Last time I checked the website there was nothing going on, I assume that’s still the case.

The railway's article on Wikipedia (which is not good for railway information) has had a warning since December 2024 about how the article "has not been updated to reflect the fact the railway has closed." Not many people seem to know what has happened.

Its temporarily closed pending agreements with TfW.

The Vale council sold the site to TfW about 3-4 years ago and the depot was subsequently brought back into use for storing the 756s prior to their full introduction and has since become a train crew depot again with units stabling at Barry overnight to free up space at Canton.

The BTR relocated a lot of it's stock to the shed at Plymouth Road (Barry Island) and there are a small group of people working down there regularly.

I think there had been some plans to try and operate as it did before (to Morrisons) but I think it got scaled back to just the Waterfront however I think TfW have a lot more to say on the matter.

As for the list,

Iris was sold to the Plym Valley Railway
Susan, 08503, 73118 are still there as is 5539
6686 & 92245 moved to a private site
20228 & 73133 were covered in a previous answer

I have my doubts as to whether it'll open to the public again. Unfortunately I've lost touch with the contacts I had there

From Bros radio FB in 2021 the tourist railway was still in the 20 year lease and planning to run steam trains weekly, in 2022 TfW took over the railway.
The MK2 carriages are now shops on site in the New goods shed development.

Good there is some static carriage preservation to help local business, sad there are no working preserved trains there, but not far away there are other preserved lines, like the Gwili Railway and the Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr Railway

The 73 is 'stuck' in the main shed at Barry. The others are over in the shed on the Island. 5539's overhaul is coming along well. The 08 is used a reasonable amount on site. I'm not sure if Susan made it over

So Steam Railway (issue 584 May-June 2026) actually addressed this issue in an article about the Barry Scrapyard locos that are yet to be restored (context: they where primarily addressing this as part of a theme with the Severn Valley Railway seeing GWR large Prarie 4150 nearing the end of its restoration from Barry Scrapyard condition).

Anyway, with regards to the Barry Tourist Railway locos.

  • GWR 4575 class No: 5539 - will run on the Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway once restored, boiler being restored at the Flour Mill workshop.
  • GWR 56xx No:6686 - believed to be at NL Engineering Ltd near Bolton.
  • BR 9f No: 92245 - also at NL Engineering Ltd near Bolton.
