Hello all, hope you are all well. I am struggling to understand greater anglia’s off peak times, I am due to travel on the 09:17 greater Anglia to Norwich from Great Yarmouth and have a 16-25 railcard. In total my journey will be around £17 and I know this exceeds the minimum £12 spend cap. But I am struggling to understand when off peak starts for that specific route as I really do not want a penalty fare.

All the best!

@shuntrr. Welcome to the forum. When are you travelling? If it's today (Saturday), then Off Peak day returns (if that's what you've got) are valid all day, and there's no minimum fare on your journey if from Great Yarmouth to / from Norwich. Be slightly different if you've got an Off Peak return, also valid to return on another day.

Also, there is no such thing as “off peak time” for a route, the definition comes from the ticket you hold and its restriction code. Of course, many similar tickets may have similar restrictions, but there’s often an exception.

If you tell us precisely which ticket you hold, we can advise on its restrictions.

The Off Peak Day Return and Off Peak Return from Great Yarmouth to Norwich are both valid at any time from 08:45 on Monday to Friday. Regarding the fare and discount, if you are using the Off Peak Return and travelling before 10:00 the fare will be discounted to £12.00.

The forum site will show you when it's valid.

If you only want to see through returns and just select the outward portion, you can use the 'open return' option.

With the benefit of this extra information we can tell you that the ticket is "VALID AFTER 0844 MON-FRI" and the railcard minimum fare is noy going to come into play.

Awesome, that is much better then anticipated, follow up question regarding the return, I am set to depart Cambridge at 19:24 to Norwich then to Yarmouth, as I know my Norwich to Yarmouth leg is valid but will my Cambridge to Norwich leg be valid work my ticket type? I’ve added it onto the forum ticket thing and it’s coming up with code B4

The restriction is the same in both directions, not valid until after 08:44, so no problems with the return journey.

I really do not want a penalty fare.
Yarmouth is not a penalty fare station, and the train between GYM and NRW is a pay-train, meaning you can buy on board from the conductor. Norfolk doesn't have revenue protection on trains, and conductors cannot do more than sell a ticket.

On top of this, travelling at the wrong time with an off-peak ticket cannot result in a penalty fare as it is not a valid reason for one, though it could result in a witness statement if they suspect you do it on purpose.

If you are travelling today, use an off-peak as it's valid all day on weekends!

So just one final check I’m good to go? (Obviously providing I show my ticket when required and have my railcard ready.)

Yes. Good to go! And there's no real need to buy ahead of the day of travel, in case your travel plans change between now + Friday.

You can look up restriction codes, for example https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ticket-types/validity/b4/

Ironically an 08:44 Great Yarmouth-Norwich (SX) starts running with the timetable change this month.

Slightly inaccurate as revenue do appear on Norwich to Liverpool St. trips but obviously this doesn't affect the op.

Technically correct but there isn't a revenue depot in Norwich anymore and the focus is towards London and other penalty stations. There is sometimes an RPI situated at the barriers (and the ones who do Norwich are very strict) but it won't be an issue unless travelling from Diss, Stowmarket, or other penalty stations (GEML + Cambridge for Norwich services).
