Tickets to Maidenhead are not issued to Maidenhead Station, they just print 'Maidenhead.'

I have travelled regularly from St. Neots regularly in the last seven years, and every single ticket is made out to "St. Neots" not "St. Neots Station"

I can answer this one guys, and guess who's responsible for it?

The TOCs? ATOC? Network Rail?

Nope - TheTrainline!

When they developed their online/call centre booking system (called TraCS).

Where there was places with multiple stations/bus links and if this coincided with the fact the main station was the name of the town (e.g. Bedford, Reading, St Neots) they added 'Station'. I remember the drop-down menus from it came into being, for example, under Bedford they had:

Bedford (either)
Bedford St Johns
Bedford Station

Initially they didn't differentiate the station groups, thus giving the appearance of several new groups. In later builds the official station groups were added.

So in short, ~ Station appears where the Trainline do the relevant website.

Hope this helps ;)

Hmmmm, makes sense, but I have booked many tickets through The Trainline to St. Neots, and It's also been "St. Neots" not "St. Neots" Station

There's Central Station on the T+W metro, assume that is to do with the mainline station rather than the metro station.

Do the platform signs read 'Tring' or 'Tring Station'?

Tring, like everywhere else

If it said 'Tring station' on the nameboards, that'd mean the station was called Tring Station Station :P

Micheldever is in the village of Micheldever Station and I believe Widdrington is another example of this.

The line for some reason didn't go through Micheldever but a couple of miles outside, when the station was built a small community grew up around it and so the area was called Micheldever Station, I belive.

Where this happens, it's a symptom of ambitious station naming by the original builders of a line. For instance, Godstone station is nowhere near Godstone, but the settlement of South Godstone has now sprung up around the station. Although it doesn't have "Station" in the name, you get the idea.

I was wondering if Knockholt would be a good example of a settlement with "Station", but it turns out it isn't. :( I did unearth Chelsfield though, where the Station settlement is quite distinct from the original settlement from which the station name was taken. There is no point in renaming Chelsfield station as Chelsfield Station station however, as this would mildly confuse things.

I hope I've interpreted this thread correctly... :p

However, Micheldever station opened as Andover Road... (this was before the Salisbury line was built).

True, I assume the settlement didn't really take off until the Salisbury line was built - or I could just be plain wrong?
