On a separate note, is there a new 701 diagram next week in the STPs?

I am assuming (maybe wrongly) that a 450 main line diagram will go over to a 701, and we will see another cascade of 450s to the Windsors and the loss of another 458/4 diagram.

On a separate note, is there a new 701 diagram next week in the STPs?

I am assuming (maybe wrongly) that a 455 main line diagram will go over to a 701, and we will see another cascade of 455s to the windsors and the loss of another 458/4 diagram.
455s?

I don't think there is any new diagrams next week from what I can see.

That brings us to 53 in service, 4 in commissioning and 3 on training duties. My uneducated guess is the full fleet of 10 cars in traffic by the end of August.

Pretty sure 004 was the last to leave Farnhan about a week ago. All 60 are now in service, Wimbledon or Clapham.
Not quite in service but one more in service would make 90% of the 701/0s in service.

I also noticed yesterday how Clapham Junction Yard is in danger of having more 701/5s in it than 701/0s. This was about 19:00 and so regular passenger units would have been out and about, that would have included 701/0s. Time was (probably longer ago than I care to face up to) it was mainly 701/0s there in the evening !.

At a glance it looked like long time regulars 701528 (& 701529) were in their usual home nearest to platform 7 at Clapham Junction - I guess still doing the coupling training for 5cars !.

528 (& 529) did indeed do a quick uncoupling/coupling manoeuvre earlier in the afternoon!

For those interested 701003 is in the north shed and 701029 and 701004 are outside the south shed at Wimbledon. 701027 is at Clapham sidings

There are still a few 70110 car courses for outer depots, especially Guildford running. There will always be the need for trainee drivers to have 701 reaction training too, that's never going to go away.

As for the 5 car course there are a few rumours about that November is the current plan for passenger use. I'd expect a lull in proceedings whilst the t's are crossed and i's dotted on the training course with drivers getting trained after the summer holiday. Crew are always thin on the ground when the schools are off and the sun is out.

A percentage of diagrams with between the peaks down time were (in my day) just stabling, as opposed to maintenance, which allows for such initiatives to be planned on a STP basis, that said the suburban fleet(s) were more intensively used, so there were fewer such diagrams when compared to either 400 stock days or Desiro diagrams.

just wonder where the 701/5's will go? is it any new routes where no 10 cars operating? such as replacing the desiros on Guildford Farnham? or the ascot aldershot shuttle?

they will run in pairs predominantly, they needed the flexibility during engineering works to be used in the kingston bay and stations like clandon which cannot accomodate a 10 car if reversing.

so does it means certain routes use a single 5 coach only, if I didn't get wrong

Please could someone post a summary of progress (how many deployed, how reliable, compared to what they replaced, etc). Many Thanks.

As for reliability, you can get some indication from the figures in this post

Obviously the ones that have been in service longest have had more days in service, but there are some outliers which seem to have had fewer days' use than their entry into service would suggest was typical.

Likewise the Hounslow Loop service. 2 tph is not acceptable on any route in London.

Realistically, the 701s will be life-expired (and probably so will I) long before there is any chance of any Crossrail 2 services running.
The cheap build quality of the 701’s they will be life expired in about 10 years!!!

Travelled on 1C54 701.044 yesterday from Feltham to Waterloo, no working AC or even blowing fans along the whole train.
Once the rugby crowd boarded at Twickenham pfm.3 it became stifling!
A call for medical assistance was made at Vauxhall but thankfully this was short lived and were on the move fairly soon.

That’s exactly what people who worked on the 4SUBs said about the 455s when they replaced them!

That sounds like external smoke mode was operated and left in. Shuts down ventilation so not to fill the carriages with smoke filled air.

I do notice waiting on Platform 8 at Vauxhall that some of the toilets have a noticeable chemical loo smell from the outside of the train. A few of the trains the WiFi also doesn't seem to be working, but otherwise they seem to be settling in quite nicely in my experience
