Not sure about how it was affected by the Lincoln services, but there are normally 2-3 return workings on the line worked by Pacers. Manjority are Sprinters, but I've never heard of the line being 100% Sprinters before.

That's what I thought. It says about 10 years ago so is suggesting in ATN's time in operating the franchise.

They obviously don't realise that some lines that were mainly 150s in the 1990s now see regular Pacer traction.

In the past 2-3 years I've been on a few times where it has been a 142 or 144. More recently it seems 15xs have been turning up but could just be pure chance. Also the last time I was in Leeds to see the evening Leeds - Sheffield via Huddersfield train, that was a 142.

Unless Pacers are banned e.g. Hazel Grove to Buxton, Blackburn to Clitheroe and Macclesfield to Stoke or if clearance has been applied for e.g. Chesterfield to Nottingham.

They've applied for Pacer clearance to Nottingham? That's news to me.

Back in 2004 when I was a regular user of the Penistone line it was always a 142 or a 144 when I caught it. Once had a 158, but that was back in 1999.

I mistyped. My post should read:

Unless Pacers are banned e.g. Hazel Grove to Buxton, Blackburn to Clitheroe and Macclesfield to Stoke or if clearance hasn't been applied for e.g. Chesterfield to Nottingham.

Although, they probably should get Pacer clearance for Chesterfield-Nottingham. OK no-one wants a Pacer running Leeds-Nottingham but which would they rather have in an emergency:
* A 144 or a cancelled service?
* A single 153 on a busy service or a 3 car 144?

I would quite like a 144 (and dare I say it a 142) to Nottingham occasionally. I wasn't going to say it for fear of being lynched.

Don't worry - there are others who feel the same ;)

Purely for operational reasons it would be sensible to have 142s able to get to Nottingham, but guess Northern think that they don't need to at the minute.

Or XC to Sheffield and change there?

The Penistone line usually does tend to have a sat a 158 sat in the bay when I have seen it. I have also seen the Leeds-Sheffield be a 142 when I was waiting at Huddersfield for a train a few weeks back

Are you sure that's the Penistone line unit that's the 158 and not one of the Sheffield-Leeds services?

I thought Northern did have a 158 diagram which went on the Penistone line at peak times but it was replaced by a 3 car 144 due to some minor clearance issues with 158s in the Penistone area.

Not everyone would be going between Leeds and Nottingham.

Many of the XC services between Leeds and Sheffield and the EMT services between Sheffield and Nottingham are already packed without there being a cancelled train.

Penistone line = Huddersfield-Sheffield doesn't it? Sure I've seen one in there, unless I'm getting confused, in the bay, platform 2

I don't use the line regularly, but I was on a 158 on the Penistone line on a Saturday a couple of months ago. Seemed to be a mixture of Sprinters and Pacers then.

Yes Penistone line is Huddersfield-Honley-Penistone-Barnsley-Meadowhall-Sheffield. Other Northern services run between Barnsley and Sheffield.

Platform 2 at Huddersfield is usually where the Sheffield services depart from. When you say you've seen a 158 in there, how recently?

I'm just reporting what I've heard from Northern staff which is then when stopping at Penistone station a 158 has to stop in a very specific place and if it goes too far it needs to reverse and then go forward again to continue and for that reason 158s on the line were replaced by 144s a couple of years back. That doesn't mean a 158 won't appear there in an emergency but for usual traction it shouldn't unless things have changed again since.

1 car 158s are popping up quite regularly - would have been on one on Saturday just gone but it failed at Huddersfield. Might be a problem with the 3 car sets?

Hopefully you mean a 2 car 158
I will verify a 15890x series worked the 1713 Penistone Line (Hudd - Sheff) on the 23rd as I was waiting for a friend off the 1643 ex Leeds.

you can get a 142 a 144 a 150 or a 158. I live in chapeltown near the railway line so i can very reliably inform you of this.

Recently it has had a regular 158 on the line with 150s and 144s sharing the rest of the work on the sheffield to leeds/huddersfield stoppers via barnsley. 142s have become rarer on that line over the last few months but there is usually 1 or 2 about.

*bump*

I have been on the Penistone Line for the first time today and got (I think I was rather lucky) a 158! The service was the 1242 from Meadowhall (something like 1236 ex SHF) and it was 158795.

What is certain, is that 2 car services are the maximum length for that line as far as I can see.

There was also a 144 in the platform when I passed through Huddersfield again later this evening

Two car sprinters but a 3 car pacer (144) does make it up there regularly. While id say you were lucky to get the 158 i have had one many times on hudderfield line they seem at least daily on there nowT

May be wrong but I thought I read at the time at least one working is booked as a 158, which then departs Sheffield on a peak time service later on in the day.

Yes, the 0810/1110/1410/1710 ex Huddersfield are booked 158.

I picked a good service then I think :D

It would have been the 1410 ex Huddersfield on the return I think.

Oh and yeah, I think you are right YorkshireBear, the 144 I saw there was may have been a 3 car.

Aside from the Huddersfield bay not taking much more, I don't think some of the stations will either.

Isn't there a slight clearance issue with 158s stopping at Penistone station, whereby if it's stops in the wrong place it gets stuck?

That is true I believe but not clearance, just stopping position. My friend regularly drives the route and got stuck in the bend at Penistone with a 158 on a wet autumn day. The unit was going nowhere so the service was cancelled and had to await the following service to couple up and give it a push (an yes it coupled on that bend!!). He has always told me the main problem with 158s on there is timekeeping. With the close proximity of stations and slow doors apparently you can lose a lot of time and struggle to claw it back
