When you talk about how we got petrol coupons and never used them because we voluntarily restricted our driving and, mostly, kept to a 50mph limt. From reactions the possibilty of such widespread voluntary compliance today is not too hopeful! A lot has changed in the last 50 years.

When you hear that the number of uninsured cars are seized by the police in one year is 160,000 you realise you might be in a minority. Or at least very likely to be the only one with insurance if you have a coming together.

How true, lot of things law abiding citizens pay for that some others don’t….public transport tickets, supermarket items, clothing etc

It wasn't voluntary if you are talking about 1973-4.
from which
A 50 mph speed limit on all roads was introduced during the fuel crisis in 1973 as a temporary measure to reduce fuel consumption. The speed limit was restored to 70 mph on motorways in March 1974 and to all purpose roads in May 1974.

In December 1974 speed limits of 60 mph and 50 mph were introduced on dual carriageway and single carriageway roads, respectively. In June 1977 these were increased to 70 mph and 60 mph respectively, and have remained so since.

I still look back on the 1970s fuel crisis and remember the lower speed did not cost much time. Our example was Medway to & from Birmingham. Most of the time seemed to be spent struggling through London to the bottom of the M1. My mother reckoned it saved enough petrol to avoid a pit stop. There was no M25 in those days although I think there was a bit of dual carriageway around South Mimms crossing the A1 that bit became part of the M25. We used to stop at White Webbs park for a rest if going round London. That was via the Dartford tunnel of course - which might still have been the one single bi-derectonal bore then. I can remember the toll being 12 1/2 p (new pence) because it had been 2/6 (two shillings and six pence) before February 1971 - them were the days.

Being very annoyed that the hospital appointments department of a certain NHS Trust who have it in my database that I am now 81 years of age and the last time that I drove was in 2012, two years after my retiremenr, give a Friday 0945 appointment to see a consultant which sees me needing to take no less than four buses and a cross city-centre tram to attend. Their so-called deliberations say I am underqualified to use the services of their elderly patient transport requirements.
I once received an appointment notice at my local hospital for 07.00 on a Sunday morning - with an exhortation to use public transport!

When you are the oldest patient on Ward A9 (Elderly Medicine) at Wythenshawe Hospital and the others range from 77 to 79 years of age.
When you cheerfully go into hospital for what you think is a routine ECG and get kept in overnight for observation alongside others who'd all been emergency admissions by ambulance, all younger than oneself.

When you're doing something on a computer that takes a short while - downloading a large file or scanning an image - and you take the opportunity to shut your eyes and have a brief relax until it's done!

Download a file and it takes seconds rather than hours. Napster was tedious.

It makes me feel old when...

Members of this forum were not born or too young too remember when BR operated the train services.
(Hoping GBR will operate a similar unified rail system similar to BR days)

Ahh the days of Limewire, which was definitely only installed to download Linux ISOs.

Limewire was one of those programs that I often removed because people complained that their computers weren't performing as well as they should be.

It probably wasn't the sole culprit but, combined with the multitude of other programs that were determined to run at startup, certainly contributed to the slow-running of many a late 90s/early 2000s computer. My dad was one such individual, despite his technical background, who refused to acknowledge that the amount of crap he'd installed on his computer (ICQ, Yahoo, MSN and various other chat apps) was responsible for the machine grinding to a halt.

When you hear news like today that HS2 may not now be open before 2040 and that now I could very well not still be around to ride on it. I always knew that I would be well into my 70’s before it opened but it really does make me feel old when I begin to realise that it may not open within my lifetime.

I’m 43 next month and I don’t think HS2 will be opened within my lifetime!
I'm about 10 years younger but I also don't think a meaningful HS2 implementation will happen in my working lifetime. It'll be Old Oak Common to Birmingham at about 15% lower speed, for double the original budget and not open for another 15 years.

I think you've still got a decent chance

Oxford to Bedford ... not so good

Oxford to Cambridge ... you'll probably need to be rivalling David Attenborough

You go to bed and doze off or sleep a bit; when you wake up you feel as though you have been asleep half the night and it must be nearly dawn, although you don’t feel refreshed: you look at the clock and it is only just after midnight.

With me, the time of 02:00 is fast becoming the time when I awake, so I log on. I have never made so many postings at that time in the past on the Quizzes and Games forum.

In my neck of the woods, the normal practice when boarding local city buses is that the driver will wait until you're in a seat before pulling away when it's an elderly person (potentially unsteady on their feet), a parent with youngsters etc.

If it's only younger, more able-bodied passengers who have boarded, they may wait, or might pull away before everyone is seated, on the assumption they're quite capable of looking after themselves.

I do have a diminishing supply of grey hair, but I've always thought myself a quite sprightly geezer, and have been used to the bus drivers mostly starting off before I get into my seat.

In recent months, however, I've noticed the drivers all seem to wait for me to get to my seat and 'properly settled' before they pull away. I wonder what subtle change there's been?
