Some fairly severe changes coming up with First Essex in the Southend / Rayleigh area.

Reports are from local councillors on Facebook who have been in various consultations with First management.

20: Southend to Hullbridge
Withdrawn bar the 20S school variant and some early morning / late evening runs.

25: Southend to Basildon
Rerouted around Grove Road / Bull Lane to cover parts of 20 route withdrawn.

27: Southend to Canvey
Major rerouting to now become a Hullbridge to Canvey route. This covers off parts of 20 route withdrawn.

28: Southend to Basildon
Frequency increase, higher than the every 10 minutes daytime frequency already offered to cater for passengers connecting off the 27.

X30: Southend to Stansted Airport
Will now serve all local stops between Rayleigh and Southend Hospital to cater for loss of 20 service.

Wow. I’d heard rumours about changes to the 20 but never thought they’d be that drastic. Some truly bizarre decisions there and I have many questions. What about the not insignificant number of passengers who want to go from Benfleet/Canvey towards Southend? Presumably the changes to the 27 mean they’ll have to either change in Hadleigh onto the 28, or take the much less frequent and much longer route 21? Likewise people from Hullbridge travelling towards Southend will have to change in Rayleigh onto the 25 or X30? Will there be other changes that haven’t been mentioned here? Seems like some very odd and negative changes on the face of it…

How come the X30 doesn't service Southend Airport? According to bustimes.org , only the 23, 23A serve it now?

Is there an an update on the saga with the Sandon P&R in Chelmsford ?
Has Central Connect pulled out yet ?
I was in Chelmsford briefly yesterday.

A black single decker with “P&R” on the display passed me on the Parkway - followed shortly after by a double decker also in black with P&R on it.

So I guess it’s not resolved.

I’m not local at all so others will know more.

The X30 has had a split routing in the Southend area since it was doubled in frequency along the whole route. 1bph via Southend Hospital and 1bph via Southend Airport.

This has changed recently to route via Southend Hospital at all times.

As for why it changed. Only First know the real reason. But I believe Stansted Airport provide funding to the X30, not Southend Airport. Also compare the different levels of flight provision at both airports.

My main gripe with the X30 is how non express it is nowadays. It was a fantastic truly limited stop service with coaches back in 2009-2012 and I used it frequently back then for getting to uni.

KonnectBuses are going to be rebranded as Central Connect in yet another rebranding with the change to happen by the summer.

When so many other elements of this company are in desperate need of funding, it's good to see they have their priorities right.

I think most patrons would prefer they actually spent money on paying their staff more so they can recruit and retain more staff and focus on the internal condition of their fleet, many of which even on the first journey of the day look like the need a deep clean.

Can't afford/don't have the decency to arrange ticket acceptance between Simonds and Konect for the past 6 months, or between Hedingham and Central Connect, but somehow a full rebrand of Konect and KonectBuses is well within their capabilities.

Never fails to amaze me how it's always the basics that Transport Made Simple seem to get wrong. The lowest hanging of fruits, and they just stroll past it. We all slate First and how they do things, but quickly after buying both Ensign and AirDecker, there was ticket acceptances in place because the network supplement each other. Yet the easiest of tasks to arrange ticket acceptance with their sister companies, is deemed too difficult for TMS. I don't know how they manage it but almost every single thing they do, they make a hash of and do in the least passenger friendly was possible.

With First and Air Decker, the Air Decker runs over much of existing First routes so it does make sense (and in fact, I seem to recall that there was interavailability at some point in the past, brokered by the council).

I'm not certain there's much overlap between the old Simonds business and the Konect business in Norfolk, and is there any overlap between the former Hedingham business and CC is fairly minimal save perhaps between Sudbury and Braintree with old Flagfinders 60?

I don't use them at all, so can't comment on the rights of the wrongs of the meat of these comments, but it is quite possible there was a clause in the purchase agreement(s) that require a rebrand within a specified period after sale (as happened, e.g., with WH Smith/TG Jones). Without the very unlikely event that either of you have sight of those agreements, it may perhaps be best not to link the two issues together, or accept it has to happen regardless.

If that is the case, then that is fair enough for the rebrand. For the record, I am generally indifferent on it, there are pros and cons. What I do find it amazing how they can't handle basic ticket acceptance between their own companies. And has been so slow at sorting out routes that they have spent months competing with..... themselves! First managed it with their purchases of Ensign and AirDecker very quickly and yet TMS, have done nothing but drag their heels on it.

In Norwich some of Konect's knackered double decker's seem to have been repalced by equally kanckered single decker's. New timetables with reduced service have also been introduced.

The name and reputation is so tarnished from the independent days a rebrand is probably needed along with new buses and more drivers and cleaners....

I don't commute regularly anymore luckily but First seem to be excellent when I have occasion to use them. Such a reversal of fortunes!

Had my monthly visit to Clacton On Sea today, other than a couple of E400s painted into a Konnect Buses blue livery, it's still very much same old with very little to suggest Konnect Buses have taken over from Go Ahead, infact, I saw a couple of drivers still wearing Go Ahead branded polo shirts!

Fleet wise, are any cascades due for Clacton as 20 year old ex-London B7TL's can't have much life left in them?

It certainly puts my moaning about Arriva Midlands into perspective.

The problem for the new owners is that the former Go Ahead East Anglia operation loses money. Worse still, it drains cash. Until operations can be rationalised, or tenders re-bid at higher prices, they will have very little scope for spending money on anything substantial, and certainly not new buses. That is why Go Ahead sold, and fundamentally little has changed with the new owners. There will be a saving on Group Recharges, but that has probably been offset by increased insurance and other items. It will be interesting to see how TMS untangle this mess over the coming months.

Following on from the south Essex changes mentioned previous. Additional detail is provided by Travel Essex forthcoming service changes.

What staggers me most is Arriva introducing a new limited stop route between Southend and Canvey to replace the loss of the 27.

If Arriva can launch with newer vehicles and marketing, this is a revived and fighting Arriva in the Southend area.

Good to see Arriva start to fight for their territory; it’s definitely a change of direction from them.

The 1X - 2X appear to be Southends version of Brighton & Hoves express routes. I did wonder how long it would be before other operators attempt to try similar ideas to speed up journey times at the busiest stops on core corridors.

A bit like TfL's Superloop (or Green Line of old!)

As you said before but as I said, how much of an issue is this? The First/RATP issue was more clear cut as there was a single route (A4) that duplicated First's existing routes over a sizeable part of its length. Aside from some lightly loaded stuff between Braintree and Sudbury, is there much overlap?

Absolutely this. Go Ahead had clearly lost any real direction on their East Anglian adventure. I've visited both Norfolk (Konect) and Essex/Suffolk (Hedingham/Chambers) over recent years and the operations were the poorest in the empire IME. In Norfolk, the workhorses were the 2015 e400s but everything else felt like a blast from the past. That was still better than the Essex ops where it was a mix of identities, and after getting a slew of ex London stuff that was pre-enjoyed, they'd moved onto some hammered ex Brighton Scanias still in Brighton colours. I think I'm right in that under Go Ahead, there hadn't been one new vehicle into the former Hedingham ops, and it showed!

In comparison, First look much better. In Norfolk, they have incrementally fought back to reduce the Konect business (with Anglian being closed down completely) and the fleet investment has been very impressive. That said, I do wonder if First are perhaps losing a bit of their local vigour with the recent Excel reductions? In Essex, First are also much better but it is a low bar TBH.

You do wonder where the value is. They have the Clacton ops which are not a gold mine - running buses for pensioners in one of the more deprived parts of SE England isn't a moneyspinner; certainly, rationalising the various TMS operations there and reducing overheads will help and you do wonder if the apparent lack of change (to the outsider) is because they are sorting out all manner of issues in the background.

It is a very interesting move and perhaps a miss-step from First. We shall watch with interest :D

A sign of forthcoming investment is that planning permission has been granted for a massive upgrade of the facilities at the Flagfinders depot/ outstation (originally the Florida depot) at Halstead. It is rumoured that the Hedingham depot at Sible Hedingham may be closing, presumably as a consequence of this.
A planning application has now been made to demolish the Hedingham Garage and build 7 houses on the site. The application can be viewed on the Braintree Council planning portal https://publicaccess.braintree.gov....s.do?activeTab=documents&keyVal=TDMLIHBFHE100

First also butchered the 71/x71/371 and 372 about a month ago

hardly any 71s left which went via tollgate center in Stanway all go via Sainsburys and all 372 school buses gone
371 is now a stupid every 35 mins and don't go under Chelmsford railway bridge as double decker's
x71 very rare now and no buses go via boreham church anymore

Out of Eastern Counties and Essex it does seem the latter is still the one with constant tinkering and changes. Despite attempting to simplify things they do appear to have taken a step backwards recently - especially with their timetables and frequencies.

If Arriva can get their act together we could start to see them attempting to cherry pick a few areas to branch out and bolt onto their core networks (such as the incoming 1X).

Are these changes going to have a dramatic effect on the PVR at Hadleigh? I think the 20 / 27 has 20 odd vehicles allocated to it at peak times (mostly deckers). The cynic in me wonders if they can't get deckers to replace the LJ59 E400's thus this is the result - I assume the 28 can't have deckers as it seems to be StreetLites only?

I wonder if this is because the 371 is now solely operated by Colchester (previously 3 vehicles each from Chelmsford and Colchester). Interestingly the new 375 is solely Colchester operated as well so plenty of dead running!

The X10 (apart from peak extras) seems to have transferred from Basildon to Chelmsford

Would anyone know if Jeff Morss’ Fareline service is still going? Taking a quick look on BusTimes, the last time T127OAH tracked was on 20th March.

Yes I believe this will see a reduction in depot PVR, although not as steep due to the increase in frequency on the 28. Speaking of which, the 28 has to be single deck due to a low bridge in Pitsea.

Interestingly had the Covid pandemic not occured, Hadleigh was due to get brand new double deckers rather than ex-Arriva London E400's it did get.

There has been a small moving around of routes lately in Essex. X10 (main service) has moved BN to CF - the Yutongs couldn't manage full days on the full X10, so to get BN to be a fully electric depot I guess it had to move. 71/371 series has moved from CF/CR to solely CR - upshot being the service is now double decked which the route needed.

Interesting that the Pitsea bridge on the old A13 is just 13’ 9”. I went that way with a Routemaster being delivered to Southend with no issues. A while ago though. ;)
