Also, does anyone issue CCST on board/at the gateline still? I think I heard that Southern/WMT are switching over now? If no one does anymore, I think that is the end of RSP 9299 stock (since as far as I know it is only used for onboard/portable issuing).

It does provide evidence for the service you have used but on multiple day rangers I have had on PRT they still reject the claim even when the delay repay appeal is used and have had to contact customer services.
Also, (while I appreciate it will be a very unusual case that train operators will almost certainly not have, understandably, accounted for) I had issues on a West Midlands Day ranger once where I boarded a service at Birmingham New Street and had tickets checked (and scanned) before departure but I got off and boarded a different service on the adjacent platform (the final unit I needed to complete a class of train). This service was then delayed but with no ticket checks and delay repay was rejected, I eventually got delay repay but it took several months.

It gives the TOC some data points to interpret. Or misinterpret, as the case may very well be.
It is an issue for long-validity multi-modal tickets where the bus driver needs to see all the printed details as the ticket machines can’t read railway codes.

It is most definitely still a problem- or at least it was three weeks ago. Haven’t tested it since as I’m now on CCST.
|Then in that situation you would need to remove it. To be blunt, it's a bit of a 1st world problem.
Went there a few days ago to collect tickets and they gave me PRT at the manned ticket office , although the ticket machines near the Thameslink entrance still dispense CCST.
The ticket office at Marylebone has been PRT since at least September 2025 too.
Of course it is (although having to do it four times a day in the rain might well render the ticket pulp long before its validity expires)- but one that would be entirely unnecessary if the railway stuck to the size of ticket that it has used for the last 40 years. And, before anyone asks, the ticket concerned is only available as a paper ticket (for the same reason, I assume)
Euston box office printed my highland rover to CCST only a few months ago.

What's the process if someone wants to buy a travelcard now - of course, with no working ticket facilities at start of journey?
Just "buy it at New Street excess window" and lose out on the small commission (do WMT guards get commission?)

Not sure if Worldline on-board kit can do it yet but TTK lets you sell such tickets as a Ticket on Departure and produces a one-shot gate pass to use at the interchange station so you can collect the ticket from a TVM or Ticket Office.
Some PRT TOCs allow guards to fulfil to TOD (pickup from machine/window). The guard takes payment and issues a receipt that allows travel to the London terminal/interchange station (the receipt has an Aztec for the gates as well as a TOD ref for picking up CCST when changing). Don’t know about WMT though.

Sadly not anymore, just tried it and got the flimsiest bog roll ticket I recall ever getting.
These things feel such poor quality they're an embarassment to the railway. At least the tickets dispensed from the TVM are printed on reasonably decent quality paper.
Ask for a platform ticket with whatever you are buying. It should force both to print as CCST. 10p is a small price to pay for a ticket that lasts.

Magellan (formerly Worldline) kit, which is what GA are replacing Fujitsu STAR with, supports mixed CCST and PRT fulfilment in the same basket. It's also theoretically possible to print Platform Tickets to PRT anyway.

Platform tickets are fulfillable to PRT. By all means pay an extra 10p if you’d like though.
It may be possible but it certainly doesn't fulfill to PRT at my station.

Curiosity, which TIS do you use?
Same one as at Ely, I'm not ticket office staff so I don't actually know but I certainly watched it print as CCST!

GWR, a few weeks ago, had a way to override that and issue CCST… you can always ask. Although quite a few people say they can’t issue something when they’re just not sure how.I was at Temple Meads recently and was given bog roll for a platform ticket. Difficult to complain for 10p though
I probably would do for an actual journey TBH.
Something I thought I would add to this thread, that doesn't seem to have been mentioned yet:
From a quick look at the UI, some TVMs on the Overground (NOT the TfL-style blue/silver ones) seem to be able to issue a small range of rangers/rovers (All-line 7/14 day, Kent and Thames rovers and the North Downs, Kennet and Thames branches rangers). It also let me pick an alternative start date almost 1 month in advance. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to actually purchase one when I looked through the UI (I was doing a ticket collection) but I don't think these machines use PRT, I've only ever seen CCST (with TfL roundels on them - as shown in the attached picture) come out of one of those machines.
I also found a new S&B machine at Romford station, which had an EL branded interface which was stylised like the gov.uk website. I'm aware they're also at some other EL stations (I don't think the core ones, though) and from a quick look around the UI, it seemed to be able to sell basically every ranger/rover, and it also let me change the start date to almost a month in advance as well. Once again, I didn't actually purchase a ranger from it sadly, however I plan to try it asap, and considering it's a TfL machine I imagine it'll probably just print as CCST. The ToD order I collected from it was printed as CCST, at least.
It would be interesting to see if anyone has actually bought a ranger/rover from any of those machines, as if they do print out as CCST (which I imagine they will do, but can't confirm 100%) it's certainly a good option, especially considering they let you pick dates in the future.
