I imagine this would be seen as a luxury for GN commuters, just for the reliability. Can the 10-cars run to King's Lynn, or is it 5 only? Did any 720s ever make it to King's Lynn or was that cut before they entered service?
720s made it to King's Lynn before the Greater Anglia cuts. Although I'm sure it was only ever a 5 coach set*

(*Not sure if it was a 10 from London splitting at Cambridge)

As for 720s for Great Northern being a luxury with the high density 3+2 seating compared with the 2+2 seating as found on the 387/379s

I'm pretty sure 10 won't fit in KL. The other issue is that a 5 car is probably too short for the Cambridge cruiser even off peak, and a 10 car won't fit in the suburban platforms at Kings Cross.
Theoretically it should be possible to only use the 720s on the Cambridge stoppers (and the Letchworth peak extras), with the Kings Lynn/Ely services all continuing to use 379s - the question would be whether 5-coach 720s (equivalent in length to 6 coaches of a 379/387, but with a high density layout) would provide sufficient capacity on these services, as it wouldn't be possible to use double sets because of the platform issue at Kings Cross that you mention.

Did you forget to finish this sentence? I'm not sure it makes sense.

The GN is fundamentally a railway for 8*20m=160m trains. Class 720s are 5*23m=115m trains, and just don't work in platforms 9 and 10 at Kings Cross, platforms 2 and 3 at Cambridge, at Kings Lynn, or at various intermediate stations, most notably Welwyn Garden City.

Did any 720s ever make it to King's Lynn or was that cut before they entered service?
The GA trains to passenger trains to Kings Lynn ended before class 720s started on Cambridge line trains, though I think a few class 720s got to Kings Lynn on test trains.

Solution looking for problem. They aren’t really suitable due to the length, 5 cars represents a capacity drop which will be a significant problem on GN, not to mention that the infrastructure is set up for 160m trains.

If something had to be done, send the units to LTS and release some 357s to GN, though again this will introduce a number of issues which would need to be resolved.

The real solution would be to improve the reliability of the 379s of course, so they stop pulling down the overheads

Sending them to ScotRail to replace some of the 156s, 318s and 320s might work as Scotrails replacement fleet requires 5x23m units. Also, it can allow the East Kilbride line to go to completely electric operation.

What they really need to do is boost more of the 5 car workings to 10 cars; even off peak on a weekday quite a few of the 5 car diagrams are extremely busy...

I definitely agree with this, but would this need any more units/diagrams than now, as I assume it would just be a case of keeping units out all day which are currently only used during the peaks?

Also agree with this. There seems to be some strange 10 v 5 car diagrams throughout the day which I've always assumed is down to lack of units to strengthen the service but then this thread suggests otherwise. Surely the better use is to put all the units to work before anyone thinks about sending them elsewhere?

Not everything that is currently 5 car doubles up in the peaks, surprisingly - so there is scope to improve the utilisation.

NB: Certain routes such as the Southminster directs cannot be anything other than 5 car, I think, due to length issues on the branch?

Perhaps they could go to Northern to replace the 350/2s that are about to go there to replace the 323s :E

Well.... In that case those 350/2s could instead go to a new Stanstead Express service thus freeing up 745s for Liverpool Street to Norwich :E.
Or those 350/2s could just as well go to Great Northern and the 379s could go to Stanstead Express :E:E:E.
So many solutions....... So little um.

Southminster trains can run 10 car, such as 1J07 this morning (RTT link)

In fact the Anglia TPR indicates that even 12 car trains would be permitted, obviously a leftover from the 321s

If 20 units are spare , send them to EMR to replace the 360's ( make then 2+2 seating throughout).
I'll probably make quite a lot of people unhappy with this suggestion, but given the issues raised about 720s being used on Great Northern (platforming at Kings Cross) sending the spare 720s to EMR as you suggest, and the 360s to Great Northern would seem to fit quite well.

Even without their length they are also 100mph max unless modified whereas the 360s can sprint along at 110.

This might be unpopular, but the only place I could personally see surplus 720s transferring to is c2c, to complement their existing fleet.

If the only outcome is 357s going for scrap as a result, I'm not sure it really makes much sense though, particularly if it results in single 720s replacing a pair of 357s.

I was thinking of complementing the existing fleet, rather than replacing the 357s, to allow for lengthening and service enhancements.

Is there any reason the 720s couldn't be uprated to 110mph?

How much spare capacity exists on the c2c network for stabling and operation of more stock? I note that the 302 fleet once stood at 112 4-car units, but not all operated on the c2c routes.

There are 74 4-car 357s plus 12 5-car 720s currently in operation, which is broadly equivalent to 92 4-car units. What else is there room for?

Probably not but it’s going to cost. Why bother when you’ve got a perfectly good fleet that already does the job and has another 15-20 years in service ahead of it? Not only that but it’s now going through an extensive refurbishment.

Extensive refurbishment? New seating I hope. If they were easy to change to 110mph then it would be more attractive to move them if they are truly not needed. The trouble now is creating more microfleets.

The 360s are going through extensive refurbishment. And really good it looks too. Why would you want to do the same again with the. 720s?

Oh I thought you meant the 720s were having an extensive refurbishment! I was shocked as they've barely been in service. It's all hypothetical so it doesn't need to make perfect sense.

Haha no not at all. They had a few pointless seats removed to improve passenger flow. Only refurb I can see them having in the medium to long term is to convert a sub fleet of them to airport style to release 745s from Stansted and all WAML duties.

Those spare should be used as refurb floats for the fleet. The 720s have terrible seats and a terrible layout and it all needs redoing.
