Reading to Manchester disruption on XC - 03/05

I was booked on the direct 0915 service from RDG to MAN

Apparently someone has been hit by a train so no services running northwards

Om supposed to be going to the football at Old Trafford, 1530 KO. What are my options?

On XC website says the original service is starting from BHM, hourly at 01.

Can I use my ticket on AWC direct services to MAN? As it's 2h from EUS to BHM then another 1h40 to MAN.

I'm at PAD now.

You need to be asking CrossCountry what they will do to reroute you.

1015 and 1115 XC departures from/via Reading (to Manchester Piccadilly) seem to have run. No doubt would have been rammed.

Probably a mistake in hindsight. You can’t really do your own thing in these circumstances. Did a staff member actually suggest going to London?

I had been advised by staff at Reading to go into London & take an Avanti WC from Euston.

Although no official cross acceptance I spoke to someone at Euston who gave me a permit to travel to MAN at no extra cost.

Just arriving at MAN, so only around 30m later than original XC service.

While it is good that you were given a permit at Euston, you should really have been given it at Reading. I could see the situation where you arrived at Euston (or Paddington even) and staff there could see XC trains running again, and saying your ticket was not valid as no cross acceptance agreed.

The incident happened to your incoming train which was coming from the Eastleigh depot via an unusual route presumably because of engineering, and was at Winnersh Triangle (blocking swr and gatwick trains for most of the morning). Presumably XC managed to get trains sorted for the later services. A sad situation and Reading staff would have not had time to be briefed on the options.

I'm a little envious! In almost identical circumstances - Exeter to York when flooding closed the XC lines from Bristol to Birmingham and from Reading to Birmingham - I was advised by GWR to go to London and take an Avanti from Euston. Avanti staff flatly refused boarding and the ticket office refused to issue a permit or change of route excess!
