Just checking on the bus home, I noticed that the Stagecoach Yorkshire 90 has three supermarkets as timing points, and another 3/4 stops called out for shops.

I'm sure this can be bettered - anyone care to weigh in?

There is probably a thread for stops named for pubs as well, but I'll leave that for another day!

(Clowne Tesco, Tapton Sainsburys and Whittington Moor Tesco are the timing points, Brampton Morrisons, Barrow Hill Post Office and Clowne B&M are the others, with the generic Walton Shops only being a calling point in one direction)

In Scotland, the 181 and 181A (Muirdrum to Forfar) has Monifieth Tesco, Ethiebeaton Dobbies, Forfar Asda, Forfar Tesco and Forfar Aldi as timing points. It stops outside a Morrisons Daily and Lidl in Forfar, and various shops in Carnoustie including a co-op.

When the 'NAPTAN' (bus stops) database was being set up - getting on for 25 years ago now - the advice at the time was not to use pub names, as they were tending to change at frequent intervals, or close down.

It now seems to be schools (or 'academies') that seem to change name every year or two...

Makes sense, but someone must have forgotten to tell Derbyshire CC this! The X17 has something like 8 stops named after pubs, several of which are timing points.

It always was guidance rather than law.

Likewise, the theory was that everyone should use the 'official' NAPTAN name for bus stops but operators can and do use their own names in printed publicity, just that this can then clash with what appears in anything that's fed by electronic data.

I'm aware of one operator (who had better remain nameless) who operated services in a town that had been a 'boundary' operating area under the national bus company, but after deregulation, had ended up with both sides of that town's network. In their printed timetables, one town centre stop had two different names depending on which historic operator's route it had been...

I can see both sides - I can think of a few pub names in London that have given their name to areas / london underground stations / roundabouts, in some cases many years after the pub closed and was demolished, but I can see it being potentially confusing if you've recently moved in to an area.

Stagecoach Hull's route 11 between Hull and Castle Hill Hospital Cottingham has stops at Beverley Road Tesco, Kingswood ASDA, North Point Shopping Centre, Holderness Road Morrisons and Holderness Road ASDA. It also serves shopping ares in Cottingham village centre and Hull City Centre.

East Yorkshire's route 57 must be unusual in that it serves three supermarkets of the same brand, plus others; it has stops at ASDA Bilton, Shannon Road shops, Holderness Road Morrisons, Holderness Road ASDA, Hessle Road ASDA, Hessle Road Lidl as well as serving shopping areas at Hessle Square and Hull City Centre.

An example being “New Malden, The Fountain”, which is now “New Malden, Fountain Roundabout”
