So my journey from Chelmsford to Bradford Forster Square on the 1540 LNER from KX was going ok until Leeds, then we sat around for about 20 mins and then they announced the train was now cancelled and we should use local trains to continue our journeys to Bradford.

I got the 1842 Northen train to Chester which gets to Bradford Intechange instead at 1900.

How would I do delay repay for this exactly ..? It was a super off peak single with PRIV discount so only £20.70 but it’s more the principle!

You don't put your arrival time, you just specify how late you were (which of the particular bands). If you walked past or close to Forster Square, you could base it on your time there. But it is a bit academic anyway, as they will likely work out how late they think you should have been, and pay you on that, regardless of what you claim.

Just be a bit careful in this case that they don't base their calculation on you catching a connecting train soon after you arrived at Leeds, rather than after you were told your train was going no further.

I managed to do it but it asked me for the 5 digit ticket number... I can see no such number on my ticket!

But it wouldn't let me carry on without so I just put the first 5 digits of the number at the bottom!

Yes 01424 is the five digit ticket number. Put 01424 on the form. The format is 01424 (ticket number) then 3773 (machine number) then 4278 (issuing location) then the last short codes are the window numbers and version numbers and the codes underneath are the time and date of issue.

Bradford is Bradford is Bradford. Despite regular trips to Bradford Interchange from Bramley or New Pudsey stations when buying online the Bradford station code defaults to BFS which is any Bradford station.

I see you arrived Leeds at 1802; it would have easily been possible to make the 1812 but if they didn't advise the train was cancelled until after that, you are entitled to claim for a delay of 30-59 mins, i.e. entitling you to £10.35

Note the system may automatically reject the claim so you may have to appeal, and it may be time-consuming.

If you were told 20 mins after arriving at Leeds, you should have made the 1827, but did you just miss it? The 1827 wouldn't qualify, unless you make the argument that you needed to be at Forster Square specifically, in which case I think you would have a legitimate claim, but it could be a time-consuming argument.

If you weren't told in time to make any earlier train than the 1842, then any argument over the walk to Forster Square is irrelevant because the delay would be 30-59 mins regardless of whether you took the 1842 (with or without including the walk) or took the 1843 direct.

More importantly if you were at the platform for so long that people couldn't even get the 1827, let alone the 1814, then that really is very poor that a lack of information was provided.

That looks like it'd need a time machine. 1812?

The booking sites I use allow me to select either (or Bradford stations - though not all places have availability of tickets to that).

They announced the cancellation just before 18:30 so no I don't believe I would have been able to get the 18:27 given the size of Leeds station and having to work out which platform to get to...

EDIT: they also told us to go to platform 8 when they announced the cancellation which did not seem to be the correct platform at all

The only train to use Platform 8 anywhere near yours was the terminating train from London after yours.
