It also has a minor livery modification - the roof ends up to the air con modules have been painted SWR grey. Presumably a lesson learned from both the SWR and NSE liveries.

But retaining the lighter colour over the passenger saloon which is a good idea as it reduces heat gain in the sun (particularly with 158 aircon!).

Does anybody happen to know if A, upgrades to the Alternators are part of this to finally allow plug sockets at most seats and B, if anything is being done to the First Class section? There have been long held rumours that they too were to be reduced down (downgraded) to 2+2 like the 444s.

No the alternators are not being upgraded, standard class will be getting USB sockets only, don't know if USB-A or USB-C though. Believe that 2+1 is staying in first too.

Looking at the photos that have been shared internally, First Class looks to be relatively unchanged apart from a replacement of the seat covers from the old SWT blue to the same blue leather that is used on the Desiros (and possibly also new tables).

159s are not the most comfortable for everyone. Those of us with long legs find the table seats far too cramped. The raked seat backs with thick upholstery have combined to reduce legroom to a minimum throughout the units. I actually avoid the 159s now, if I can.

My dad dislikes the inability to work properly on his laptop when using the pull down trays due to the excessive vibrations. I haven't experienced this myself as I have always defaulted to table seats on 158/159s.

Any ideas when 159 103 will be released into the wild? It seems to have been at the depot for a long time now. Is it usual for recently refurbished units to be stabled for long periods of time?

On a livery issue, when the GBR livery was launched in Brighton, Ms Alexander said that as trains went through a major works programme they would be put into the new GBR livery, but I see 159103 has been done in the SWR livery. Can anyone explain why or was it simply to far gone in the process to be stopped.

Yeah, it was too far into the process. The first few (can't remember exactly how many) refurbed SWR Diesels will come out in SWR livery, because they're too far gone or whatever, but then the rest will be GBR SW.

With no real time knowledge of that to which you refer (old hand experience only) I suspect any repaint/re livery will be attended to at Bournemouth paint shop the next time said unit is due through there for exam purposes?

It may be a couple of weeks yet. There are inspections and adjustments required at the depot to allow it to be signed off ready for service. These checks are more in depth than those that allow the unit to return ECS to Salisbury.

As far as I'm aware, 159101 was the only unit at Bournemouth, unless something else was there? If it is 101 returning, surely it wouldn't have been refurbished that quickly?

I doubt very much that 159102 has been at Bournemouth for repaint - it was written off in the Salisbury crash.

It would be a good idea for someone to create a list of all the 158s/159s so that when updates are provided on certain units, it would be reflected in the list, that way people could check which units are in or out of service etc

159003 is out of the main depot and in the westmost siding, hopefully a sign that things are moving along with it
