First route to use the new bridge. I thought due to the waiting times for the bridge to lift, operators were not interested in any routes over the bridge.

I think it's more that the bridge opens and closes at very irregular times so a proper timetable is well nigh impossible.

I think it's more that the bridge opens and closes at very irregular times so a proper timetable is well nigh impossible.

If they get caught with an unexpected closure the alternative is to use the tunnel or Erskine Bridge.
Not to sit and wait.
Happens quite regularly in Europe and it's not a real problem if planned for the Day ahead.

Good intentions apart - what happens when the ship doesn’t appear at the pre-arranged/agreed opening time? Say ‘Sorry, you’ve missed your slot’? Anything could happen from a planned itinerary (just ask PS Waverley!) I’m sure as an active waterway, its traffic has a right of passage that the Council (who control the bridge swing) cannot override. Telepathy might be useful, but Sod’s Law will always surface.

It closes at least 4 times a day, sometimes for 20 mins when presumably the staff have their break.

A lot of the ships that navigate the Clyde are dictated by the tidal flow, especially the bulk carriers. The bridge authority will have plenty of notice if a ship is behind schedule and will work with that. Marine tracker gives you a pretty accurate up to the moment ship positions and ETA's. The ships are not like buses, they don't just turn up. For most of them tugs are needed to get them up river. It's a well planned operation getting any ship of size into a harbour.

They will have plenty of notice but due to tidal constraints (the times of high and low tides varies on a daily basis) you can't open the bridge to a set timetable. The moon is responsible if you want to apportion any blame.

For ‘bridge authority’ read Renfrewshire Council - it’s their staff. True, it’s not as busy as it once was but with KGV providing a destination and departure point such traffic needs to be managed and unlike many other ports there‘s no ability to allow ships to pass each other until Tail o’ the Bank.

Whether passengers like it or not, river traffic will always take priority until navigation rights are extinguished and I don’t see that happening. The Renfrew and Erskine chain ferries worked because their timetable allowed flexibility (and they could nip behind any approaching vessel as soon as it passed). That’s not easily done with two sides of a swinging bridge.

Guess the way they look at it is if they spend and repower and get another 10 years out of them, it will be cheaper than buying new. By then they could afford to buy new.

It it were me I would just buy new or lease new. The current repowers are not really that much older. Hence the personal registrations.

I’m inlined to think the same. I don’t imagine buses that old will be repowered and fully refurbished inside. That version of the E400 isn’t even produced anymore.

This is First we’re talking about and there will be resistance from the powers that be with regards to replacing singles with doubles.

I think the idea of the 11/61 plate E400s getting repowered is highly unlikely.

What do you do with the 6? Arguably it struggles with the lower frequency and single deckers- upping the frequency is a lot more resource and cost. Deckers are simple but nothing made to fit...
