Tickets: Odd/funny "from" and "to" locations

On lodging turns, once the shift is over, our crews get a taxi to the hotel. An infamous tale is of a crew member phoning the booking company for a taxi from Liverpool Street station, and waiting outside for it. Time passes, with no sign of the taxi. A quick ring back; "Where's this cab I ordered?" "OK, we'll chase it up". Few minutes pass, the agency phones back. "Driver says he's waiting outside" "No he's not, there's no one waiting here" "He says he's been outside Lime Street for 15 minutes!" "Well, I can't see hi...wait, LIME Street?!"

And I'm sure it caused no small number of confused tourists back when services ran from Stansted Airport to both of them! I expect people still get mixed up at Norwich nowadays too.

In good old APTIS days you could issue a ticket from breakfast to dinner via lunch.

I'm still mourning the passing of Three Cocks Junction and Cockermouth from the comedy station names railway map, leaving us with Littlehampton, Hampton Court, Hampton, Hampton Wick and Penistone as the main trousersnake inspired railheads.

Yes, I can think of a few times I've been on Liverpool Lime Street trains from Norwich and people have wanted London Liverpool St. Probably doesn't help that they leave within 3 mins of each other (Liverpool at 57, London on the hour). At least then people just have to change at Ely and can get a Kings Cross train. It's a valid route too. Doing it the other way around would be more of a problem, you'd have to get to either Stowmarket or Ipswich and then get a Peterborough train to connect with the next available Liverpool train at Ely. Don't know if that would be a valid route so you might get charged more.

They have changed most of the displays along the route, IIRC.

At one point, the displays at Ely read "Liverpool L St", which is just asking for trouble at a station where there are (admittedly few) Liverpool St trains.

I'm not sure, but I don't think all tickets to/from Moorgate are either "London Terminals" or "Zone 1 London" depending on whether or not Moorgate is a valid terminal for the journey (which it isn't for places in the South East like Margate).

On LUL - Queensbury - Kingsbury

Interestingly the name Queensbury was selected by a newspaper competition when the new station on the (then) Bakerloo Line opened there in the 30s. It's simply named that because the neighbouring area (and next stop north) is Kingsbury.

It goes to show what totally featureless areas of fields these were before Metroland arrived.
