Carlisle to Euston/Kings Cross

Hi there, with the LNER diversions over the Tyne Valley and WCML being booked for the 19-20 and 25-27 of September I was looking at the timetable of trains to London. Between 07:40-07:46 there are a total of 3 trains all to London! 1M00 (Lumo) to Euston, 1E06 (LNER) to Kings Cross and 1M07 (AWC) to Euston. Which service is likely to be the most expensive and which is most likely to be the cheapest? Overall which service would be the best overall to get?

For undiscounted walk-up single fares in Standard class, think you're looking at £95.40 to travel with LNER from Carlisle to London Kings Cross via Newcastle, or £110.80 with Avanti from Carlisle to London Euston, or £94.00 with Lumo, also to London Euston. Probably have to wait until ~ 12 weeks before the date of travel.

Advances are generally released about 12 weeks or so out, though it can vary around Xmas etc

Anyone able to assist the OP with an answer to this? Have used Avanti pendolinos to/from Carlisle any number of times, they're fairly o.k.; however LNER services not that often and Lumo never.

I can't comment on Lumo but I'd put a negative vote on LNER, a Pendolino far surpasses it.
The Lumo sets have 2 different types of seat in different standard class carriages so there is an option between them.

The Avanti gets in at 11:12, the Lumo at 11:57 and, the LNER at 12:17, so I'd definitely consider the time as well given how much faster the Avanti is.

Comfort is subjective.

It depends on what you want from the journey.

If it’s route, then you need to decide whether you prefer the WCML over Shap or the ECML and Tyne Valley. Both have pros and cons, but the WCML probably has the more interesting view overall.

If it’s comfort, then you pays your money and takes your choice. I find both Pendolinos and Azumas uncomfortable, but my height means that I’ll go for the larger windows of the Azumas.

If it’s price, then as others have said, you’ll need to wait till tickets are released.

It's too early for those dates. However on 5th September, Lumo is only £25.90:



So Lumo is likely to be cheapest, but it's too early to be sure.

You can use the seat selector to choose the seat of your choice for any of those operators.

Travelling on an Azuma is literally a pain in the backside.

Travelling on a Pendo, if I'm not looking out of the window, the tilt makes me feel a bit sick.

I have only used Lumo a few times but, while they have a strict luggage policy, the luggage restrictions were not enforced with luggage placed (unsafely) throughout the train.


Its been a while since I have used Lumo though, so they may be more strict now?

I have just completed a return journey between York and Edinburgh with LNER. The First Class seating was comfortable, and the complimentary service overall was very good.

For relatively new trains, however, I found the ride occasionally quite rattly. At one point, two fellow passengers completely lost their drinks, which ended up spilling onto the floor.

I think the new chicken toastie is good; better than the previous ham & cheese toastie.

Us regulars know to ensure cups don't remain particularly full for long and to ensure that cups are never left to slide on the slippery tables!

which supports my feeling that the "new" ECML and WCML trains aren't a patch on Pendolinos for comfort and ride quality.
