EMR has apparently arranged ticket acceptance with LNER, Lumo and Hull Trains out of Kings Cross tonight. The website suggests otherwise, but their Customer Service centre has just told me that there is acceptance in place "but we are not publicising it".

What a shambles of a company.

1W63 16:55 from Cardiff to Manchester Piccadilly has just been cancelled at Newport due to an air conditioning failure (showing up as M8 on RTT too). This was a 5 car mk4 set, the next train on that route is an hour later and is diagrammed for a 2 car 197. This is going to be dangerously overcrowded fun...

Not sure what's going on at Ashby Junction just north of Nuneaton, but the up TV fast has been blocked for over an hour, and the second of two trains are returning north to Arnington Junction to move over to the up TV slow. Glasgow > Euston is the second one, that originally got diverted down the TV route instead of its booked route via. Birmingham, presumably because it was already 90 mins late at Stafford. Can't imagine it's a lot of fun being on there at the moment.

This approach often makes sense when "unadvertised" ticket acceptance is in place and customers are informed at stations. Unfortunately it often becomes a case of it being in place and neither station staff nor the public are informed, which in a way is worse than doing nothing.

If social media support know about it and consistently advise about it to customers who ask by private messages, at least this partially solves the issue. I've known that not happening though, or worse, the tweets say no but the private messages contradict this and say yes. That doesn't appear to be happening in this case though.

Especially when it will likely be carrying passengers from the cancelled 1M10 (09;36 from Glasgow).

Last time I was on a MK4 set the air conditioning failed in one of the coaches, it seems to be a common issue.

ETA: on the move nearly 45 minutes after scheduled departure time. The last they could have done is handed out bottled water, let alone arrange acceptance on buses or trams. Utter, utter disasterclass.
I was on a TGV a few months ago which encountered 'vandalism' en route and presumably was no longer safe for use on the high speed lines. Thankfully we had stopped right before the junction off onto the high speed line and to Marseille St Charles terminus, and thankfully there is a depot right there, so we diverted into the station for the leading unit to be replaced. Water was handed out about 10 minutes after detraining and the whole thing only delayed us by just under 2 hours despite the heat (it is usually 25-30°C here in the summer). I was actually very impressed by SNCF's response here, they're not exactly known for amazing disruption handling. Yes, I appreciate the proximity of the depot helped but my point here is, stuff like giving out water is the bare minimum.

Though I will say, the reliability of the local services in this region is atrocious - it seems that despite heat being a regular thing, the units do not cope. In the UK I would argue we have a different, larger problem with the temperature and rail conditions being so varied (instead of just warm or hot like my South France example) - it's not like our railway is particularly reliable in the autumn & colder weather either...

Oh crivens, didn't realise that! o_O
A lucky escape for me as I was at Wigan at 12;40 and when I saw the delays (and the it was a 9 coach) jumped on a Liverpool bound service for a London train from Liverpool.

As for the track issues, I guess heat related signalling issues on the Up Fast line, similar to between Crewe & Stafford.

I've been on 2 x 700s (one 12 car, one 8 car) that have been churning out warm or hot air this week. Combined with a massive chunk of the Bedford - Three Bridges & Brighton - Cambridges being canned because of the pantograph issues you can imagine what an 8 car roasting 700 on the BML felt like!

Lots of 700s running on one pantograph (and therefore half power) due to the bent pantograph issues, the aircon is switched off in the half unit without the pan up. I just had it now.

I'm guessing they're keeping units running on one pantograph on stopping services, or at least the shorter services that are running. Peterborough to Horsham seems to have run well so far today, with no cancellations and only a few trains encountering any real delay. This despite the fact that it was listed on Thameslink's website that this route would have a reduced service.

Your post also confirms to me that I wasn't imagining things when I saw a 700 running on a single pantograph at Arlesey a few years ago.

What do you mean by 'bent pantograph issues'?

What is causing it? And if it is causing issues why is it not affecting the one pantograph that the units are having to use?

It sounded like it was affecting pantographs at different rates to me. So some units are stood down / on an AC restriction?

Thought that the other day they usual have two pans up when i was waiting for one at St Neots and had my suspicions aircon wouldn't be working in back half with no pan but it was! However, it seemed to be cycling on and off more which is maybe how they avoid overloading the auxiliary winding on the transformer thats only powered. Also explains why it lost a few minutes on the run down to Finsbury Pk but it wasn't exactly dawdling.

Is there nothing to hold EMR to account here? All other train operators are running normally but EMR have just blanket cancelled all trains west of Sheffield all weekend and the robin hood line nothing has been running

I understood the restrictions during the last heatwave and thought LNER for example did a brilliant job of cancelling half the Leeds services to keep everything running but the temperatures are lower now, and EMR just seem to have gone mad with using it to just stop everything while others carry on

One of the few disadvantages of the very good combination of London - Birmingham - Scotland is if there are severe delays north of Stafford, the train just gets sent Trent Valley and skips Birmingham entirely, the same can be said if very late leaving Euston.

TfW have cancelled all trains to Aberystwyth tomorrow, a bit of an overreaction?

https://tfw.wales/ways-to-travel/ra...0-lIOR49f9BFUDrnrPyIyWHtJxvRhrpoaAntLEALw_wcB
Forecast is 29 at Aberwysth and 30 at Machynlleth, which the 158's should be able to cope with but upon reading the full update it refers to air conditioning needing attention as the cause.

Never fear, you can use a local bus service instead the majority of the fleet looking non air conditioned but I'm not from that area, so maybe not. At least if they get stuck they can open the door easily and decamp unlike a train.

TfW also got Newport-Ebbw Vale suspended today for faulty air con, so even the newer 196s aren't bullet proof!

To put it simply, EMR's fleet is knackered and the heat just exacerbates this. The Class 158s and 170s do not like the heat - particularly so on any hilly routes where they overheat and engines start failing.

This live PPM chart for EMR may interest you.

Railway track. Can't figure out what direction that's in from the vidoes on Twitter.
Looks like SE are allowing use of HS1 at no extra cost which is a nice gesture
Not good. Basically knocks out everything up the GEML.

I've attached a video from Twitter, showing a stationary GA 720 train with flames behind it.

Update from London Fire Brigade on X, its shrubbery on fire
Firefighters are currently in attendance at a fire involving shrubbery near the railway line at #Stratford train station.

The station has been temporarily closed.

And Elizabeth Line is pretty much finished for the rest of the day. Abbey Wood can't handle all the trains to/from Shenfield before you start to consider complications arising from crew changes

Well, at least it will get rid of some of the Buddleia that Railtrack and Network Rail have allowed to grow unrestrained for the last twenty five years! ;)

I genuinely read that as “Problem with the train mate (“M8”)” the first time :D

I isn’t a huge surprise that turn of the 90s MK4s have aircon which doesn’t cope terribly well, it’s pretty much standard on stock of that era. As much as I’d favour a 225 over a Hitachi effort every day of the week, being sealed inside one with no ventilation on a day such as today would likely make even me give that choice some extra thought!
