Hi all, heading over to Sicily this week and then the night train to Milan. Couple of questions/guidance to ask..

Milan, is there a rover ticket to bash in the area?
Ive noticed there is still some loco hauled, any tips for locations for haulage in that area.
And finally, any tips for Scilly I notice the ferrovia circumetnea is not working, we are staying in Palermo. Anything else of railway interest in the area?

No idea about Sicily, but for Lombardy and Milano there is a good value rover ticket I'd recommend

Lombardy is very well covered (Io viaggio in Lombardia ticket - available at ticket machines in Lombardy). Not aware of anything specific to Sicily.

Given that digital Regional tickets otherwise require activation for a specific service (and cannot be changed once a certain deadline has passed, 5 mins before scheduled departure IIRC) I'd say there is definitely some value in a flexible ticket that allows unlimited Regional travel.

It doesn't take that much travel for it to pay for itself, even at the higher 3-day rate of €35 which is now charged.

From Palermo the line up to Agrigento is well worth a trip, and there’s a nice town or world-renowned archaeological site at the end of the journey. The line along the coast to Messina isn’t bad either, but you’ll cover that on the sleeper.

In Milan you may wish to combine a Day ticket with a Swiss Day pass and do the Bernina Express, it’s a long day and probably not as scenic in summer as winter but it’s still probably worth a trip.

Alternatively, you can do some nice circular journeys around the Lakes too, although some venture into Switzerland but there are endless possibilities.

If you’re doing multiple days in Milan you can get a rover that covers several days and it’s cheaper per day the more days you do.

The central and most interesting section either side of Bronte is still working:

but it's a trek from Palermo. Aside from Agrigento, the line round to Trapani via Castelvetrano-Marsala is worth it: the southern section quite busy, the cross-country bit definitely not! Shame the direct route across from Alcamo D stays mothballed.
