Interrail Passes

When I stated it was a paper pass by ticking the box, the yellow button leading to the next (input passenger details) page became inactive. I could only activate it by ticking digital pass, then onto the next page where passenger details were input, then back to the previous page to tick the paper pass box, then forward again to passenger details to now fill in start date box, then forwards to payment.

Maybe the system just crashed on me, however I got there in the end and with discount of 15% too!

That might be a case of page, or some parts of it, not (or not yet) fully loaded.

By now there are even a few countries that do not even have any old-style ticket-office anymore.

I think Sweden and Finland are in the few countries where one can not activate the Eurail ticket at all.

Surely Tampere and Helsinki are able to do it? Even in Sweden I'd have thought staff on board would have a stamp for times of disruption even if it's very rarely used

VR's remaining ticket offices at Tampere and Helsinki have been closed. Helsinki gets a new travel information point, and their travel inspiration agents (sic) don't handle tickets, it appears.

Not entirely sure about Sweden but I doubt onboard staff would have the standard rubber stamp and ink in their pockets!

Helsinki is apparently still open and selling tickets as of today (and probably the only place in the world that can book Interrail sleeper reservations on VR without paying 4,55 € in phone booking fees).

Last year and the year before, global and most national passes had 20% off in late June / early July, but that wasn't the case in 2023 or (with the bigger 50th anniversary sale in May) 2022, so I wouldn't assume that there'll be one between April and November (Black Friday / Save and Donate sales have been more consistent, but of course doesn't help for a trip in September).

I was a bit unclear I think. So I clarify that last October VR decided to roll out a new concept, replacing their current ticket offices with customer points. Tampere didn't go through, as was planned, though. Seven ticket sales jobs were lost in the process: 3 at Tampere and 4 at Helsinki. Speaking of the new customer point, it is unclear if Interrail reservations can be made there or not... (In many countries you can just book your reservations online. Why Finland's VR is not doing that, I do not know.)

Good news for anyone planning to use the new GoVolta services from Amsterdam to Hamburg and Berlin. These are loco hauled with non Aircon opening window stock ex SCNB. I enquired about using inter-rail and they replied saying they're in discussions with Eurail and hope to be able to offer inter-rail holders seat reservations in a few months. So fingers crossed might be good for the autumn.

I would suggest contacting Eurail or possibly the relevant operator (Jungfrau Management who run a number of railways, funiculars, cable cars etc. in the region). Their website lists their email as info@jungfrau.ch

I think since the expectation is that most people are using tickets that are part of the (interavailable) Swiss Pass ticketing scheme, ticket acceptance is not really 'required'.

I went to Lauterbrunnen / Mürren last year. From Interlaken including the various trains etc I believe this was around £30 (but I can’t remember the exact details).

I would be inclined to ask on the spot. Mürren is part of the Swiss base network so there ought to be arrangements in place for all valid tickets.

Although the Swiss base network is not exactly the same as where Interrail is valid.

There are several lines where the Generalabonnement is valid but Interrail isn't.
The BOB and BLM only started accepting Interrail as of 2024.

Can I purchase a Eurail pass at a European train station? I will be in Europe ( i have a two month pass) and my brother may visit me for two weeks. The station will be Zurich. So, I'm wondering if i can buy a paper pass at Zurich or I assume he could also get a digital (paperless) pass once he lands if he can't get a paper one. Thanks

Only in some countries at some stations. In Switzerland, SBB will offer you the mobile pass at a rather unfavourable exchange rate.

Hi, I had a question. Has anybody bought a rail pass recently ( a paperless of course) and had it shipped to the U.S. and I was wondering how soon it arrived? My brother may meet me in Europe...he would leave July 5th...I'll be there and from what I understand, Zurich station doesn't sell the Eurail passes. I know, I could go digital for him, but I never have and I'm not too tech savvy. I will be in Vienna before he comes and maybe they sell passes. And I can buy a pass without him present as long as I have all his information correct? Thanks
