It has been mentioned on multiple news sources that the Gatwick Express is being restored to 4tph from December, as is 4tph on the Hertford loop between Moorgate and Hertford North.

Interesting. I had assumed GatEx was on its’ way out. Will all 4tph run to Brighton??

Southeastern timetable update

In December, Southeastern will deliver one of the biggest improvements to Metro services in years – subject to final industry planning and approvals.

From Sunday 13th December, Southeastern will offer:

  • A ‘turn up and go’ minimum of 4 trains per hour across all Metro routes on Monday to Saturday (except Bromley North), with more frequent services on some lines
  • All day, half-hourly Greenwich and Sidcup line rounders Monday to Saturday – offering an all-day direct link from the Sidcup Line to Abbey Wood for the Elizabeth line
  • Two trains per hour all day, seven days per week, between Charing Cross and the Bexleyheath line, improving the current service level of one train per hour off-peak and Saturday
  • Orpington to Victoria services (via Herne Hill) increased from 2 to 4 tph on Saturdays
  • Cannon Street services from the Bexleyheath line are redirected to Charing Cross on Sundays in response to customer demand.
  • More trains on Sundays with the introduction of an hourly Charing Cross to Maidstone East service and 2 trains an hour on the Bromley North branch for the first time in many years.
  • An increase in services on the Sheerness branch, providing two trains per hour all day, seven days per week
Journey planners for these services will be updated in September.

Cannon Street is going to be even more a ghost station on Sundays with services from Bexleyheath diverted to Charing Cross.

There wouldn't be paths for that, and if there were, it would have been announced as a doubling of trains from Victoria to Brighton, rather than Gatwick.

GTR’s 100 day plan will focus on getting the basics right, to create a reliable service that delivers better on-board experience. The plan includes measures to:

Double Gatwick Express services: easier travel for holiday makers with double the number of Gatwick Express trains each hour between Gatwick Airport and London Victoria from December and more early morning services on Saturdays and Mondays from this summer. Additional Great Northern services will also commence in December.

How completely pointless, considering those extra trains will likely be carrying around fresh air as people have gotten wise to how much of a rip-off Gatwick Express is.
My only thought on it is that it doesn't tie up that many units, and they were looking for an easy to implement service 'improvement' to announce. I agree that it seems pointless.

Reinstating the service to what it was prior to COVID-19 and any passengers using it will be paying a premium fare, so revenue will go up which is what they are desperate for.

Isn't one difference these days that the Eastbourne & Littlehampton trains run as separate services rather than running combined?
Are there even paths for the 2 extra fresh air carriers to crawl between Victoria & Gatwick?

Will the few extra passengers justify the costs of leasing the unit, electricity etc?I have used Southern services for many years, they are not much slower, cheaper and in my opinion have more comfortable seats. Thameslink is preferred for the part of London I am in. However these look positive. I hope that Welwyn Garden City - Sevenoaks all day is real rather than speculation. That will need some timetable adjustments, but the already announced Hertford - Moorgate will require the Welwyn- Moorgates to be move irrespective to keep the clock face between Hertford and London.

If it was going to happen, it would’ve been in the press release

Like discussed in the other thread, the Sevenoaks service was always speculation and unlikely compared to the Hertford change

https://www.railforums.co.uk/thread...vices-from-dec-2026-4tph.300464/#post-7734898

I was going to ask about Welwyn Sevenoaks. So the feeling is it’s not happening, then?

I guess there’s already 4tph at Welwyn, Hatfield and PB so less of a priority than the Hertford line, and would there be enough drivers to deliver it?

Priority for them should be reinstating the Orpington service so the Catford loop regains 4tph, as the current service is poor for that part of South London

I would imagine the powers that be at Gatwick have been putting on the pressure for full restoration of the GatEx. It’s something that has been very precious to them for as long as I can remember and that walk up 15 minute frequency (same as Heathrow & Stansted) is a huge selling point regardless of the alternative London services every few minutes.

Be great to see trains running before 2pm on Sundays between Derby and Crewe.

Extremely useful alternative service to avoid rail replacement buses when other routes are closed due to engineering work!

That seems very positive. The new timetable is actually generally good but some obvious improvements such as that would be welcome. Praying they could also improve Lincoln- Cleethorpes to improve overcrowding and long gaps in the evening. (Although not sure if the have stock for extra trains)

How does that work then. Will it be a Charing Cross-Cannon St circular? And what will serve New Cross and St John’s?

It's been rumoured the Cannon Street to Dartford via Blackheath and Charlton will return for those stations.

The first schedules for the December 2026 timetable are intended to be published next month. Unclear if Southeastern's increased timetable will be fully represented in the first drop or not.

It isn't 100% confirmed, but the extra 2tph on the London Overground between Highbury and Islington and Crystal Palace should be starting from December 2026 - I do wonder if these services might lead to the demise of Southern's London Bridge to Norwood Junction peak extras, as at least southbound, the "missing" paths on the East London Line that the extra LO services will likely slot into would directly place them into the path of these services between New Cross Gate and Sydenham.

Pre-covid there were 16tph on the fast lines between Victoria and Selhurst. Reinstating the shuttle would bring it back up to 14tph.

Indeed and that resulted with the loss of the Victoria-Brighton operated by Southern.

4tph on the Gatwick Express means there will be a train at the platform for intending passengers to board, most minutes of each hour - the Up Brightons have a few minutes of dwell time at Gatwick, if running to schedule. I recall this was one of the selling points of GatEx when the concept was first launched, in the 80s.

Yes, the forerunner of the short lived Intercity Shuttle concept.

At Victoria, yes, but at Gatwick, not quite so much, and a worse position than now in that it will no longer be possible to alternate 4 / 5 for up trains, and 6 / 7 for down trains, which has been good for throughput.

Presumably quite a few changes will also need to be made to Southern diagrams out of Victoria now, as a few services have to use Platform 14 in the peaks now.

And even if you turn up at Victoria (rather than the most useful London Bridge) having just missed a Gatwick Express most passengers will board the next available Southern train for Littlehampton/Eastbourne/Portsmouth which generally will get them to Gatwick faster than waiting 15 minutes for the next Gatwick Express.

But it gives the government some spin at "Look how wonderful we are, we are increasing services to Gatwick Airport".

4tph off peak Moorgate to Hertford (2 continue to Stevenage as now), 6tph peak Moorgate to Hertford stays (evening peak is extended from Gordon Hill to Hertford finally), 2tph Sevenoaks to Welwyn runs all day instead of 4tph Moorgate to Welwyn (the quietest stations will not receive 4tph off peak). A small but much appreciated improvement, almost returning to the Dec 2019 timetable.

No, these are not rumours, Enfield Transport Users Group has mentioned it and has had several GTR representatives come into meetings lately.

However I think increasing Moorgate to Gordon Hill back to 8tph peak as was in 2019 should be an absolute priority, even with the full 717 fleet these trains are often back to full and standing like with the 313s.

Ignoring the Enfield group as they often spread speculation, which GTR representatives have said this?
