My wife and I shall be travelling to Glasgow on Sunday 27th September from Newcastle and would normally travel there via Edinburgh on LNER and Scotrail.

I read somewhere that LNER has routine maintenance every year (in September) on the ECML, so trains go via Carlisle. What date is this please, or will it be announced later on.

I wouldn't mind trying out the Avanti service to Glasgow, hence my request as we could change at Carlisle, or even somewhere else on the WCML

I know there is a NorthernRail service from Newcastle to Carlisle, but we just fancy LNER as we like to travel in 1st.

Importantly, it isn’t September 27th. Possibly! See posts below.

With appropriate tickets there’s no reason for not going to Glasgow via Carlisle.

A quick look on Realtime Trains shows LNER going through Carlisle on 19th, 20th and 26th September. Randomly one solitary train showing on the 27th so presumably that's not been confirmed yet.

Edit: Nationalrail Booking Horizons show that LNER are only taking bookings at weekends until 6th September, so hopefully any diversions happening in September will be confirmed over the next few weeks.

@Willie Bee. Practical problem might be in finding a suitable 1st class fare for travel between Newcastle and Carlisle and then onwards to/from Glasgow Central. Booked train only 1st class advances for travel on LNER will likely be available, but use of these would probably then preclude using Avanti. The fully flexible Anytime 1st Singles (one required each way) look to be eye-wateringly expensive, even after applying railcard discount.

There is expected to be engineering work that weekend between Newcastle and Edinburgh, as well as the weekend before (19/20th Sept) and after (3/4th Oct).

OP here .. thank you for all the replies.

I'm not really sure what I was thinking .. if there is no ECML travel that day, booking could be a real problem .. luckily I booked the hotel on a flexible rate, so if we can't get to Glasgow I can cancel.

It's 14 weeks today, so hopefully in a couple of weeks (or soon after) I'll see what trains are available

I see for the week before my trip tickets are now available

A day trip to Carlisle, from Newcastle on LNER with a railcard could be less than £15 .. maybe worth a trip. Not all tickets on the image below are with LNER .. some are with NorthernRail

£14.35 is just the Standard Off Peak Day Return with railcard discount. Not First Class.

On the Forum's site, first class is showing as being unavailable

Even on the LNER site, it was the same .. no first class

By the way.. it's £21.60 for the return without a railcard .. about £7 / hour on an Azuma .. not bad at all and that line to Carlisle is very scenic

From memory there aren't any first class fares priced for Newcastle to Carlisle so you won't be able to buy them (from anywhere). Weekend First would be available I believe onboard but I think would be £39 as LNER have set the starting price incredibly high.

I've just managed to book, LNER from Newcastle to Edinburgh via Carlisle with LNER on Sunday 27th Sept.

As my wife and I are actually travelling to Glasgow, we could have changed trains at Carlisle and taken TPE but my wife preferred the LNER option all the way to Edinburgh.

We like to travel in first, which wouldn't have been available on the NCL to CAR section of the journey, as mentioned by 'Mcr Warrior' and 'ainsworth74'

In all, for two seniors with railcards it was about £75, NCL > EDB > GLQ which isn't too bad at all.

Does anyone know why it's the fast that are being diverted via Carlisle rather than the semi-fast?
It's quite annoying having to change at Newcastle when I'm fairly certain those from the North East didn't used to!

Brfares.com doesn't list any first class fares from Durham or Darlington to Carlisle either, with anytime first class fares from Northallerton being £60.10 each way without a railcard (Northallerton to Newcastle anytime day singles in first being £42.80 any permitted or £33.90 LNER-only).
