Similar to CCTV camera

I have noticed these devices sorted about at various stations. Today I photographed one as I am curious as to what’s its functionality is?

The device, at the top of the post, looks like it has a white disk where the camera would be and was pointing towards the four foot.

The photograph attached was taken at Windermere today.

It's a mass detector, they are used by the information system to detect the presence of a train.

I don't think they are used anymore, they were originally installed by TPE when they managed the station. Typically each platform will have two, one monitoring for arrivals and the other for departures.

Photographing anything that might be or looks like security equipment could get you into trouble, even if it isn't actually security related.

And the other device, below the one with the disc, does look like a security camera. Photographing them is strictly banned as I understand it.

I don't suppose there was anyone around to enforce this in this case though.

No. There is no law or rule against taking photos of security equipment.

It may look suspicious in certain cases in which case it could raise questions, but it's not illegal.

When I said "banned" I did not mean "illegal", I meant "not allowed". Although it's possible it could be covered by one of the more general railway bylaws.

BTW Try this at a major London terminal (for example) and you will probably find yourself arrested on suspicion of some sort of "preparation for an act of terrorism" offence.

You’ll certainly be detained, searched and person checked - but unless you refuse to the legal requirement to provide your name / dob and address you won’t be arrested.

Whether one person finds a behaviour odd, or unusual doesn’t make it illegal - something a significant number of police constables have difficulty with.

Often quoting “current climate” as a their reasonable suspicion to detain / gather personal data and search.

If you really were preparing an act of violence against our country would you really wander into a major railway station and actively take overt pictures of cctv cameras and other security equipment ? Unless your the worlds stupidest Terry the terrorist !

The police namely BTP have in the past assisted murderers in their slaughter of innocent people (Manchester arena) - officers assigned to a position abandon their posts to have meal break.
