban route through the town, it does make sense in terms of emissions in the area.

You're right to mention the fleet profile as it was getting a bit aged - I don't think they'd had new vehicles since 6 Streetlites in 2014/5 in Great Yarmouth. The odd thing is that with a number of the 63 plate e400 moving to Essex, you're now much more likely to get a 12 plate B9TL and they're fairly tired inside and not as comfortable as those 63 plates (or indeed, the 58 plate B9s).

The DfT have been giving more and more funding to operators / authorities who were successful in previous ZEBRA rounds, thus First Eastern Counties (in Norfolk) has had a few rounds of funding allowing expansion of the electric fleet beyond Norwich.
