Simple question.

What's the most expensive point to point single ticket in the GB database? Rovers, seasons, returns all excluded.

It was a First Anytime Single from Penzance to Kyle of Lochalsh. The return tipped over £1000 a while back and was reduced a bit to avoid the adverse publicity (so unusually for a First Anytime fare, the return isn't double the single).

It's £538.40 by the way.

I'd imagine it probably still is that.

I think it was the 'Any Permitted' return that tipped over a grand. No problem for LNER though, having abolished returns!

It is indeed a fare of £538.40, which covers a multitude of stations in its clusters.

Next is £534.90, £530.10, £526.50, etc.

Same price as St Ives (Cornwall) to Wick, route ✠via London, or vice-versa, anytime first class. Priced by LNER. Long old journey!

If we exclude first class fares, then it becomes £339.50 between Altnabreac and Yarmouth Isle of Wight, of all things!

That is...quite the pairing. Perhaps there is a danger premium attached to Altnabreac

I have that route "not via London" fare as a bargain £334.90. Am I missing something? Also, could you still travel, not via London, instead with a £310.50 route "✠Any Permitted" Anytime Single ticket? If so, what extra validity does the additional price confer?

City Thameslink to Blackfriars, £17 per mile (using an Anytime First class ticket):
No, that's not even close.

Highbury & Islington to Caledonian Road & Barnsbury has a first class single at £12.30, for a journey that takes 1 minute, and takes you 0.45 miles (by the sectional appendix). On a train without first class. £27.33 per mile.
