The Swanage Railway have announced their first visitor to this years Diesel Gala, and it’s a big bone of one!

We know many of you are excited for our upcoming Steam Gala and Model Railway Weekend - with all the fantastic announcements we’ve shared recently…but now it’s time to turn up the noise for May!

We’re thrilled to announce our first visiting locomotive for this year’s Diesel Gala & Beer Festival:

Class 58 No. 58023 “Leicester Depot” – appearing courtesy of Ed Stevenson!

A much-requested visitor, 58023 will make history as the first-ever Class 58 to visit the preserved Swanage Railway.

These distinctive locomotives were no strangers to the area, regularly working the northern section of our line during the 1990s and early 2000s, hauling gas trains to the Furzebrook terminal - including 58023 itself. However, this will be the first time a Class 58 has ventured south of Furzebrook.

This is set to be a truly special appearance - and there’s more to come…

Keep an eye out for further exciting announcements about our Diesel Gala very soon!

Kieran Fallows

That's an exciting first announcement!

Will be good to see a 58 in action as it's been a while since I last saw one working.

Peak and class 58 a good start, any news on the rumours of a class 93?
I'd like to see a Warship or blue class 25/26. I expect there will be a 50 from somewhere!
Will be going myself for the first time in several years looking forward to it.

45041 also announced.
Joining us is Class 45 45041 "Royal Tank Regiment" courtesy of the Peak Locomotive Company.
And also joining us will be either Class 37 37607 or 37610 courtesy of Swietelsky (subject to availability).
We are also pleased to announce that tickets for our 2026 Diesel Gala & Beer Festival are available now. Buy you tickets here: https://www.swanagerailway.co.uk/.../diesel-gala-and-beer...
As well as what is planned to be an exciting line up of home and visiting diesel locomotives, our popular Beer Festival will also be taking place at Corfe Castle Station with a great selection of local ales, cider and refreshments to enjoy.
And finally, we are also pleased to confirm that trains will be operating over the full length of our line between Swanage and "Bridge 4/River Frome" on all three days of the gala.
Look out for further exciting announcements about our Diesel Gala soon!

It's strange, 45041 was on the BLS Gen site as attending ages ago but the Swanage railway only just recognising it with the Facebook book announcement.

Carriages take 2nd place to locos on Galas.
So far no confirmation if the Swanage "3TC" will be ready for the gala to make a late "1960s" "1970s" train that used to run on the line, (one carriage still at Barrow Hill).
If not could be the repaired LU 4TC, or Bluebell's 4VEP, work push pull again if 33111 returns or a suitable 73 attends?

33111 won’t be back at Swanage until this autumn - unfortunately it’s taken longer than expected to do the rebuild work. I’ve inserted my post from another thread about the current position with the TC.
The 3TC will be completed this year, but I’m not sure if it will be ready for the diesel gala. The London end DTSO (76322) and TBSK (70824) only need some minor finishing work, and the Swanage end DTSO (76275) will return from Ramparts next month. The TFK (70855) is also under overhaul at Ramparts but will be a bit of a longer job. The full 4TC is currently targeted for 2027.
Edit: I’ve just realised I was replying to you in my quoted post! Sorry there hasn’t been much of an update recently, but I haven’t heard anything in the last couple of months about it. In my opinion I don’t think it will be ready in time.

So far no Branch line Jurassic Crompton railtour with the London Underground 4TC announced, last one was 2024.
As there won't be 33111 attending this year, means no local push pull trains during the gala (unless there could be a suitable 73?)

Depends on whether the 4TC is repaired in time anyway, needs new tyres or just needs turning?
I've heard a rumour a class 93 WILL attend but only speculation. Don't shoot the messager!

So is that the complete line up now, does anyone know if a Class 93 or indeed anything else coming? The website did say when the 37 was announced that more was to come? Getting a bit late now.
Same with Severn Valley, a bit light on visitors. Is the fuel crisis coming in to play? Will look at roster to see if that gives any clues!

26007 is the latest announcement! Now, can the 37 be swapped for 37703 for some Coal Sector power :D

Time for another Diesel Gala announcement!

Joining us for this year’s Diesel Gala & Beer Festival is Class 26 26007 courtesy of Victor Korzeniewicz.

Whilst 26007 has appeared at our gala before, this will be its first time wearing Railfreight “Coal Sector” livery.

We are also pleased to announce that the timetable for this year’s gala is now available to download here: https://www.swanagerailway.co.uk/uploads/diesel_gala_timetable_2026__1__.pdf

As you will see, our Diesel Gala trains will be operating over our full 10-mile line between Swanage and our boundary with Network Rail at “Bridge 4” over the River Frome near Wareham.

Further information and tickets are available here: https://www.swanagerailway.co.uk/events/view/diesel-gala-and-beer-festival-2026

Something a bit different this year too - on the Sunday of the gala the TC will be working over the road, so it means the air braked engines will get a chance to do the bank up from the river. The Corfe Shuttle will be run with a shortened B Set that day.

So the 58 only goes as far as Corfe on the Friday because reasons
That is as far as the air braked stock goes on Friday, and it doesn't look like any 'translation' is being done. Sunday is the day for a 58 north of Corfe Castle, but with the result that there are fewer air braked services overall.

Not at all desirable if you are just going to clear the line for the air braked locos, which to be honest is the main reason most people will be going for

The timings for all three days are the same, except the beer-ex.

On Friday and Saturday, sets A and B work the River trains and the TC is on the Corfe Shuttle.
On Sunday, set A and the TC are on the River trains and set B is on the Corfe Shuttle.

Air braked only engines can work only with the TC (unless they have a translator engine). The Corfe shuttle is hourly, so on Fri/Sat there are effectively two air braked single services per hour. The River sets each work a round trip every two hours, therefore there is one air braked single service per hour.

The service is exactly the same every day, just the air braked engines work on a different diagram. The re-distribution of rolling stock for Sunday has no impact on the overall service or its frequency.

So the air braked set could have been sent to norden on all days it's a choice that it doesn't that's what you're saying

The reason why the TC (and the 58) only goes to the River on the Sunday is because Sunday is the quieter day of the three main gala days, allowing a lower capacity set to run to the River.

It’s unfortunately the limitations of what we can achieve within our railway - effectively it’s a 6 mile line with a 4 mile siding to connect to the mainline. We don’t enough air braked stock ourselves to run more air braked services to the River, and we don’t have enough spare engines/crew/owners reps to run an extra engine as a translator.

Good, keep the boring 58 and the new age froth who are interested in it on the rubbish stock and leave the actual pres stuff that makes some noise on proper runs. No point sending it further than they need to score it and move on.

Well that depends on your view of doing the same stuff you've already done before on the line or something that has never been there before, the 26 and the peak has done galas or visited for a while before 20s have been there loads of times and as for the 73 and the 33 meh at best, the 37 I do agree with you on that's for the kids but having the 58 and the mystery machine not do the full length because you don't like it is very short sighted, the people who actually pay for the gala will be mainly drawn by the GB visitor and to say otherwise is just daft

The 58 is probably the star of the show for most people, being the only member of it's class that actually works! Your post seems to suggest that it's not a preserved locomotive, despite every other source saying that it is.

Strongly disagree on rubbish stock - love working the TC!

Every engine bar the 73 will do the full length of the line, but as I mentioned above it simply isn’t possible for them to all do this every day of the gala.
