NRCOT 14.3 - Non-stop Combination During a Diversion

I am planning on doing a day with the West Yorkshire Train and Bus day ranger this Saturday (9th May) and an interesting ticketing situation has arisen.
As I understand, with NRCOT 14.3 I can combine this with a return to a boundary station and not have to stop there.

My intention is to do Sheffield to Leeds on CrossCountry with a return from Sheffield to the first station the zonal ticket is valid.
Originally, I was intending to buy a Sheffield to Moorthorpe return, as the non-public timetable websites suggest this is normally the route XC takes.
For reference, on Saturday 30th May 2026, the train is currently showing as going via Moorthorpe:

However, it looks like this Saturday, due to engineering work at Bolton-upon-Dearne, the train is going via Barnsley and Wakefield Kirkgate.
From live rail record (which has a useful feature to compare the original and amended timetable, other websites are available):

I haven't bought tickets yet.
Q1: Do I buy a return from Sheffield to Moorthorpe or a return from Sheffield to Darton (I assume the XC train will pass through there) or something else?
Q2: In general if I buy a ticket (e.g. had I bought Sheffield to Moorthorpe, or if I buy to Darton and then miraculously the engineering work is cancelled and the original route reinstated) and the exact route of the train changes, is the combination still valid and what should I do?
Q3: As I understand it, the detailed routing information is not "public facing" and does not form part of the process of buying tickets or the "published timetable" - but if NRCOT 14.3 exists, then how else is a customer going to know which way a train goes other than through these timetable data websites?
Q4: Has anyone tried this before - do guards/revenue easily honor non stop splits under 14.3 or is it something that they challenge/question?

Generally speaking knowledge of splits where the train calls being valid is very good. It's been a long time since I heard anyone kicking off about a split (and there were some horror stories back in the day!). I don't have as much experience with non-stop splits but I reckon you're highly likely to encounter issues as I doubt that staff will have been given much if any training on the subject and I reckon their natural inclination therefore will be to assume it isn't valid.

I had no issues on LNER with a Doncaster to South Elmsall and a WY Day Ranger.

I think it's a bit pessimistic to think staff won't have encountered this: season ticket holders wanting to travel beyond the validity of their season ticket is not that rare an occurrence. Some staff understand the rules. Some staff do not understand the rules. Some of the latter are confidently wrong, which is what you don't want.

On the question how the passenger is meant to know what the boundary station is, as I say, the main use cases are seasons, in which case the passenger is likely to know which way the trains go.

The situation where you're making a one-off journey with a Day Ranger in combination with a ticket to get you in and out of the zone, in an rea you're not necessarily familiar with, is the rare one. The Venn diagram of passengers who know about rangers and rovers and non-stop splits, and passengers who know about - or can find - geeky websites that tell you all the stations trains are booked to pass through, has a very substantial overlap, I suspect. The former may well be a subset of the latter.

I have done a non stop split once using a season as you have mentioned on the WMR Birmingham - Hereford normal route (no change to usual timetable), the guard checked both tickets and moved on.

In terms of the perception of revenue staff one of my friends said (in general about news and chat) obviously the negative experiences will be written about more and stand out. I have had a few poor experiences (though thankfully none have led to penalty actions) and I am quite an anxious person so I'm always wary.

To offset this, I will say that both NR and Avanti staff at New Street have always been a positive experience and service for me.

In terms of the immediate Saturday, it has worked out cheaper to buy an Advance to Leeds anyways.
