Ever wanted to know what rover/rangers are valid from a particular station, or look at just one map and see coverage and overlap?

Claude (the AI service) created an interactive map for me: https://koyli.github.io/rail-rover/ - hope this is of some use to others! Any suggestions or corrections, do let me know.

I see that Claude may have a looser definition of Cheshire than the rest of us though! (And also has put the wrong Whitchurch in Hampshire.)


There are a few similar things, such as Millbrook (Beds) appearing in Southampton, and Bramley (Hants) showing in the Freedom of the NE Rovers.

Thanks - yes, there'll be some corrections to make - not all are Claude, sometimes it's actual Network Rail error!

It found Denby Dale to be in the Thames Rover - and according to https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/tickets-railcards-offers/promotions/thames-rover-7-day/ that is correct as Denby Dale (ie. West Yorks) is listed in the "Applicable Zone of Stations(s)" which is in the Validity section!

For Whitchurch - I see there are three such stations (that must be a record?)! Bramley - ah yep, two of those! I'll fix that

I stand corrected! Thought that Merseyrail/Merseytravel didn't allow the Lancashire Day Ranger, been a while since I double checked, just something I thought was in the rules and regs

It seems to be missing some, it has the Derbyshire Wayfarer but not the Manchester Wayfarer, in addition to missing all of the other Manchester ones (train, train+bus, train+tram, train+tram+bus), and no presence of either Merseytravel one.

Manchester's own tickets don't appear on https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ticket-types/promotions/?promotionType=ranger-rover.

I'll coax Claude to add an alternate source for that.

Can you provide the list that you know? The list I have is _everything_ on Network Rail plus a handful of known others so far provided by this forum.

It's pretty damning of the Network Rail website that there are missing ones like Manchester's, or Southern's. It's one thing for someone like me to add a nice or just different way to look at things - ie. my map - but I'd like for there to be a definitive government operated source of truth to start from!!

Network Rail own and operate the rail infrastructure, but don't have any say over fares and ticketing. National Rail is the public facing website for Rail Delivery Group, the body who work with train operating companies, overseeing the fares system we have in the UK.

It may be worth using official RDG fare data. It's available as open data, and from experience, whilst not perfect, it's miles more accurate than their public facing website.

That's right - typo on my part - I meant National Rail's website, which is what I used. _It_ ought to do a better job of maintaining the rovers and rangers data. Perhaps when GBR opens up a website, it will be better resourced - I hope it'll not just be the old site re-skinned.

I can definitely find the fare data - which will be automated easily enough. It will also make it easier to fill in the ones that I know nothing about.

I can't see a definitive valid stations data source - so that'll remain a bit iffy but hey.. needs must!

This is now done. More accurate prices (although at the moment I don't attempt to list all types of price, Claude is using adult only as the sticker price)

It also - in doing that - discovered and added the new Northern Explorer - that's a fantastic ticket! It still isn't listed on the national rail website - although it only launched last week.

The other change that happened last week was the creation of the Cumbria Travel Pass, and removal of Hadrians Wall Day Ranger, Settle & Carlisle Day Ranger, Cumbria Day Ranger, Cumbria Round Robin, Cumbria Coast Day Ranger, and Lakes Day Ranger (although the 1 day version of the new product uses the same codes as the Lakes Day Ranger did). Not sure how well the data has updated to reflect that.

Based on the one map I've seen, removes validity on Morecambe branch but adds it between Workington and Carlisle, and Penrith and Carlisle.
Yes price rises from £31.30 to £40 for an adult (with railcard discounts available).
