I know this is a “Flights you have been ON” thread but …. Flights I have NOT been on today are Kuala Lumpur via Doha, Qatar to Manchester. Stuck because of the Middle East airspace situation. Currently trying to reroute and rebook.
Unfortunately for an incredible number of people, flights you have not been will be a theme for at least a couple of weeks. Even as flights gradually resume, the flow rate is vastly reduced and I would imagine the ME3 are focusing on sorting out point-to-point repatriations rather than connecting passengers for now, until the backlog is cleared or the flow rate increases.

Did you get home in the end?

I did thanks. Went on Saudia via Jeddah. Flight images and bookings attached in the photos. only 15 hours delayed which I was more than happy with (and so was my wife).

Flights you haven't been on could be a thread in its own right

I have lost flights due to the Icelandic volcano and covid.

I have missed flights due to cable theft, illness and abandoning plans.

The only flight I have not been on was Emirates Dubai to Manchester due to the Icelandic Volcano. My flight never actually boarded. The Heathrow that was 20 minutes earlier took off and then had to turn back. Got a week in Dubai with breakfast and dinner included. Ended up on a flight to Gatwick instead of Manchester (as a young male travelling alone, I was a long way down the pecking order for rebooking), but they gave me a free upgrade to Business and ultimately it was good to get back.

Would not want to have had to sort myself out with getting home. Saw so many in London that trip who were exhausted from their efforts to get home. Felt somewhat guilty being half drunk on Champagne.

Given this started with @GRALISTAIR talking about Kuala Lumpur, my trip was actually KL-Dubai-Manchester on the volcano day.

A promised in the A340-600 thread (see here), here is a quick review of my recent trip to New York specifically to travel on these planes.

In summary, my journey was Heathrow-Frankfurt-JFK last Friday, then JFK-Frankfurt-Birmingham overnight on Sunday/Monday, with Lufthansa. Obviously the A340s were on the FRA-JFK legs. Quite a reasonable trip overall.

~~
The first part of the trip is, of course, getting to the airport. An 0630 departure from LHR isn't particularly pleasant, but oh well! After work on Thursday, I left the office in Birmingham and travelled to Euston on Avanti. I then stayed the night in the Zedwell Capsule Hotel, which was quite interesting - I'm a fan of hotels like this, but this is the first British one I've stayed in - it was perfectly satisfactory for the price, I'd happily stay again.
Around 0300 Friday morning I caught the N9 night bus from right outside the hotel direct to Heathrow. This bus takes around 75 minutes, but is excellent value at the standard TfL £1.75 fare. It was surprisingly busy.
Upon arrival at Heathrow T2, I went straight through security, having checked in online - I was in the departures lounge within 5 minutes of walking in through the terminal door, which I thought was quite good. It was a similar experience to last time I was at T2 in October. The only downside was having about 2 hours to wait before my flight...

~~
Flight 1: LH921 0630 LHR-FRA 0905
This flight was not very full - I'd estimate around 20 people in business/premium and 30 in economy. I was expecting it to be a bit fuller, but oh well, it meant there was plenty of space! D-AINY, one of Lufthansa's A320neos, was the aircraft in use - it was perfectly pleasant, although I didn't find the seat backs very comfortable. Leg room was fine. I had an aisle seat near the back.
Shortly after boarding had finished, it was announced that we would be delayed due to fog at Frankfurt, estimated to be 35 minutes. However, clearly the fog forecast improved rapidly, because we took off at 0657. Arrival at Frankfurt was only a couple of minutes late - we arrived at a bus "gate", everyone easily fitted onto one bus. On the journey to the terminal we were nearly run over (slight exaggeration) by a 777 careering into its gate at speed.
On the walk through the terminal, I took the opportunity to register for the European entry system, so hopefully I won't have to do that again when I next enter Europe - we'll see... Connection at Frankfurt was fairly painless, I think I had to go through security again though.

~~
Flight 2: LH400 1100 FRA-JFK 1350
This flight is what the whole trip was about - the A340-600. In this case, D-AIHW. I had a window seat near the back (at the point where the middle seating reduces to 3 across). The seat was reasonable, legroom was fine, blanket and small cushion were provided. The flight was quite busy - business was over half full, and economy had only a couple of seats spare. There was a surprisingly large number of French-speaking passengers. One of the cabin crew announcements said that, between them, the crew spoke 14 different languages.
Take off did, as has been suggested in the other thread, seem to be quite slow, but obviously we go up in the air safely (at 1132). There was a good selection of in-flight entertainment, and the food (main meal and then snack shortly before landing) was reasonable. The downstairs toilets were an interesting feature.
Arrival at JFK was a few minutes late, landing at 1356, but I wasn't bothered as I had nothing planned. The JFK arrivals experience was reasonable, there wasn't much of a queue at the border, but I used the MPC app to skip the queue and was through in under 5 minutes. Notably, the border guard was the friendliest (if you can describe border guards as friendly!) I've come across on the 4 occasions I've travelled to the USA.

~~
I took the AirTrain to Jamaica, somewhat reluctantly because it costs nearly $8 but I didn't really fancy going straight into the cheapskate fare avoiding option of getting off at the long stay car park and walking. I then took the J line into Manhattan to check into the hostel I was staying at (the Nolita Express hostel - basically another pod hostel, but with "proper" rooms (just very small), and very good value for the location).
As mentioned, the only reason for this trip was to fly on an A340 - I had nothing planned for the 50 hours or so that I was in the city. I therefore had to come up with some things to do, bearing in mind that I was there in October and did a good selection of the "must see/do" touristy stuff then. One of my interests in theatre (well, the technical side of it) so I went to the discount theatre ticket booth in Time Square to see what was available. Somewhat unbelievably, there was literally no queue, so I went and bought some tickets. With a bit over an hour to go until that evening's show started, I ordered a pizza from an excellent Italian restaurant we found last time, which was ready to collect by the time I'd walked there. I then walked to the theatre, and got there as the doors were opening - excellent timing. After the show, I went back to the hostel and went straight to sleep, having been awake for over 25 hours by this point!
I had a Saturday matinee show ticket as well, but needed something to do in the morning, so I decided to go over some of the far reaches of the Subway network. Thus, I went up to the end of the D line then went for a wander round Van Cortlandt Park (which was rather snowy), then took the 1 line back into Manhattan in time for the show. I then went to the ticket booth again and bought yet another ticket for the evening, before going on another Subway exploration to Jamaica and back (out on the E line, then walk to the end of the F line then back in to the city) followed by the third and final theatre show of the trip.
Sunday was another day of Subway exploration - I've now done all 4 routes to Coney Island... Then over to Howard Beach on the A line to catch the AirTrain back to JFK - except this time I decided to be a cheapskate and do the walking option from Aqueduct station to Lefferts Boulevard, which was an interesting walk. Obviously, being me, I took the AirTrain in the wrong direction just so that I could tick off the line to Howard Beach stop before returning to the airport!

JFK T1 was quite pleasant, although if you stare intently at the ceiling in places through sheer boredom you'll see a few signs of it looking a bit tired... Anyway, I was through security within about 15 minutes, no need to remove liquids or shoes. Food on both sides of security was incredibly expensive - needless to say I didn't buy any... A standard size tube of Toblerone was $30 in one of the duty-free shops!!

~~
Flight 3: LH401 1540 JFK-FRA 0515
Another A340-600 flight, his time on D-AIHF (I was half expecting both flights to be operated by the same plane, given that there are only 5 of them in use, but fortunately that was not the case). Departure was late: there were strong headwinds apparently, so the inbound working was delayed. We left the gate at 1620, and take off was at 1641. Most of the flight I attempted to sleep so wasn't looking very often at the flight information, but at one point the screen said we were doing 1100km/h which I think is my speed record (strong headwinds becoming strong tailwinds on the return flight).
This flight was again fairly full, good level of occupancy in business, not so much in premium, a few spare seats in economy. I had an aisle seat near the front of the economy section this time. Once again, food and service were reasonable. Arrival was pretty much on time, landing at 0513 having made up most of the time lost.
The airport was quite dead at this time in the morning - transfer through to the non-Schengen part of the terminal was relatively simple, including going through security again. With just under 2 hours to kill, I found some semi-reclined seats near the Air Canada lounge.

~~
Flight 4: LH952 0730 FRA-BHX 0805
This flight was booked to be another A320neo, but in the event an A319 was used (D-AILN). Coincidentally, D-AINY which I'd been on from Heathrow was parked at the adjacent gate. The change in aircraft wasn't a problem thought - this was easily the emptiest flight I've ever been on. I had a row of 3 to myself. I thought the seats were slightly more comfortable than the A320. We left the gate a few minutes early, and landed at BHX just before 8. The UK entry process was fine, with no queues. There was, however, a queue for the people mover to the station, because one of the vehicles/tracks is undergoing maintenance. Nevertheless, from stepping off the plane to walking in through the door of my office in central Birmingham took less than 50 minutes. I will admit that I perhaps wasn't as productive that day than I normally am in the office...

~~
Anyway, overall I was happy with the flights. Lufthansa service was perfectly fine, all the airport experiences were reasonable, nothing went wrong. A successful trip!

Good result in the circs, though not quite up to QR's standards.

I had a colleague who was booked back from Singapore via Addis Ababa to Brussels as their flight on one of the ME3 was cancelled which is quite the detour and quite a layover in Addis.

The big question - did you use the downstairs loo on the -600?

My last A340-600 flight was Nairobi - Frankfurt 3 or 4 years ago - taking off from hot and high Nairobi was very much 'pay for the whole runway, use the whole runway'. I couldn't tell you much about the flight as I slept through the entire thing, but I do remember the downstairs loo.

I never knew about the downstairs toilets on the A340-600 what an interesting feature! Nice trip report.

I finally have my long awaited flight to innsbruck tommorow with Jet2. Forecast looks perfect for views of the mountains.

Flew Gatwick to Glasgow on Easyjet. First time flying from North Terminal in a while and easyjet, was BA last time. As I was checking in, lady in front was informed she was standby for the EDI flight as it was oversold. I guess if you check in late you are in firing line for being on standby.

Noticed the circular part of the South Terminal opposite the North terminal, never been to that part of the airport.

Do you think Easyjet LGW to NCL would work?

Nowhere near enough custom. Almost all those flying between London and Newcastle are connecting at Heathrow.
It’s the same reason BA abandoned LGW - Manchester.

easyJet did used to have a Stansted to Newcastle route, inhereted I think from Go Fly. Think there may have been Southend to Newcastle flights for a short whole too.

Of course given such flights don't still, well, fly, your point about not enough custom stands.

Is there an easy to search catalogue anywhere of former routes such as these? A quick web search wasn't particularly fruitful.

Yes, I recall the Stansted route.

I seem to recall Easyjet used to have Southend to Edinburgh, either it operated for a very short while or was axed before it actually started. I flew to Southend to from Glasgow for the day back in 2018 Flybe.

I thought there would be some demand for a flight to serve the area South of London from Newcastle, I guess the train wins.

Thameslink makes it much easier these days. I've just thrown Brighton to Newcastle into NRE and it offers a journey of 4 hours 25 minutes between city centres, including a 30 minute transfer at St Pancras => Kings Cross where you can pick up a coffee or a beer. You'd spend that much time in just one of the airports.

Also Newcastle and its hinterland are fairly small. For Leeds and York to the south the train will be even more competitive, and Edinburgh has its own airport to the north.

Yes, Newcastle to London Kings X is pretty fast.

From Glasgow/Edinburgh is far more even matched with the train. Even Birmingham to Central Belt, flying is just as quick.

BA's recent foray into Manchester - Gatwick was supposed to be in conjunction with moving the Islamabad flight to Gatwick from Heathrow, and I would imagine some spillover benefit on Caribbean flights.

Given that I don't think there's a proper connections process at Gatwick, this was perhaps less well thought through. The Manchester link either didn't start or didn't last long (can't remember). There's plenty of one stop options via the gulf that would have provided a much better experience than a re-check process at Gatwick.

Flew LSL939 on Sunday from Manchester to Innsbruck.

First time I have flown out of Manchester since June 2022 during the chaotic COVID recovery. Was smooth and plain sailing all the way through. Flight was uneventful and the landing at Innsbruck Incredibly scenic. Couldn't have asked for better weather.

No queue at the border either.

I don't recall that starting. The only domestic BA flight from LGW is to GLA, aka the Orlando Express.

I remember MAN, ABZ, NCL, GLA and EDI being served from LGW on 737s.

Another Jet2 trip. An almost 28 year old 737-300 from Leeds to Palma, same aircraft for both outward and return legs, both flights full and on time. It is still early season for Majorca, Leeds flights only started again a few weeks ago so Palma airport was quieter than expected.

Palma airport is having lots more work done, much of which I suspect is to be completed before main holiday season. The 'duty free' shop is very limited and lots of other outlets aren't yet open as it is early in the season. We were advised not to go to the gate area too early as it was vending machines and a small WHSmith only. To have this info before walking all the way to the departure gates would have helped!

The e-gates worked a treat as we had registered on the system in December. From landing, engines off, disembarking, taking the bus, egates and exiting the airport took 25 minutes. Not so smooth when leaving - it took 4 attempts to scan and accept my passport.

I'd also recommend Palma for an early or late season city break. Just enough to see and do to fill a couple of days.

I recently came back from Thailand.
Used China Southern via Guangzhou as it was dirt cheap - £390 return.
Was thankful for my decision when the Iran stuff kicked off.

Incidentally, China Southern upgraded my flight home from a 787-9 to a 777-300ER four days before the flight. That's an additional 85 economy seats, but still I counted only 2 empty seats.
Given the fares they were advertising, I am sure they are making a lot of money out of the issue. And having flown Chinese airlines in the off season, I've never been on a full flight even with their low fares and the flight out (pre-war) was about 2/3 to 3/4 full in economy.

China Southern was fine like all the other Chinese airlines. The seats were standard and there was inflight entertainment. English content was fairly limited though to Disney movies and a couple of Hollywood films. Interestingly though, they did have the Celebrity Traitors which I gladly rewatched. Food was fairly poor, as is standard for Chinese airlines, and they ran out of so much stuff on the way back. By the second meal service, they had no Coke, orange juice, wine, beer etc. On other airlines, they do sometimes run out of stuff, but never to that extent.

Guangzhou T2, like most Chinese airports nowadays, is actually fairly decent. Plus I always find Chinese airports to be very reasonably priced at shops. A 500ml bottle of Coke Zero was 43p according to my credit card app. A 1/4 of the price of Bangkok airport and 1/5 of Heathrow.

I know this is a “Flights you have been ON” thread but …. Flights I have NOT been on today are Kuala Lumpur via Doha, Qatar to Manchester. Stuck because of the Middle East airspace situation. Currently trying to reroute and rebook.

Best of luck!
Really not a good situation to be in.
Don't accept a refund and get the airline to rebook as a refund removes all your rights (obviously reduced under UK261 due to the war as an extraordinary circumstance, but still you have the right to be rerouted on another carrier at the airline's expense)

Given that I don't think there's a proper connections process at Gatwick, this was perhaps less well thought through. The Manchester link either didn't start or didn't last long (can't remember). There's plenty of one stop options via the gulf that would have provided a much better experience than a re-check process at Gatwick.
Always a downside of connections there.

Only Heathrow and Manchester in the UK have a proper airside connection system in the UK.
I'd also recommend Palma for an early or late season city break. Just enough to see and do to fill a couple of days.

Palma and Majorca in general is great in the early/ late season. Pleasant weather. Lots of pretty places to visit. Though a bit cold for sea swimming and sunbathing.
I'd say the same is true for most of Spain unless your plan is to roast yourself under the sun coming home like a lobster. early June - mid September are times I avoid.

What a day for it, i hope you had some nice views.
I have been to the IOM twice, both times i went on the manx electric up Snaefell, and saw nothing but clouds from the summit. Third time lucky at some point, hopefully.

Though that said, the airlines i used for my first trip, both went bust, so maybe i am not so lucky for them. Indeed, of my 4 sectors to/from IOM on 4 different airlines, only EasyJet still exist!

First flight for me was a Viscount Gatwick Schiphol in the 1980s vice an Air Antique DC3 that had burst. Happily, they mended the C47 for the return to Stansted. Flying over the North sea, with trawler men waving at us was surreal. I don't remember the Viscount, it was in a BEA livery(?), but the C47 was G-AMRA. Last I heard of it it was replacing the Dutch Dakota Associations machine that had been written off.

I flew Ryanair Eindhoven to Manchester today, my 96th Ryanair flight and 139th flight to/from Manchester.

It was an un-refurbished 737, on time, and full.

Passport control was very smooth exiting the Schengen area in Eindhoven. There are no e-gates at Eindhoven, just manual desks. Time at the desk was perhaps a bit longer than usual, 2-3 minutes perhaps for most (<60 seconds for me). Before the Manchester flight there were two other non-Schengen flights to Stansted and Marrakesh which also looked to be going smoothly as I passed on the way to the seating upstairs.

Flew into Eindhoven last year from Edinburgh. Nice to fly to somewhere other than AMS in the Netherlands. Did they stamp your passport?

Shame they don't fly from Edinburgh any more!
The route stopped end of Winter of timetable last year.

Few weeks ago I flew OSL - SVG - ABZ and had 3 hours between flights. I was going to go airside but there was a sign saying connecting passengers should remain airside. I would of thought it would of been ok if I went landside as I had a boarding pass?

You'd have been fine going landside. A lot of airport signage is just to prevent idiots from getting themselves into bother by getting lost, but if you know what you're doing you'll be fine.
