The bits of HS2 in place and unused for the next X years (where X = <insert any number of decades>)

A platform heaving with commuters standing in the rain and cold just wanting to get home, and a rusty 2 car Sprinter turns up.

The amount of Graffiti on buildings & bridges along the lines as you travel along.

The part abandoned Masbrough Station buildings & platforms near Rotherham on the avoiding line is a pretty depressing sight

Sounds like Platform 14 at Manchester Piccadilly, not the best place to wait on a cold & rainy day

I remember the olden days when the clotted cream got moved around in wagons with tent-like hoods on to keep the flies off. All goes in bogie hoppers now, what little traffic there is. And all the jam traffic was lost to road decades ago.

For me a sad sight is the remnant bridge abutments for once great bridges that were demolished as soon as the lines closed in the 50s and 60s, all that effort and engineering just ripped down leaving an orphaned stump of masonry behind. Crumlin, Belah, Severn. What great monuments they were, scrapped in haste.

Add Walnut Tree to the latter. It’s quite surreal walking up a dirt track which leads to the portal of the disused Walnut Tree Tunnel (which itself is a sad sight, especially the way it’s been cleanly severed by a quarry), however it’s possible to walk onto the west abutment of the former viaduct and visualise what used to be.

PTSO or platform depending on the weather
Not intended as a criticism - but are you old enough to remember what a lot of places were like in the late 1970s to mid 1980s?
Indeed, I remember very well the BR days when many stations were really scruffy and run-down (and the trains!) but at least some got a spruce-up from time to time; NSE days were better and the early days of Southern (my neck of the woods) when many stations were spruced up.

Stations with 80% of the platform pointlessly barriered off and gradually disappearing under moss and bushes while the railway insists that you can't have more than 2 carriages because the platform is "too short".

Bits of live main line where the drainage is chronically knackered so the train runs through such a lush green growth of swamp grass that you can't see where the track is and are constantly expecting it to slowly topple over sideways into the marsh.

Complaints about "lack of capacity" over routes which used to have twice or more the number of tracks (and routing possibilities) that they do now, and the immense and tortured collection of spurious reasons why they "can't" just put it back then.

Perth station . What a dump to the ordinary passenger
I haven't been to Perth for many years, it was in a bit of sorry state when I visited it then. You could clearly see it was once a grand building. The unsympathetic aesthetic of the lift and footbridge Network Rail built is pretty poor too.

Genuinely surprises me, I think Perth’s a rather nice station!

The saddest train has to be the engineering one used to recover the track after a line closes.

A sad sight, in a different way, is what's left in the Barrhead area of the Caledonian Railway's viaducts, built for a line which never fully, or in part, opened or ever saw much traffic. A complete waste of money!

It's been sad seeing the flowerbed on Crewe's Platform 5 go from a hopeful 'Destination: Crewe HS2' display to a patch of dying flowers, and finally to just an empty bed of soil.

The saddest sight for me was when a couple of years ago I saw the aftermath of a person who had been hit by a train. This was a Flitwick. I was warned by an official not to look but I did anyway. My thoughts were with the family. Of the deceased but also with the driver of the train.
All I will say it was not a pleasant sight. That's coming from an ex LUL station supervisor.

The new Sunderland station ticket hall is a sad sight, sums up the value engineered rubbish we often get when some money is spent.

Look on the bright side - once you've entered the station you are one step closer to leaving Sunderland.

It must be dreadful for those at the depot having to clean body parts from the front and underside of the train plus track maintenance staff (?) who have to remove parts from the track. It is now such a common occurrence.

A departure board showing only cancelled/heavily delayed trains and no alternative arrangements.

At the moment, the Gordon/Union Street entrances to Glasgow Central and a good portion of the main concourse still cordoned off. Not likely to return to full use before the end of July either, when the demolition and removal of the remains of Union Corner is meant to finally finish. After that, what will be left is another gap site right in the middle of perhaps the most prominent cross-roads/meeting places in the city and a terrible, yet fitting welcome for visitors once they step off their train.

Despite knowing that a massive bullet was dodged that night in that Central was saved, the scars of March 8th/9th 2026 will linger for a long time.

I don't know its current condition or even location, but the preserved APT at Crewe looked seriously sad with its faded paintwork. Hardly an advert for past UK rail innovation.
It ought really to have been kept in working order.
I was under the impression that the APT tilt functionality has been restored for demonstration purposes.

the scrapyard at Carnforth that's claimed to be a railway preservation centre
Other than some third party steam and diesel overhauls, Carnforth has not been associated with preservation since 1997.
