Thoughts on the Trump presidency

I'm wondering if the 25th Amendment might be a likely 2026/7 thing. Coming in to this year I didn't see it and most political commentators were saying it absolutely wouldn't happen, but after this war and the worrying outbursts on Truth Social I hear more and more commentators saying that it could be a possibility.

My suspicion is that Vance is waiting for the mid-terms to do this. If he does, he gets the remainder of Trump's term plus two more full terms (if elected of course), if he does it now he only gets one more full term. It would without any doubt work if he did.

God help the world if Vance gets actually elected (!)

We better all be ready to wear suits and say thank you.

I have no time for Vance, to be fair, nor his policies, but at least he is compos mentis. The danger of Trump this time (unlike last time) is that he is not - he is clearly suffering from fairly advanced Alzheimer's dementia.

Agree, but from all I've seen he's even more far right than Trump ever was/is and from a European perspective it's unlikely to be any better for us.

At least under Trump there's a lot of TACO-ing, many believe Vance could do more long term damage to the world.

I am not convinced Vance would have kicked off the present war - he is sane enough to realise there was no chance of victory. No President, however far right, wants another Vietnam.

Oh, agree, he never would have kicked off Iran but likely would continue this pull away from NATO/supporting other countries. He's very much of the rhetoric of America strong, the rest of the world is weak and we do what we want because we can. And the rest of the world should be thankful if we throw them the odd bone.

The good thing is that he does not have the 'charisma' or showmanship of Trump and therefore I don't think he'll engage the country as much as Trump has. Because like it or not Trump has a humour/personality which people like.

When the Trump Mobile was discussed a few pages back I mentioned that there was a YouTuber who ordered one* and has given several us updates (or not dates) on the progress of his order. He was told at the start of March that they would all be shipped by the start of April, he called again yesterday and was told that they'll start shipping "towards the end of this month".

Video of his call to Trump Mobile showing the interaction with the customer service representative.

*Slight correction. He hadn't actually ordered one previously, he just gave them fake info and they managed to find "his" order. He has now placed the pre-order.

Trump Mobile - another grift from the 'man of the people' full of lies and missed promises.

* Most people who ordered have now been without their money or a product for many, many months.
* Proudly "Made in America" but likely not even assembled in America nor American designed or American in any way.
* Adverts have repeatedly shown photos of other phones 'badged' as the Trump T1 - think it was a S25 ultra in one.
* Specs vary depending on which article you read.
* They claimed they are a new 'mobile network' but they are just a MVNO

All a very typical Trump product!

Do you really think Trump will order the U.S. Navy to board or fire on Chinese ships? Or Indian ships? I don't think so.
At this point I don't think that there's anything that we can be sure that he wouldn't do. He's unhinged.

Continuing his attacks on the Pope, and going so far as to do an AI image of himself as Jesus:

As if we needed any more proof that he's a deranged, senile halfwit.

Yeah I've been thinking that the greatest rehabilitation of his reputation has been facilitated by Donald Trump's two presidencies. Trump has made Bush Jnr look like a visionary statesman...
And he makes Nixon look like a saint. Admittedly a low bar to clear there, but still.

I think he would have done.

The Americans have, apparently, been repeatedly told by the Shin Bet that the Iranian leadership were weak, that they’d be easily toppled, that without the Ayatollah the whole thing would collapse, that the ordinary people would rise up. The Israelis apparently told the Americans it would be an easy win, over in a fortnight.

This whole mess is Israeli hubris.

The Orange Nero may have lost his marbles ages ago, he's reached a new low achieving something Hitler & Mussolini never did, by this extraordinary attack on the Pope.

Taking out his frustrations, re Iran & Hungary etc, on a fellow American he deems to be disloyal to him.

As for that AI generated image, wow...

As they said "they fiddle while Rome burns" then it would be Washington right now. Can the Orange Nero get any much worse, there has to be some sort of intervention soon?

Can his chief of staff try to "muzzle" him, like restrict his social media & unplanned public comments? A very tall order...

I'm sure that there will be an American-labour contribution to those phones. All those "Made in China" labels aren't going to peel themselves off.

As you said, this is a story that has been peddled to Bush Sr, Clinton, Bush Jr, Obama, Trump 1, and Biden. Only Trump 2 was addle-minded enough to not just say "Jog on".

Common consensus is that information is being drip fed to Trump in very small bits of information in small, very easy to understand nuggets. Often aligned to his own point of view as giving him something he doesn't like often ends in their job becoming vacant. Therefore it's quite likely that all the information he's being given didn't discourage him from this action.

Trump probably swallowed Israel's line against CIA advice too, just as he did with Putin's on the 2016 Russian interference.

Oh, no doubt about that at all. The CIA (and every other intelligence agency) told him that Iran was, if anything, years away from having working nuclear weapons before he pulled out of the JCPOA. And that was the somewhat compos mentis version of DJT!

I'm guessing almost all his Truth Social posts are done by someone else, as while he has form for verbal ramblings, I can't see him writing all those up. You can take anyone of these and then finish with "PARKLIFE!" and it would make more sense.

Though to be fair, both probably realised they had far more to lose than Trump does and, equally, though both Pius XI and XII condemned the excesses of the regimes, the general establishment of the Church (not solely applicable to the Roman Catholic Church) was almost certainly a lot further to the right than it is today.

I dunno, I actually think they are him.

If they were someone else I think they'd actually be much more coherent and on-message, not to mention be grammatically correct. I doubt that a staffer would sound so deranged and be posting frantically at 1/2/3am. These are the tweets of someone losing their mind.

I am coming to the alarming opinion that the middle powers of the world (Britain included) will have to force the Strait open somehow. Its continuing closure is too dire. After all, we used to have the Armilla Patrol to ensure free passage.

We haven’t enough ships to re-run a 1980s style Armilla Patrol. But today’s news seems that Trump’s intent on blockading Iranian ports, not the Strait. I guess that’ll last until one of their warships gets hit…

How do they get to the ports without first passing through the Strait?

You can pass through the strait if you‘re not going to Iran, according to their various garbled announcements. It seems highly theoretical, unless they board and control the course of every passing ship.

I more meant how does the US Navy get its ships to the Iranian ports without passing within range of a country that they're currently involved in a war excursion with? Typically attacks on US vessels are deterred by not wanting to start a war.

Do the Iranian's have anything that could potentially damage a US warship? Surely anything they have would be easily picked up and defended against?

I suspect they still have hundreds, if not thousands of Shahed drones. While one or two would be easily fought off, a large swarm might prove able to do some damage. A US capital ship might prove too tempting of a target to pass up.

Ah, I see what you mean. The Americans must know the risk though, they nearly lost the Stark to a rubber boat years ago. You get the impression that Trump hasn’t thought this through…
