probably best paying the penalty fare unless there is some technicality in the paperwork that she can get off on.

This case seems ludicrous to me. Even more that we now hear many of these tickets have no name written in so this is NOT actually a real policy they care about after all!

To think that after persuading you to accept compensation for a delay in kind rather than cash to their benefit, they can then trick you into forcibly handing over even more money to them rubs salt into the wound!

I'd be expecting a big apology from the train company for this, Raise a complaint, go to the Ombudsman, Transport Focus or your MP as necessary.

I'd even try a cheeky FOI to find out how many of these tickets they've issued and how many of them have names filled in and how many don't! If they don't record that information, and people reading this thread can come forward with actual examples of tickets without names, it would speak volumes!

They will have the information, a simple dump from the transactional system, filter blank names - if they come back to you saying they don't have it, they're pulling your leg!

They are handwritten, so I doubt they do have a record of whether a name was written on the card.

These are handwritten. Their system will have a record of who the claimant was but not what was or wasn’t written on each ticket

Just feels very petty of that Northern RPI to actually enforce the rule that 'the name written on the front must be the traveller'. It's not like someone sharing a season ticket or reusing an unmarked ticket.

I've only ever had one blank out of perhaps 30-40 free tickets.

I have had such tickets with first & last names, last name & initial, blank. Also had them with no reference number on the back.

With regards to names, looks like those with a non gender specific name (e.g. Lesley) could transfer a ticket to someone of a different gender with impunity.
