Looking at BR Fares, the availability of 16-17 Saver fares in Scotland appears hit and miss, only being available between a few destination pairs. For example, fares are listed between Inverness and Kingussie, Aberdeen and Kingussie, Inverness and Aviemore but not Inverness or Aberdeen and Newtonmore.

Obviously 16 & 17 year old Scottish residents are entitled to a complimentary Young Scot Card which offers 33% off most ScotRail fares, but not fares set other than by ScotRail and is not available to visitors. And also only offers 33% rather than the 50% of the 16-17 Saver.

Anyone know why this is the case?
(I do note that BR Fares has 16-17 Saver flagged as "geographically restricted" however the Railcard website makes no such mention)

The 16-17 saver just is blanket not available on ScotRail and Caledonian Sleeper. The only Scottish services it's available on in LNERs and Avantis.
The bottom of a 16-17 saver comes with the endorsement of not valid on ScotRail.

Thanks for the explanation.
Wouldn't it be nice if the website told you this before purchase...

In theory it should be possible to apply the discount to any pair of stations, where both stations are served by an English based TOC, but not necessarily the same TOC.

Notwithstanding the fact that the railcard is not valid on ScotRail, this creates fares where there is no valid journey opportunity.

It appears that the criterion is: is the origin served by a TOC other than ScotRail/Cal Sleeper AND is the destination served likewise. If so, allow the discount.

We do report these anomalies as found and hopefully they are removed forthwith.
