I may have said this already, but IMO the solution is cutting all of the useless parts of XC. Does Plymouth really need an Edinburgh service or would 1tph to Birmingham suffice?
- Does anywhere north of Edinburgh actually need XC - would more LNER or fast ScotRail services be better instead?
- Could Bournemouth instead have, say, 1tph to Moor Street calling at Brockenhurst, So'ton Central, Airport, Winchester, Basingstoke, Reading, Oxford, Banbury, Leamington and Moor Street - there's little demand from Southampton/Bournemouth going north of Birmingham and those people (majority for Manchester) can change at Birmingham or in London.
- TfW could take over Cardiff-Birmingham (also probably serving Moor St rather than New St) as XC seem unable of running a reliable service on that line west of Birmingham.
- Give Stansted-Peterborough to Greater Anglia, send the Stansted-Birmingham passengers via Tottenham Hale or via Peterborough (via Tottenham Hale tends to be faster than the direct XC a fair bit of the time)
- Manchester-Birmingham should never have been XC in the first place, WMT or Avanti can have it and run more than 4 car trains.
XC's core market is Bristol-Birmingham-Derby-northern ECML. They should focus on that rather than trying to run to everywhere and ending up running to nowhere.
