If all is normal, one train following another gets its information from the signalling, lights on sticks here or in cab displays on other systems. The state of the 360 cab leads me to sadly suspect who. Prayes to all involved. Real bad incident. Does anyone know the speed of those points from the US to UF?The BBC have just very sadly confirmed a fatality
EU regulation (yes they are still in effect) less than 200kph (195kph = 118mph, generally designated 110mph in the UK) are normal trains, 200kph (124mph) and above are high speed trains with enhanced safely such as bigger crumple zones.AIUI, given that the 360s run at max 110mph, they don’t need the pointy noses.
Nevertheless, as others have said, a huge tragedy and thoughts with all those affected.

Crumple zones working as intended. They are designed to squidge up at key points in the vehicle that don't have passengers in, to absorb the impact and reduce the deceleration force experienced by the rest of the train (and passengers).That 360 looks like hell. The impact from that must have been massive to do that much damage to the ends of the coaches.
There are circumstances where that might be an advantage. One of the biggest risk factors in a collision is standing passengers being sent flying and then hitting something hard. If you can only move a couple of inches before bumping into someone then that reduces the risk of a hard impact – you might get more people with bumps and bruises but fewer with serious injuries. On the other hand, the more overcrowded the train is, the longer it is going to take to evacuate everyone and triage any injuries, so on balance any theoretical reduction in risk is probably offset by other factors.My biggest fear is about CrossCountry trains. A huge accident waiting to happen if a packed voyager crashed. I’ve been on ones where you can’t even raise your arms.
Track circuit operating clips (emergency protection) is my guess.
