Could GWR / ROG not consider sending one back up from Laira to retrieve this one? Though neither plan is ideal, and there is always the risk of another 002 Liskeard incident too.
No idea of the answer but is it actually GWR's only when handed over to them at Laira, after delivery by ROG ?

I presume this path is for 175115 to continue on its way to Laira this morning

Gone through Dawlish. Couldn't see the number.

An interesting use of 175001 and 114 earlier, both were on the training run together 5Z13 Plymouth - Plymouth (via PNZ) but were then used on 2E11 vice IET as far as Plymouth before returning to training runs.

I've also taken a look at the May Timetable and it seems to suggest that 5C00 comes off Laira into Plymouth and splits into 2C00 (to PNZ), 3C05 (ECS to EXD) and 3N02 (to PAR). The interesting thing is 3N02 forms the Newquay service of the day. Obviously this'll eventually be dependent on whether there's enough units and crew training has gotten along but it's still interesting!

There are other various new diagrams in the main timetable with a few diagrams being changed to 175s vice IETs in the current timetable.

I suppose if theyre running training runs then they must have a trained driver on board so only need to find a trained conductor? Better than a full cancellation.

It's more than likely whoever was meant to work the service originally is already conveniently trained on the units so could've just taken it on from there, just a guess though!

Confirmed in company communications today that sets will be returning to Wolverton for refurbishment in the near future, including exterior repaint (not vinyl) and an interior refresh.

So I'd assume in the not-so-distant future that newer deliveries will have this refresh too instead of coming down in white and red?

I was hoping to take them before this :'( strikes me as a bit premature when roll out is not complete and these are needed in service.

Still have time to! Plenty of units would need returning and none have showed up in this "new refresh" yet!

I took one a few weeks back, definitely worth my time.

into a GWR livery whose days are presumably numbered; into an as-yet undetermined GBR livery or into neutral "off-white", one wonders.

IIRC the current red and light grey was applied not long before the end of their time with TfW, replacing Arriva turquoise. So assuming that is paint not vinyl, maybe just replacing the red stripe and doors with dark green, and retaining the existing light grey with dark window surrounds, would be adequate. A full repaint seems like unnecessary expenditure, to no-one's great advantage.

Remember there are a lot more vehicles in the 175 fleet than the trains they're replacing, so I imagine there's enough float to get the work done. It's also why a few sets have entered service in advance of a refresh.

There are 12 trains at Laira (8 been through Wolverton). They still need more to replace the 158s at Exeter and two 150s or improvements elsewhere will not take place.

Green 175s incoming then.

Not sure how green will look on a 175 to be fair. Time will tell I suppose. Hopefully the seats will be similar as they are now because they are comfortable.

Yes, still no date for ending GWR contract (was at one time expected to be Autumn 2026), but Chiltern is now 20th September, and usually a gap of 3 or more months, (and 3 months from 20 Sept is 20th Dec, but no one would normally schedule administrative changes Christmas week), so could easily be another 8 months (or longer).

Timeline of Rail Bill getting through Parliament is rather vague, but looking like at least early 2027 before GBR starts.

So if the 175s get a repaint (and of course when they were announced for GWR, should all have been in service by end of this year 2026), would suggest on paper all will have been repainted before franchise expiry or GBR starts. So yes what colour will they get ?

175003 was the first unit to be in TfW livery but it was vinyl and carried out by Aura Brand Solutions, I can't remember if it was subsequently painted.
Also I may have recalled a 3 car having the same treatment but am not positive.

I have tried to add a link but I don't think I have done it correctly.

003 & 107 were vinyl wrapped but the rest were painted, the vinyled 2 were then painted afterwards.

With the Great British Railways stuff, they might not be going green.

Not ironing board seats?????
'Refresh' implies that the original seats will be trimmed in new moquette (and refoamed where necessary). Even some refurbishments (rather than 'refreshes') take this approach; indeed the 175s currently have the original seats but retrimmed and refoamed in 2019-2022.

Thanks for confirming 107 also had the wrap, I had it in the back of my mind a 3 car was done and thinking it was 107 but I didn`t want to put out duff info when I wasn`t sure.

The repaints into TfW colours were carried out at Alstom Widnes along with the internal refresh plus the fitment of at seat 240v sockets with USB ports.

As a side note I hated having to Tech ride the units back to depot as numerous faults were regularly introduced while at Widnes plus having to replace stuff we robbed for the fleet while they were there.

Pleased to hear they will be receiving an interior refresh, as unfortunately they are looking a bit battered and tired inside. That’s no downer on the TfW refresh carried out at Widnes prior to their departure, but the lighting is inconsistent and creates dark patches, the interior panelling (particularly the ceiling panels) look dirty and battered. They could certainly do with an interior repaint to brighten them up somewhat.

PerhaPs the odd, and SliGhtlY NostalGic Alstom PIS, will finallY be rePlaced too (typed that way for effect).

Correct even though a number of the seat cushions and seat backs didn`t quite fit as snuggly as they could have done post refresh.

but the lighting is inconsistent and creates dark patches,

Would the lighting inconsistency and dark patches mentioned be a number or 1 odd saloon/vestibule florescent lights not working in a car or cars as with each car on full lights its not usually dark ?

If a number of saloon lights, half the lighting each side, in a car or cars is not working this is caused by a 110v battery charger fault on one or more cars causing load shed to be initiated on the car the charger fault is on and its adjacent car.
If individual lights then its usually that lights inverter and there were supply issues at times as there were 3 different inverters as I remember but it could also be as simple as a faulty florescent tube.

Works fine, the forum site automatically turns YouTube video links into embedded players that allow the watching of the video directly in the post, though there is a "watch on YouTube" button (changes to a "YouTube" button if playback is started) that opens the video on its normal YouTube video page.

In the long term, surely the 175s will be converted to LED interior lighting, as I think fluorescent tubes stopped being made after 2023. Of course this will also apply to trains in general (I believe that after the first few East Midlands Railway 170 refurbishments that retained fluorescent interior lighting, they came to their senses and did LED conversions for subsequent units).

As we seeing with the XC Voyagers and Southeastern 376s, in the absence of a decision being made on GBR livery, TOCs are continuing to apply their own livery until an actual decision is made to the contrary. All that's been seen GBR-wise so far are some high level concepts issued to the media. I'd happily bet money on at least the first few refreshed 175s going green.

With the Great British Railways stuff, they might not be going green.

So 175101's heading-off to Wolverton. Does anyone know when that might be, and how long it'll be there?

Cheers
