The single unit, 730234, went north empty around 10 o'clock. From that do I assume they were a pair of units short somewhere. All diagrams ran whilst I was there (9.30 til 13.00) but most were late.

Probably a result of the cancellation of the 0601 Northampton - Crewe booked 2x730/2. 'Problem with the train crew'.

I spent a few hours at Nuneaton yesterday and noted that one diagram was still a pair of 350s. Another diagram consisted of a single 730/2 which had travelled north earlier in the day. All diagrams looked well patronised especially the single unit! Will all diagrams be going over to pairs of 730/2s with the new Timetable?

Single 730s do sometimes make an appearance on the Trent Valley as short forms, albeit infrequently, they do get rather cosy.

I think that solo 350x8 is remaining. It's very useful for training/pass out rides as it's pretty much the only UDS operation outside of the weekends (or additional strengthening like today on Liverpools)
what's the UDS operation thanks

Does the 350 have a regular diagram or does it drop onto any Trent Valley diagram?

Just to curious when the 730/0s on the London end will move back to the midlands as there’s more 730/2s coming in traffic

"And 37501 + 730230 is coming back on 5Q77"

730230 went to Gascoigne Wood Sidings on the 30th March 2026 (Post 3983).
This means it was there for a little over 2.5 Weeks.

Travelling on the 11.40 Northampton - New St service, formed of 2 x 730/2 the conductor announced that passengers for Long Buckby and Hampton-in-Arden should move to the front 4 coaches to alight 'because of short platforms'. I thought that all the stations between Northampton and New Street were at least long enough for 2 x 350s and I wonder why these two stations are exceptional. You would expect this restriction, if it applied to these two, to also apply to Canley > Berkswell for instance.

At least it keeps the '730 Project Management Team' in gainful employment. 2017 - 2026 & still things to sort :).

Interesting, the Platforms at Long Buckby are listed as 179/181 metres respectively, enough for 7 carriages of 730 or 8 carriages of 350.
Likewise Hampton-in-Arden is 185/181, longer than other stations such as Berkswell (both platforms 173 metres)

Further mystery that I travelled in the 5th coach. No auto announcements at L. Buckby; someone with 'dustbin' head phones (presumably hadn't heard the guard's repeated announcements) walked to a door and it released...

I'm almost certain I remember a guard explaining that this was due to an ASDO beacon fault at these stations resulting in it picking the number of vehicles that fit the shortest platform they normally serve at a few stations including these, which I guess would be Bushey on the down fast?

The one that irritates me that they need to fix is the length of the "Carriage N" field on the external displays. The field length was clearly set for it to say "Coach" and they changed it to "Carriage" so it scrolls, which looks really silly (and practically means that it's not displayed continuously when it could be). Strikes me as something like that would be a 2-second fix to chuck in when patching other stuff involving the PIS.

There is still multiple Cross City stations where the first or last doors don't open even though they are on the platform with room to spare, so I doubt the 730/2 issues will be ironed out any time soon.

Long Buckby should open 6 coaches on 730s.
Not sure on the other stations after Rugby.

We do have to UDS to 4 cars on the 12 car 350 due to the platform curvature preventing opening from cab 5 (front of rear unit).

Interesting. That's not how ASDO is programmed.

If ASDO fails, it would revert to the shortest length for that station. And if GPS also fails then it would be local door only operation.

Which is what has happened at MKC platform 5 on numerous occasions.

5Q77 from Gascoigne Wood to Bletchley today is reported as 37501 + 730236.
730236 has not yet been in passenger service.

Also 730218 returned to Bletchley last Saturday (25/4/26) on 5Q78.
