Please send a screenshot with this popup. We will struggle to advise with the limited detail provided so far.

Search for snipping tool in your computer’s start menu, then copy to clipboard once you have taken the screenshot. You can then paste the image from the clipboard into RailForums

I have already said that I don't know what a screenshot is and how to access one.

At the age of 81, I find just the use of Microsoft Word and Excel (for financial spreadsheets) and the ability to make postings upon this website enough to meet my needs.

I have given basic (as in not detailed) instructions on how to take a screenshot. You can use the internet if you need a more detailed guide. Without more information I am simply unable to help you.

However, this seems like an issue that can probably be ignored

I do have three of the Norton product range, which were already installed in the HP Pavilion desktop computer when it was presented to me eighteen months ago:-
Norton 360 Deluxe
Norton Utilities Ultimate
Norton Driver Updater

Thanks for your kind offer of assistance. Since these pop-ups began to appear, I have had no problem with using the computer.....could they be a type of scam?

Assuming you're using windows, press the windows key, shift and the S key all at the same time. The screen will dim and the cursor will become a cross. Use the cursor to draw a box around the offending message, then come back to the Forum, left click in the reply box (as if you were going to type) and press Ctrl+V both at the same time and that will paste the image into the message.

Almost certainly but can't be certain without seeing it.

Much better instructions. I usually use Fn + PRT Sc so wasn’t sure of the easiest way if your keyboard doesn’t have those buttons.

I don’t think these are directly related to the problem you are having, but these are what I would classify as “bloatware”. This is unnecessary software that has little benefit whilst slowing down your computer and extracting a subscription from the user.

Sounds to me like there is a driver issue with you display card (the bit that drives the screen image). Possibly an unwanted automatic update.
Without accessing the machine it's hard to know exactly the cause, but my first port of call would be the Norton Utilities and Driver Updater. They're both unwanted memory hogging junk and have no place on a modern PC. They had a use 25 years ago, not now
Once they're gone it's easier to work things out...

I concur.

As a rule, for an everyday user, any kind of bundled ”Utility” programs (other than anti-virus / anti-malware) are needless bloatware.

In the last few days, whilst posting on this website, a pop-up has appeared citing the above and mentioning memory. As an old timer of 81, I don't know what to do. Can anyone tell me what it refers to and what action to take, please. I use Windows with Microsoft Edge.
Please don't take this the wrong way as it is said with respect but, given your self-identified limited tech skills, this is the kind of thing that is likely impossible to diagnose via forum posts.

You'll need someone to look at the machine, either in person or by way of a remote access session.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help an old-fogey and I appreciate what was said. As suggested, I have this morning booked an appointment with a computer engineer to give evrything "a once-ever" in the HP Pavilion tower.

In reply to what was said in an earlier posting, the tower when purchased had all the three aforementioned Norton products already installed.

Even then for the overwhelming majority of users Microsoft Defender that's bundled with Windows should be more than sufficient. Been a while since a third-party anti-virus has been really important. I used to use Kaspersky for years and it was great but since I ditched it (maybe four years or so ago) I've been fine so far and the savings in not forking out for a licence most appreciated!*

*Those savings have now been eaten by having to have a VPN thanks to UK Government nonsense with the Online Safety Act but that's a story for another thread...

And they would be the first three things to get uninstalled by any decent computer tech....they're bloatware junk
As I have already stated, I am 81 years of age and computer illiterate. To see such a posting response to me has upset me immensely and made me feel ever so small. It brings back to mind the old adage..."There is no fool like an old fool"....

This website, one which you see that I have made countless postings upon since joining in 2011 is (besides Microsoft Excel for financial spreadsheets, Microsoft Word for sending emails) since the death of my late wife in 2021 from Vascular Dementia is basically the main reason for life these days.

Consider that I am now duly adminished.

The IT technican will sort it I'm sure. You did the right thing by booking the appointment. These kinds of things are best investigated in person. Just a question from me: Do you shut the computer down properly at the end of each day? My late father used to have a similar pop-up and it turned out to be because he was keeping the computer on for days and days at a time so it was running out of RAM.

I most certainly close down the computer at the end of each day.

Sorry, it wasn't intended to upset you and there was no intention of denigrating you.
The sad fact is that many computer manufacturers pre-load their products with unwanted unneeded software from which they get a kickback from the software companies. It's little more than a scam and a lot of people get taken in by it

Its good you are getting an engineer to deal with this as trying to diagnose this with the limited information is going to be near impossible. I work in IT and if someone came to me with an issue like this I wouldn't even begin to diagnose it via text chat, I'd be wanting the device in front of me and if that isn't possible I'd want to gain remote access to it.

That said Nvidia Backend is a service that runs in the background and can be resource intensive which may explain the message about memory. Since you don't play PC games there is no point in having it enabled. It may be as simple as disabling it. This won't take a competent IT engineer long to deal with. Hopefully they'll stop all the unnecessary services and startup apps you have running and uninstall any bloatware. There will almost certainly be some logs in Event Viewer which may help identify what happened to cause the popup if you are interested but root cause analysis in this instance won't be necessary, it will only help to solve your curiosity as to what happened.

IT engeneer only lives locally and said he was free this evening. He has done "all the necessary" and said that this is not the first time that has has had to attend to computer tower systems that had been purchased from the same place that mine came from.
Fingers-crossed that's everything solved. Thanks for the update.
