So anyone tried the newly refurbished lounge yet at Kings Cross?
I visited yesterday evening after arriving from Newcastle on the 18:01 arrival from Edinburgh and it was quite quite at this time but started to get slightly busier later.

Overall I found it to be a nice improvement, especially since some of the old furniture was getting quite worn out.
I like the new lighting as I felt it gave the lounge more of a first class feel.
It also feels more open now both through much of the seating being lower backed and the refreshments moving.
I was pleased to see they kept the individual mini desk seating round the back corner but I do wish they had kept some form of seating with full height/size tables as all the seating in the main area has the smaller round tables which are not the easiest to work from. It will also be interesting to see how the smaller tables manage when it gets busier or if people have to share tables.
Other than the wall decoration the toilets did not feel very different.

For drinks there were the usual LNER hot drinks machines. Bottled water and juice was also available.
For snacks there were the usual shortbread (Buttery Crumbly, Raspberry White Chocolate and Stem Ginger) as well as pretzels, crisps/proppadoms.

I am looking at tickets for 22nd May, for YRK to NCL. 0906, 0919 and 0930 and are all similarly prices. Would all include the full breakfast?
thanks

Officially from York to Newcastle only the 09:30 would include the Full LNER breakfast as it is the only journey over 60 minutes due to the menu stating the chef specials are available for journeys over 60 minutes.
From York even though the 09:30 terminates at Newcastle they should still offer the full menu (I have got the following 10:30 Newcastle terminator from York multiple times and received the full offering.
If may depend on how busy the service is and the staff you get as it is certainly possible to get the full breakfast in enough time on the other shorter services.

I've done something similar when I booked a Wednesday afternoon journey for June, from York to Newcastle

Between 17:06 and 18:19, there will be 5 LNER trains, but 4 of which will be under one hour. Only the 17:30 is over the hour, at 1h 5m so hopefully there'll be a meal. It was slightly cheaper too .. just an added bonus.

The 17:30 should be a dish menu anyway so not strict time restrictions are mentioned in the menu.
Its only the options under the chefs specials section of the signature menu that are restricted to journeys over 60 minutes, everything else (subject to availability) should be available York to Newcastle on all services.

I believe the northbound rest of day menu signature services via York are only the 12:03, 13:03, 13:30, 16:00, 17:00, 18:00 and 18:30 from London Kings Cross, all of which are under an hour York to Newcastle.

MrsC and I are travelling 1st Class from York to Inverness on the Highland Chieftain this coming Thursday (Dep 14:06 York; Arr 20:05 Inverness). MrsC hasn't travelled 1st Class for years and wants to know what she is going to get to eat! (I think she is having silver service visions).

The LNER website says that menu details will be available with the tickets, but they were issued through an agency so we didn't get that info. I recall finding details of what meal is served when, somewhere on the website but now I can't find it. Can anybody help?

You're quite right there did used to be a list, I'm sure I read somewhere that someone recently couldn't find it though so perhaps its been removed rather than updated.

A quick check on the booking engine shows your train as serving the "Signature" menu.

Am on 1S11, The Northern Lights, headed for Dundee. Boarded at Newcastle at 13:03 and they're still serving the breakfast menu until Edinburgh. So, the full LNER it is then.

It's still a very mixed bag.

On the 1400 Edinburgh to London today, between York and London, there was only one cold drinks round, which was offered long after the food. Then one hot drinks round. That's it.

On Sunday between Edinburgh and Darlington, there was similarly only one cold and one hot drinks offering. No offering of desert, however they did grudgingly provide one to anyone who specifically asked.

This isn't uncommon, and I guess is what people should now expect and bear in mind when considering if the upgrade is worth it (there will of course be various other factors), but some crews do offer a vastly better service than this. But don't count on it.

Bring your own drinks if you want more than one of each on a ~2-hour journey.

You've got a Newcastle crew to Newcastle then the same Inverness on-board crew the rest of the way (including chef), so I would imagine it'll be drinks/snacks to Newcastle then full signature menu north thereof.

Considering it was last week hopefully they had a good experience!

It's been a long week and it seems I can't read dates  Though that is the standard rostered turn for that service on weekdays so hopefully it's useful to someone else.

Indeed quite a long turn for the Inverness crew.

Crews were both very good - and we were served a choice from the Signature Menu between York and Newcastle and another between Edinburgh and Inverness. Can't say positive things about the choice, though. The chicken tagine on the second round was as tasteless as the mexican bean chipotle wrap on the first. Either something is wrong with my taste buds or LNER's spice cupboard is bare! (Unfortunately I am supposed to cut down on cheese, but did wish I could have had the croque monsieur).

Minor drama en route with two tanked-up very Scots m'laddos demanding a table to sit at to continue drinking. They were efficiently ejected at Stirling with minimal delay!

After finishing a 2 week All Line Rover a few days ago where I travelled on 30 LNER services in first class (of various journey lengths) I can say that overall the majority first class service on LNER was as expected, with a few services being much better than expected and a few services being worse than average but not bad with only 1 service where I was left disappointed.

On all services I used boarding at the origin station food orders were taken withing 15 minutes of departure with some form of drinks service being offered within this time as well.
One thing that I wish was improved on here is on a few services departing in the afternoon, originating at Newcastle, the hot drinks were offered effectively with the food orders but no cold drinks, including water, were offered until well over half an hour into the journey after food had been served. On rest of day menu services (everything but breakfast) I would much prefer a cold drink first and hot drinks later, after eating.
On some Edinburgh originating services crips and water were brought round immediately after departure which is something I would like to see on all services.

On services I boarded at an intermediate station the service was much more mixed depending if they had just finished offering a certain service.
For food service almost all services joining at an intermediate station orders were taken either within a few minutes of departure or after the following station where stations are closed together (such as Peterborough, Grantham). I thought this was fine as I would not expect food for journeys under around 30 minutes anyway. 1 service which was delayed after departing Doncaster I was waiting nearly an hour for food orders as they were planning on coming round after Newark, however the delay meant a long wait until food orders were taken when really they should have come round after it was clear the delay would be relatively significant.
For drinks service joining at intermediate stations, this is where I was more disappointed and had the only genuinely bad experience. If joining just after a hot or cold drinks service had finished it meant a long wait for that service. A few times staff were happy to get me a cold drink if requested which was nice to see.

The only genuinely poor service I had was on one journey where I boarded at Darlington heading towards Doncaster all I wanted was a water which I asked staff about when hot drinks came around but was told to wait until the cold drinks service was provided. The cold drinks service did not come around until around 2 minutes before Doncaster (over 45 minutes into my journey). They even came round with food immediately on departure from York so on a 50 minute journey I could have had a hot drink and full food service but not a simple still water. I can understand not offering any other soft drinks until the full service is provided but for a first class service a water should be provided if requested. The staff members attitude was not great here either with them just stating cold drinks are provided at regular intervals. Compared to basically all other first class intercity operators where catering is advertised, including Cross Country, this is the only time ever where I have effectively been refused a water.

The quality of food was good enough, although I would like to see one more hot dish on dish services.
I do wish they would bring back the file showing which services have which menu as I needed to put my own together using the LNER website booking tool which tool a while.
I also want them the be accurate on their booking site as to which menus are provided as some service switch from Signature to Dish mid journey but when booking, even if only travelling between dish stations, it shows up as signature.

Overall I was quite satisfied with the LNER services I used over the 2 weeks with most providing the service as expected. There were few standout journeys compared to Avanti West Coast but the offering was mostly consistent and as advertised.
I personally do not have an issue with the service feeling slightly rushed at times as LNER first class is usually quite busy so it makes sense to get through everyone as efficiently as possible.

Something I have noticed is that on the London Kings Cross departures I've travelled on, staff usually come around within a couple of minutes of departure to take food orders, followed closely by cold drinks, snacks and hot drinks.

However, on the Newcastle departures I've travelled on (when the service originates at Newcastle), service doesn't tend to commence for 15 minutes or more. Never really been sure why this differs.

I think its because they then do not need to come around again for Durham passengers and usually only take Darlington food orders after Northallerton. Although this does vary as I have been on services where service started immediately on departure from Newcastle but other times only just starting on the approach to Darlington.

We have had a few family issues over the last few weeks and to say thank you my mum booked us a fist class ticket from Darlington London on LNER to get back home after staying with her/visiting her in hospital. I would rather she hadn't as she could have spent the money herself but as I very rarely use fist class it was a nice gesture.

I have to say I was very impressed, even if it was an Azuma. I think we had 3/4 rounds of hot and cold drinks ( inc alcohol although there was no lager due to "on going supply issues") and the standard menu offering of food. Snacks/biscuits seemed to be offered freely with everything concluded with "would you like more than one"!

It was a lightly loaded train so the ambience was nice and it made a pleasant change from cattle class. No such offerings on LNWR ;)

overall result: Would recommend

You were very lucky. I've had just one drinks run of each and minimal of everything on several recent occasions travelling to London.

Good crews of the calibre you describe absolutely do still exist, but they aren't the majority.

I would suggest anyone booking first class should expect basic surly service and everything else is a bonus, so they aren't disappointed!

The lack of consistency is just something I can never get my head around - you would've thought TOCs would have 'mystery shoppers' to identify this kind of service, so it can then be addressed through training.

While I agree that in some cases for first class now there is unfortunately an expectation of basic surly service, this should not have to be the case.

Back in the day Virgin West Coast did have mystery shoppers. They were relieved of duties the day Avanti took over.

I travel regularly to London and Edinburgh from Yorkshire and have generally found that the service is better on the Scottish journeys (especially coming out of Edinburgh which is always excellent). That's not to say I've not had good service on London trains but it's certainly less consistent.

Does the LNER website no longer show the menu options for various northbound / southbound journeys ?

What would the menu options be for these trips please ..

Sunday 7th June NCL - YRK (10:27 - 11:29)

Sunday 2nd August NCL - YRK (10:27 - 11:29)

Wednesday 10th June YRK - NCL (17:30 - 18:35)

thank you

Perhaps it’s just me, but I’m finding the WiFi and mobile data coverage so poor on the majority of the route. To the point that it’s becoming the prime dissatisfaction of any journey I take, way more than the catering. I get better coverage when flying, which I’m increasingly choosing over the train for a number of reasons.

They have not published the list of menus for all services since the December timetable change.
When I just tried the website does not appear to be showing menus as it has been doing on the journey planner.

However, based on the most recent full list I created for myself the 17:30 from York on weekdays (15:33 from London Kings Cross) should be the Dish menu.

There are no Signature menu services on weekends so both the Sunday services will be the Dish menu (minus the weekday only option).
