Can anyone confirm which way the locos are facing? According to the roster the 9F was leading today towards Grosmont, so I'd assume it's tender/bunker first?
Edit: I've seen a photo of the 9F and it's running tender first. An interesting choice.

Apparently it runs that way because otherwise it wouldn't be able to take on water at Goathland as the loco is too long. The loco would have to run past the stop sign to do so. Travelled behind it today and asked the driver on arrival at Goathland

NYMR locos usually face south [to keep water over crown of boiler on longest steepest gradient]- therefore tender first when departing Pickering.

Read an article today (think it was a tees side paper that the propping up of bridge 42 is a bigger job than expected and as a result services through to grosmont and Whitby will not start until around the end of April.

BRIDGE 42 UPDATE
We are currently repairing Bridge 42, which sits
between the tunnel and Grosmont station.
Unfortunately, the work required to resume
services over the bridge will not be completed
until 25 April. As a result, at the start of the 2026
season we will be running our reduced yellow
timetable between Pickering and Goathland only.
I understand that it has now gone back to end of May, with services to Whitby resuming on 1 June.

Definitely predicted this, when I heard their chairman on Green Signals suggesting the Environment Agency permits would be easy it rang massive alarm bells as I don't know anyone who has ever received one and said that!

Is the MPD effectively cut off by these propping works (appreciate once propped it'll be ok). As far as I know, the only route from the MPD to the rest of the railway (i.e. Goathland etc) is via the crossover on the other side of the bridge near to the village itself with no crossover on the MPD side of the tunnel unless they have installed one recently?

They slew the track at the start of the closure.

Ah right. Well done them and thanks for the picture. I presume that longer term they'll slew this back to the original arrangement rather than put in a crossover to save on any additional signalling changes. Nevertheless, it's always been a strange arrangement to me that to get a loco to Pickering you first have to go back to Grosmont but then I can't really see a reason to change it beyond general resilience.

I would imagine it would revert back to the original alignment but it would make sense to put a crossover in there..

I assume a loco would need to get the token from Grosmont signalbox. Given it's such a long way, if it were me, I'd take my engine rather than walk it!

Easy enough to put an Intermediate Token machine in a hut along with a ground frame - but I suspect neither is worth doing for a small number of light loco movements.

It would be very costly to put in a crossover and it would need revised signalling, and probably a ground frame release affair. The engine would then set back to collect a token from the box, thus defeating the purpose of it. An intermediate token machine would be another level of faff and expense altogether.

Originally a scissors crossover was planned at the tunnel and signalling was provided for it. Very nice to have, but they were unable to progress it.

What about a temporary wooden single line train staff for the Goathland - Grosmont MPD section? Effective and minimal expense involved.

More pertinently, they might try and fix the access to the Goathland loop, the two bridges there with 5mph restrictions , the culvert at Fen Bog 5mph restriction, and the mile long 10mph restriction approaching Levisham.
A functional Goathland loop would mean using one loco and halving costs in the present situation.

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I have a query on the timetable if anybody is in the know.
If a train in the timetable has a "y" in the header denoting a diesel loco, does the diesel only work the Grosmont - Whitby section?

Thanks

I’m sure “they” will be happy to accept your cheque.

Surely the engine would need a token before it used the crossover, as it would be entering the single line section? Unless Grosmont station limits were extended out to include the crossover?

I would have thought that providing a simple token-released ground-frame and intermediate token machine would be a lot simpler than revising Grosmont signalling to include the crossover?

A second access to the MPD at Grosmont has been on the cards for many a year, but mothing ever got past a drawing stage.
Maybe now it may get to an actual thing in the ground in a few years time.

I'm not so sure. The mpd having independent access to Grosmont station, without affecting the single line to Goathland, is the ideal solution. Which is what they will have again once the bridge is properly repaired. Once that is again available, how often would a second access actually be used?

If the materials were already available, and just needed volunteer labour to install, perhaps. They might be able to use a second hand turnout for the shed half of the crossover, but the one on the running line side would need to be of decent quality. If they needed to buy a new turnout for that, I doubt the cost could be justified. Particularly as a previous poster has pointed out, there are plenty of more important things needing money spent on them.

If the crossover was within station limits - between the advanced starter [section signal] and the station - then no token required for any move over the crossover onto the single line and toward the station - the crossover being controlled from the signal box - and the movement controlled by ground position signals. The current temporary slew is outside station limits - if a crossover was to become a permanent feature at that location - it would require the repositioning of the down distant / outer home / inner home signals - and the advanced starter - which is ion the same bracket as the inner home. Moving the signals would be far simpler than providing an intermediate token machine.

No - the line has been under an "Engineer's Possession" since traffic was suspended last December - that means he has the token - allowing him to sever the single line and slew it to connect into the mpd headshunt - it also means he has to be present - with the token - if any loco is to leave the mpd and venture out onto the running line. And to make sure no loco does so in his absence - the "closure" rails in slewed section linking the running line to the mpd headshunt are removed - and only replaced when the engineer is present. Recent online clips of Omaha out on test up the bank to Goathland clearly show the presence of the Engineer who has the Possession of that line and token.

Yes - that is the intention!

So the bridge has been deemed useable now and NYC have promptly decided the footbridge next to it is too dangerous to use and closed it

Will this mean that visitors can no longer walk from Grosmont station to the loco shed, or is there another path?

That is a proper shambles.... Feel for the cafe there, imagine this will make it impossible for them to continue trading.

That would indeed be my interpretation.
