Will be 165102 on 5V85

This is interesting. Turbo transfers to/from Wolverton have always run with 5Qxx headcodes, a 5Vxx headcode to Exeter usually means a 150 (eg 150234) so it will be interesting to see what it is, if it runs.

Had actually forgotten about the 150s also at Wolverton. Is very possible it will be a 150 but 165102 also happens to be due out soon, although I suppose that might end up returning to SPM instead?

I always felt that the Coradias (175 +180) and Junipers (original 458/0, 460, 334) if they had been built well could have been some really nice units. I have ridding on the original 458 and despite everything, they were really smooth comfy units for us passengers. Its just you knew some aspects just was not built as well as some other trains.

I hope someone can get a picture of it, as I will not see it on Coastcams. Odd restricted 40mph? Wrong road working at Chippenham.
It's a VVR which is why it's showing as 40mph max, but it wont actually be limited to that. RTT always has this issue with VST or VVR workings.

I thought there must be something like that as it kept pace with a voyager from Bristol; only a few signal blocks behind.

So GWR now have 5 x 2 car and 6 x 3 car via Wolverton

Just 28 of the 68 vehicles or 41% (other 2 vehicles are for spares) as we approach the midpoint of 2026.

Last year was stated all will be in service by end 2026, so really need to ramp up the repair, overhaul and deliveries if going to get other 59% through works and available within next 6 months. Otherwise this will drag on into 2027 (or 2028)

Going to Wolverton hasn't made them more reliable 002/007/009 have all worked passenger. 002 seems one of the most reliable. Only 005 is left at Ely. 008 who knows? Only a handful of three cars are used; most are still at Wolverton.
Except for the extra train at Newquay and old HST workings they don't seem to be trusted elsewhere to relieve the pressure on existing stocks.

16 of 26 sets are now with GWR, with further deliveries from Wolverton imminent during July and August. The end of the year is achievable, notwithstanding trains going back for their turn in the refurbishment programme.

Relatively poor day today but not to be a surprise in this heat. Most fleets are struggling at GWR and you can see it through the cancellation list!

175111 keeps on rolling though, currently late on 2E28 due to some sort of line issue earlier as far as I could tell between Newton Abbot and Totnes.
Hopefully once the weather cools the units will relax a bit.

The "relatively poor day today" is that for the 175s or GWRs fleet overall ?

What is the scope of the refurbishment programme, has it just been internal or something more ?

Both in their own regards.

Most if not all of GWR's fleets were struggling today in the heat but the 175s especially with only 1 unit surviving the whole day of 5 or 6.

Thanks.

Historically 175s have struggled with heat dissipation during warmer temperatures in regards to engines, hydro oils and battery chargers if enhanced summer procedures were not followed.

I believe it's a matter of learning.

Most rolling stock newly introduced to TOCs have rough starts as the train crew and maintenance crew need time to learn what can go wrong and how to resolve them and find ways to iron the issues out.
Sure, they may not be perfect now but I'm sure given enough time GWR will get their grips on the units and force them to behave just like their golden days in Wales, before everything went downhill.
These are not new trains so all of the foibles should have been ironed out a long time ago.

A lot of foibles get 'ironed out' by simply knowing "if x happens, do y" (or "to prevent x happening, do z"), whether that's resetting a breaker, checking a particular sensor or kicking the stuck mechanism in exactly the right place...

All of that knowledge is in people's heads, and very few staff have transferred from TfW with the units.

Even if more than a fraction of it was documented (which organizations are very bad at doing for informally-gathered information), and that documentation is available to GWR rather than being buried in some TfW/CAF system at Chester, people don't instantly memorize the entire manual.

You go from a 1-minute "I'll just sort that" to a 10-minute "let me look that up in the book", some trial-and-error or a long wait for a fitter.

The two trains that have been at Laira for 18 months might as well been left at Ely for all the attention GWR seems to have paid them.

How involved are Alstom in these units nowadays? It feels as if GWR are being left to figure out how to make these units work by themselves and hence why they're just refusing to work.

Having leased these vehicles and them currently not being fit for purpose in many cases, is it a case of buyer beware or are there clauses within the contract to mitigate these matters?

Very, Alstom signed an 8 year contract worth £75m to provide support at Laira

I don't know how many support staff you get for roughly £180,000 per week, although some of the money covers providing spare parts
21 August 2025 – Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has signed a Technical Support and Spares Supply Agreement (TSSSA) with Great Western Railway (GWR) to assist the introduction of 26 Class 175 trains into service across the South West England.

Under the eight-year agreement, valued at approximately £75 million, Alstom will deliver ongoing maintenance support from GWR’s Laira depot in Plymouth. The contract supports more than 15 roles, including engineers, material planners and administrators, as well as many more in Alstom’s wider supply chain.

Didn't First paint about 8 166s (or was it 165s) just before GWR took over, they then stayed in purple to about 2-3 years ago. It was something like 8 or 9 years before they got painted green.
Well, GWR didn’t “take over” - they’re still First Great Western in all but name - so it was just a brand relaunch. Units that had reached their painting date would still have to be painted - so purple to be.
There was something odd going on around the time the GWR brand came in, but I can't remember the full details. A small number of units (including at least one 150 and a small number of 166s or 165s I think) were repainted in plain FirstGW blue with pink doors (as per the 'dynamic lines' HST livery but without the vinyls) and a class 153 (nicknamed 'Casper') was painted white, before authorisation was obtained to paint the rest of the 153 fleet in the new GWR green. Only one of the 180s got (partial) GWR livery as well I think - and even that was only one end of the unit (the other end remained in FirstGW Dynamic Lines).

Established HSS Drivers (at Plymouth) sign 150/153, HST’s (2+8), Castles (2+4), Voyagers, 800/802, Class 47/57, Class 08.
I'd bet that HSTs, Castles and Class 47s are off their cards now, given the haste with which GWR was culling HST knowledge during the rundown.
Isn't the Night Riviera still hauled by class 57s? Or is that not worked by Plymouth crews at all? Also, I'm surprised to see that there are TOC drivers who work both Voyagers and 800s/802s, since GWR don't have Voyagers in their and XC don't have 80x - meaning that the same driver must be working for multiple TOCs. Is GBR already starting to brake down the franchise silos that result in things like ECS moves between Swansea and Cardiff because TfW don't have a traincrew depot in Swansea, even before GWR is nationalised?

wonder why TFW got rid of them.
Inability to work in multiple with anything else and a headline-grabbing "we're going to replace the entire train fleet" bid from KeolisAmey (who were the winning bidder for the TfW operating contract, before COVID caused early termination), presumably. If I recall correctly the 175s were the most-reliable trains in Arriva Train Wales' fleet in 2018, when TfW took over. It went downhill sometime after that.

Was this after GWR abandoned the 769s in December 2022? TFW ran down the 175s from February 2023 with 175002 which went into storage before arriving at Laira November 2024 and is often being used at Newquay. It did not go through Wolverton.
ATW's franchise ended in October 2018 and I understand the new TfW fleet had already been ordered by June 2019, so the CAF takeover of Chester depot was already contractually committed by then.

Wasn't the 'Castle HST' project supposed to deliver life-extension for the mark 3s through to the 2030s? It can't have been a cheap job to fit the mark 3s with power doors, only for the DfT/Treasury to lose faith in the project and drop them from both XC and GWR after less than 6 years beyond the 2020 PRM deadline that led to the power doors?

Plymouth drivers drive 57s to and from Penzance with the sleepers. GWR drivers bring Voyagers on and off Laira as XC AFAIK don’t sign LA.

The units were the most reliable in the fleet until CAF took over the maintenance when the 197 transition began. The unit reliability fell off a cliff after that. If GWR had them in the state and maintenance quality of the units back at their best they would actually be perfect for the region. As to whether that level of reliablity will be achievable is unforseeable currently but it's not starting off well.

Unless its changed and i missed it , Exeter drivers do the NR although PZ and LA are 57 trained with LA being done last year.
Exeter HSS + West cover between Plymouth-Padd both ways. Plymouth do Plymouth-Penzance both ways. PZ had a spell covering Truro to PZ but they now only ferry between station and depot. Pad drivers ferry between Reading and Paddington but have covered vacancies to and from Exeter.
Anyway back to the wonderful (?) 175s…
