Damage to the overhead electric wires at Manchester Piccadilly means that some lines are blocked. As a result, trains running to / from this station may be cancelled or severely delayed by up to 60 minutes.

Major disruption is expected until the end of the day.
There is damage to the overhead wires at Ardwick Junction.
Information from National Rail website, EMR and train departure boards at Dore & Totley station where potential users are wanting to know how they get to Manchester and the airport now and if someone will pay for their taxi!

Showing as the up/down East lines, so the ones normally used by the Hadfield services. Implying they can use the fast lines instead (from platforms 3 & 4) on which they will cause delays.

I understand a Pendolino pulled the wires down earlier, but not clear precisely where.

Allegedly 1H08 08:53 Euston to Manchester but likewise I don't know precisely where either.
Presumably somewhere between Stockport and Manchester Piccadilly given they seem to be running Euston-Stockport okay, so possibly even at the immediate approach to Piccadilly?

Minor knock-on disruption caused some way away from Manchester Piccadilly. At Crewe, this an hour or so ago, an inbound terminating service I was on was unable to get into its booked platform on time due to another train (bound for Manchester Piccadilly) still being there. Nothing too serious but situation could possibly get worse before it gets better. I'll no doubt find out on my return journey later!

Seems the Hope Valley fast TPE services are running, but much delayed. The stoppers and EMR have stopped!

It has pulled the wires and it’s quite bad around the ardwick area.

Just passed through on the delayed 12:43 Norwich service

Sounds like Avanti & XC are trying to organise RRBs between Piccadilly & Stockport / Macclesfield.

Some photos quickly snapped while on the 30L MIA-LIV. Looks like an evacuation is taking place between Piccadilly and Ardwick Jn. Sheffield train has been stopped at Ardwick for about 90 mins now

Was on Milton Keynes to Picc 1025, stopped at Stoke and everyone taken off, put on Cross Country to Macclesfield then put on another train to Stockport and will have to bus from there. There were coaches booked from Macc.

Edit, the coach from Macc arrived at Stockport, some got off so I got on. Bonus!

Do we know which Pendolino service that is?

390126 on 1H08 08:53 Euston-Manchester

Sheffield train is 2S77, 10:14 Sheffield to Manchester, https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:Y25123/2026-04-16/detailed
69’ late at Belle Vue, then at Ardwick for another hour.
I wonder if they've allowed passengers to detrain at Ardwick. If you know the area it's only 15 minutes walk to Piccadilly. No use for anyone with heavy luggage or who can't cope with steps, though.

There are two more trains stopped at Ashburys and Gorton behind it.

Edit: as I type this the line block on the eastern lines has disappeared and 2S77 has just moved.

Thanks, just seen the update.

Seeing the damage, you can understand why it's affecting everything around there and not just the section of line it's stood on.

Will have passed the last signal, therefore showing as "arrived" at Piccadilly
And the opposite is possible! I've seen a train "depart" on-time because it passed the signal, but it emergency stopped due to people attempting to grab onto the train while moving. RTT says on-time, but the next timing point was 5L. The driver looked like he wanted to attack the two people!!

RTT shows it as having arrived at Piccadilly only a few minutes late. https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:L02235/2026-04-16/detailed#allox_id=0

The photo above begs to differ! 69526 is displayed clearly on the vehicle with the damaged pantograph

It was only 200 yards short of Platform 5.
Any guesses how many Delay Repay claims will initially get rejected because 'computer says arrived only 7' late'...?

For Avanti London passengers there is now LNER Leeds-London acceptance in place, but not, oddly, EMR Sheffield-London which would be the logical alternative now that trains are running to Sheffield.

I'm guessing EMR trains won't have the spare capacity needed to accommodate extra passengers.

On the 1701 to Macclesfield as the 1630 I had booked was cancelled along with many other services.

All reservations still showing on this service and people being turfed out of seats despite it being packed. No announcement from TM that reservations are null.

Absolute shambles
