Hi, like others on here I have unfortunately been caught with an expired railcard. I purchased a valid ticket to London but due to this year being exceptionally busy for me, I missed the email that my railcard needed to be renewed. Today I was told by an inspector that I will likley receive a notice of intent to prosecute for this. I haven't had this situation happen to me before. I don't usually take trains to London so my trainline history will only show my tickets to a local station where I go to work with a friend (although I'm unsure if they will dig into my travel history). These tickets are the same price with or without railcard.
I hadn't realised my railcard expired in February. I initially thought it expired in December when I opened the app but after calming down I realised it was on February this year. Still not good, but better than December.
I immediately apologised for my oversight to the inspector and offered to renew my railcard then and there but unfortunately was told that this wouldn't be possible and they would still need to give me a notice. I am incredibly scared of being prosecuted.
I immediately sent an email to the prosecutions email with an explanation and apology as soon as I got home and will be sending them a letter also this week before I receive a formal letter in the mail. From your perspective and your knowledge, how likely are thameslink to persecute me? Is there anything I can do to ensure this doesn't go to court and is settled instead?
If you require any more context please let me know.
Many thanks,
K
