What could an “ideal” Bristol service recast look like?

Except there’s a considerable amount of cross Bristol traffic on the existing Weston to Severn Beach service.
I think the core section from Parson St to Filton is well suited to a 4ph service at 15min intervals. 2ph from Weston + 2ph from Portishead, either all continuing to Henbury or maybe 2ph Henbury, 2ph Yate.

That is do-able but needs high reliability and careful pathing, so isn't suited to routes which add extra constraints (i.e. the Severn Beach branch)

Much better to run a standalone 2ph to Severn Beach IMO, with easy connections available at Stapleton Rd.

It's doable if you have Bedminster-Stapleton Road at a higher frequency that connecting into the Severn beach line isn't a problem. However, I'd caution against breaking the Bedminster-Clifton Down direct connection too lightly and also note that platform 1 is probably better used by the proposed local train from Cardiff.

That's exactly what we should be aiming for on suburban networks IMO. High frequency, designed for reliability, and not worrying too mucnh about preserving every direct connection.

Focusing on 1 direct connection (Bedminster-Clifton Down) is not the same as 'everywhere to everywhere' proposals.
Clifton Down is a reasonably significant journey destination in its own right, as its more convenient for a lot of the university, Whiteladies road, and Clifton village than Temple Meads.
I certainly wouldn't advocate Clifton Down being served by regional trains though. Only metro.

My crackpot contribution would be to have the 2 cross Bristol "metro" services (Avonmouth to Weston and Portishead to Henbury) running 3 per hour, to give 10 minute intervals on the central section. The Avonmouth and Portishead ones get out of the way pretty quickly so hopefully won't get in the way of whatever needs to follow, but with 4 tracking between Ashton Gate and Filton the other pair should be able to provide capacity for trains to Parkway and Taunton. Ideally the Bath route would operate separately as far as possible.

It'd need some extra infrastructure, such as a loop on the Avonmouth and Portishead branches, and the actual 4 tracking south of temple meads, but hopefully it wouldn't use all the fruit of the magic money tree.

2tph Bristol-Oxford is a big uplift on 2tpw! I don't think the demand is there yet, but if one is more of a local service to Bath (or originates somewhere) - and the other is a fast shuttle per the plan today, it might work. Needs more stations opened really like Corsham
So -Oxfords call at Corsham and Melksham gets a Bristol - Chippenham (or Swindon if space permits) stopper in addition to the Trans Wilts.
Somebody must have been listening, (or they have money to burn), regarding reopening Corsham, as new business case being done.

Following discussions between Wiltshire Council, GWR and Network Rail, AtkinsRealis has been commissioned to update the business case for Corsham’s proposed new railway station. This work will be completed by the end of November 2026.

The work will focus on updating existing evidence and improving the business case rather than redesigning the scheme. It includes:

Costs and Financial Assessment
  • A full update of the station’s capital cost estimates will be undertaken, using the same station design and scope that formed the basis of the 2022 submission.
  • Operational cost assumptions will be reviewed using comparisons with similar stations, including consideration of different staffing models and day-to-day operating costs.
  • The economic case will be strengthened through clearer benchmarking against comparable stations, particularly in relation to passenger demand and wider travel impacts. No new demand modelling is proposed.
Wider Benefits Assessment
  • The SOC will include an enhanced qualitative assessment of the station’s environmental and social benefits, identifying likely positive outcomes and areas for future detailed appraisal.
  • A more detailed assessment of wider economic benefits will be undertaken, considering potential impacts on investment, productivity and employment, with comparisons to similar schemes where relevant.
Timetable and Operational Feasibility
  • Additional consideration will be given to operational risks on the rail corridor and the implications of introducing a Corsham stop within an increasingly constrained timetable.
  • AtkinsRéalis will meet with Network Rail and GWR to discuss these risks.
  • Existing timetable analysis will be reviewed in light of current timetables and more recent studies, with any significant changes to previous conclusions recorded. No detailed timetable modelling is planned.
Funding and Development Support
  • The case will be updated to reflect discussions led by Wiltshire Council with potential third-party funders and clarify how external contributions could support delivery and operation of the station.
  • Further engagement with planning officers, developers and local stakeholders will be documented to demonstrate alignment with housing growth, regeneration and wider development objectives.
Stakeholder Support
  • The business case will be strengthened by incorporating evidence of support from key stakeholders, including relevant correspondence and endorsements.
Integration with Other Transport Modes
  • Greater emphasis will be placed on how the proposed station would connect with wider transport networks, including bus services, walking and cycling routes and links to surrounding communities.
Business Case and Carbon Updates
  • The case will be updated to reflect current Department for Transport business case guidance and policy requirements.
  • A high-level assessment of carbon impacts will be undertaken, alongside preparation of an outline Carbon Management Plan appropriate to this stage of development.
Overall, the work is designed to refresh and strengthen the existing Strategic Outline Case, improve its alignment with current guidance, provide up-to-date cost information, demonstrate wider benefits and reinforce the strategic and financial case for progressing the Corsham Station project to the next stage of development.
