I need to get from Mile End to Shalford, and I don't happen to have a train ticket already. I believe I can take underground to Whitechapel, then overground to Clapham Junction (avoiding zone 1) and then take a train to Guildford. The question is: what should I do at Clapham Junction changing from overground to Southern? I use Oyster within London. Do I need to exit at Clapham Junction and re-enter? Or is there another way to terminate my Oyster journey?

If you want to use Oyster for the London portion of your journey, you will either need to tap out at one of the gatelines at Clapham Junction (CLJ) and then re-enter with your onward ticket, or you will need to tap out at the yellow reader at platform 17.

There are pink readers near the Overground platforms at CLJ, but these cannot be used to end a journey. They are intended to be touched if you are changing and continuing your journey using Oyster/contactless, to show you avoided Zone 1. In reality they can be used to start a journey, but that is not an advertised feature and it doesn't work to finish a journey.

If you're getting to Shalford via Guildford then you'll likely be departing CLJ from platform 9 (or 11 if it's a semifast or stopper). If you're going via Redhill on the Reigate service then it'll be from platform 13 (or occasionally 15). So it's a bit more convenient to use the platform 17 yellow reader in the latter case.

There ought to be more yellow readers at clapham really. A few distributed along the overbridge. Must be pretty common for people to want to switch between contactless & NR there, and it's a long walk to the gateline from most platforms.

For the OP, if you're arriving at platform 2 the nearest gateline is actually not too far away, it's the one on the north end of the underpass rather than the main one at the south end. Go down the stairs from platform 2 and you'll see it.

Short faring is already a well documented issue at Waterloo - just look at the number of D&P threads we get with people thinking they'll get away with buying Vauxhall to Waterloo tickets.

Adding yellow readers to the overbridge at CLJ would only make things easier for people thus inclined, so I can understand why the TOCs don't want to do that.

If going via Redhill, tap out on readers on platform 3 (Redhill is in the oyster zones) and paper ticket the GWR train to shalford from there

Agreed there, having more yellow readers on the 'paid side' will make it easier for those who think correct payment is optional to arrive at Clapham using oyster, touch out then jump onto a longer distance service in the hope the guard doesn't get to them by the time they alight, especially if heading to an unbarriered station or travelling late when the barriers at their destination will be opened.

Just look at the number of fare dodgers Thameslink catch out using the Farringdon or Greater Anglia at Stratford, it's like shooting fish in a barrel

Thank you everybody. Just to make sure, if I travel in the opposite direction, can I change from national rail tickets to Oyster by tapping the pink reader?

No, the pink reader doesn't start or end a journey. It just informs the system you've avoided zone 1 for oyster fare calculation.

Edit: Watersheds post indicates I may be wrong(!), however this isn't the intended use of them

A pink validator can be used to start a journey, but it cannot be used to finish one.
