Are the units currently allocated for training ready to go into passenger service once no longer required for that purpose, or do they still need to go through the final shakedown process?

I’ve asked this question twice and never got a reply. It seems to be a mystery!

Training units are all pretty much ready for service, for the obvious reason that you wouldn't want crew trained to understand train behaviour in one way yet in service act differently. There is usually a small list of items to be touched up before service, and a final sweep done, but that is about it. There wouldn't be any major work to be done.

Many thanks. How long until these four units are released from training duties and made available for service? I assume the conversion courses are nearly complete now and that would release a couple at least?

701029 has made its way to Wimbledon tonight after several months at Farnham. Believe that leaves 004 and 040 as the other two non-passenger service at Farnham which have been there even longer.
Am I right thinking that there are now 42 701 diagrams currently operating?
Close, there's currently 43 daily diagrams.

Looks like there may be a second move intended from Bicester to DerbyLL this week.
The light engine and drag back for tomorrow, that I had assumed were a backup, now has another light engine back to DerbyLL on Friday as well.

How many diagrams will there be with the introduction of the new timetable on 17 May?

There was a path in (two weeks ago) for a delivery from Bicester to Wimbledon.
But it does seem DerbyLL might be where they go first from Bicester, perhaps Bicester was storage for DerbyLL.

I know almost all of the 701/0s had a "charge" against them (as in SWRs leasing company had been charged for them).
I have no idea if SWRs leasing company own some, many or all of the 701/5s ?.

SWR have accepted at least 27 of the 701/5s from the 2024 leasing company accounts. The "charge" is from another organisation, registering a claim to the asset as the unit was agreed as collateral. Similar to how a bank will have a charge on the land registry when giving a mortgage.

I wouldn't read too much into them going to Derby. I doubt Wimbledon could accept a pair of 701/5s on a weekly basis, the 458/4s would need to start moving elsewhere (whether SWR location or not) which hasn't happened yet. Long Marston had few 701/5s and clearing the location would save costs, a couple of those 701/5s were wanted for other activities. Bicester in contrast has a lot more units and the focus is on the 701/0s.

With the short notice 455 storage at Derby, it's possible that opened up conversations or the same contract could be used for temporary 701/5 storage. I'd expect these moves are for commercial reasons rather than a need for the units to be at Derby.

There are 83 charges, nothing added for 18 months.

From memory two of the early charges were simulators and spare parts, which suggests 81 of 90 units are mortgaged.

Haven't got time to check which ones aren't (need to click on each pdf, scroll to end of document for unit / vehicle numbers)

Thanks @Stephen42 and @Snow1964 .

I also see todays 5Q57 has not left Bicester yet any way. Now at least 75 minutes late.

I suspect tomorrows light engine Bicester back to DerbyRTC is more likely to run !. (If that is connected).

I notice that the diagram commencing with 2U09 is a 701 today.

Is this a temporary change today, perhaps as a consequnce of weekend engineering work, or is this a 44th 701 diagram replacing a pair of 458/4 which look to have been reduced to 18 diagrams (9 pairs)? Ironically 2U09 was one of the very first diagrams to go over to 701 but subsequently reverted to 458/4 in May 2025.

Booked as a 701 all week, so possibly a new diagram

701 038 in trouble at Motspur Park this morning (blocking up line to W’loo)
Wasn't this to do with the points failure at Wimbledon, not a problem with the unit itself?

Hi - you're probably right - the guard on 2M12 (07:04 from Chessington S) said that there was a "broken train" (his words) @ Motspur Park (this was 701 038) - however, this was probably more an issue with the signalling problem as all trains crawled from Motspur Pk onwards. A 17 min late departure from Malden Manor became a 52 mins late arrival at Waterloo

It's an ill wind...........
Having just missed a rounder at Vauxhall and resigned myself to a 15 minute wait i was surprised to see the next train was a Shepperton (2h37) , running 18 minutes late - presumably due to the disruption earlier. Inevitably, as Shepps' don't call at Earlsfiled, we caught up the rounder ahead, and was 21 down at Kingston. I noticed it was then going to run non-stop from Kingston to Shepperton, but it didn't achieve much as RTT shows it reached Shepperton 25 minutes down, and the following train hot on its heels.

I can't remember the last time I found a working toilet on a 701 - both were out of action on this one.
