I'm in Salzburg, Austria.

I have an EU member state passport but the other passports line was next to us.

I did watch it and saw no stamps.

I don't know about you but there was a lack of the stamping sound.

The border seemed a lot quieter without it.

When you know, you know

Departing Hannover for the UK this afternoon: fingerprints & photo taken. Passport stamped as I'd entered the EU on Thursday, so I had something to match my entry stamp.

One observation: be prepared for questions if anything recent doesn't match. In my case, in late Jan / early Feb I had the following;

Enter Croatia (air); stamp, can't remember if also digital
Leave Croatia (rail): stamp, no digital
Arrive Bosnia (rail): no stamp, no digital
Leave Bosnia (air): Stamp, no digital

The lack of a digital marker on departing the EU at the Croatia / Bosnia border at the start of Feb (and mismatch in stamping at the border, with exit but not entry) caused 15 minutes of unhappiness on the part of the border guard in Hannover this afternoon, and requests from him to me for proof of that journey.... as the digital system incorrectly showed me as having been in Croatia for 53 days.

In the end, a manual entry has been made this afternoon in the digital system, to include my exit from Croatia (/the EU) in February.

A Krakow airport border agent told me that all countries issue stamps, and was not happy that a Spanish border agent had not done so. I showed proof of travel and, eventually, he was satisfied. It was not a good experience.

However, Warsaw are also not issuing stamps. There was a very short queue, though the process of taking photos and fingerprints every time is tedious.

The worst experience I had recently was at Zurich, where there was around 1 hour of queuing time to exit the country. The queuing system was also haphazard, with staff erroneously blaming customers for one queue getting in the way of another. I had higher expectations of Switzerland, so it was a particular disappointment.

There seems to be absolutely no consistency whatsoever, so for anyone travelling at the moment, I would expect delays, and see it as a bonus if there aren't any.

I think the problem is related to travel prior to yesterday.

The problem we have is.

Sometimes the EES has to be used, sometimes it didnt.

Some border guards missed stamps by accident and others (Italy comes to mind) produced stamps with barely any ink, making the stamp funcionally useless.

No wonder border gaurds are getting confused.

Its unfortunate as I suspect border gaurds have to take any suspicions of overstays seriously until it can be proved otherwise.

This is where proof of previous travel is a god send to give them what they need so they can update the system and you can continue.

I don't deny the mis-match in how things were done in the run up will cause more situations like this.

I'll be glad to see the back of stamps. I'm in and out of the EU a lot and my passport is getting full. I do nearly have the full set of cross channel ferry ports though: Dunkerque, Calais, Eurotunnel, Dieppe, Le Havre, Caen, Cherbourg, St Malo and Santander. Just missing Roscoff and Bilbao.

I’ve always been refused when I come home, except at LBA because I used to work there and knew who would give me a stamp, I was refused yesterday at Vienna, she didn’t even have a stamp with her, in Sydney I asked, they show you to a separate desk where they will stamp on request, I went to Kosovo twice last year, if you ask they will gladly stamp your passport, the reason they don’t automatically do it is because Serbia won’t let you in if you have one
I remember I asked for a Kosovo stamp upon entry and they misunderstood me and thought I didn't want a stamp. Everyone around me was offended.

Yes, My passport is getting full but I don't mind the train, port or smaller airport stamps. I only have Dieppe, Eurotunnel and Caen.

Looking at my passport, it seems I've never entered Fuerteventura, but have departed twice 7 days apart!

Exiting Salzburg airport was a nightmare.

They have the EES stations at the boarding gates. So you do the EES first, then scan the boarding card and show your passport to the airline staff directly after.

Because they basically are photographing every non EU national, this causes delays in the boarding process which would otherwise not exist.

There were a few in front of me that seemed to have some kind of update in the system. It took a bit longer to process these and I overheard enough of the conversation to get the general idea.

I asked for a souvenir/by request stamp in my Romanian passport and was denied.

I asked as nicely as I could but was a no can do.

The guy did say have a nice flight, so all was well.

Jealous! I always used to ask for it stamping, even when we were in EU! The lady border guard didn’t even have one, it was really quick, less than 30 seconds, there are no machines, you go to the desk

Departed Vienna yesterday afternoon, all they wanted was a photo when at the booth, no exit stamp

I flew into Prague last Thursday. Whilst I was one of the first off my plane there was no queue for the ESS registration kiosks. There was only a handful of people in front of me at border control. It was so quick that from stepping off my plane I was at Prague main station within the hour. I also had my passport stamped.

I am returning home today and zero queue again at Prague. Fingerprints were checked but this time no stamp.

Passengers forced to spend thousands of pounds to return to the UK after their EasyJet flight left without them said border control delays caused by the European Union's new entry-exit system had been a "nightmare".

More than 100 people missed their flight to Manchester from Milan's Linate airport on Sunday while stuck in what the airline described as "unacceptable" passport control queues.

Some travellers reported vomiting and passing out as they tried to get through biometric and facial recognition checks rolled out under the new European Entry-Exit System (EES) on Friday.

This entry exit scheme is putting me off my annual interrail holiday in July. I have no desire to stand in long queues that last longer than the flight. A UK rover might be the 2ay to go this year.

How have Eurostar and foot passenger ferries been managing?

There's always Ireland...

The introduction of the ESS system has obviously been a shambles. But as far as queuing and delays are concerned, there must be 50 to 100 airports in Europe with flights to and from the UK, as well as ferries and trains. And it’s clear from this board that at most of those places there are no major problems with passing through border controls.

The Milan delays (and there have certainly been others) makes a great news story but as I see it, overall the majority of travellers are not being inconvenienced much. So this needs to be seen in perspective.

If problems increase in the next few months I might change my views but at the moment I wouldn’t let this put me off travelling.

And I am sure there are discussions going on in Milan just now between the border authorities, the airport owners and airlines to try and make sure that doesn’t happen again.

Prague seems to have been well ahead of the game in installing the kit (both kiosks and scanners at entry and exit booths), and getting the system up and running.

I flew into Prague on Sunday. As well as the banks of kiosks just before immigration control, there are banks of them dotted around the airport. There are so many of them around the place I can't see anyone ever needing to queue, especially if you use one before you get to the immigration area. Passport scanned, finger prints taken and questions asked, even though I had already registered on a visit last year.

When I got to immigration, I was directed to one of the kiosks there, but they were happy to let me go straight to the immigration queue when I explained I had already used an earlier kiosk.

There were three immigration queues. EU passport holders were going through the automatic gates - no UK passport holders allowed. A separate queue for UK passport holders with CZ residency - all families with young children were being directed to these couple of booths, and were getting through quickly. And finally "others", i.e. most UK passport holders, who had to queue to have their passports manually inspected.

I queued for about 20 minutes or so, before my passport was inspected (no stamp) and I was let through. Not as bad as some waits I have had at Prague, but longer than I was expecting for a fairly quiet time on a Sunday evening. What wasn't helping was that some people needed to have their faces scanned at the booths, which was taking time. Whether these were people who had been unable to use a kiosk, or had omitted to do so, I don't know.

Note that although you only have to register once every three years, you still have to prove your identity on every entry and exit. At Prague, as I understand it, that means you use the kiosk on every entry to have your picture and fingerprints matched to your passport. Hopefully that should mean it doesn't need doing at the booth, saving processing time, and the resultant queuing.

When I left Prague last year, there were significant queues at departure, because the photographing and fingerprinting were being done at the manned booths, which was significantly increasing the time to process each passenger, with the resultant queue stretching back through the check-in hall. It will be interesting to see how things go when I depart this weekend.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any consistency throughout Europe. Some countries seem to be using the kiosks purely for registration, others seem to require you to use them on every entry (which should save having face and passport scanned at immigration control). Hopefully at some stage we will be allowed to use the automatic passport gates again, but I understand that is up to the UK to negotiate with each individual country.

St Pancras has been managing simply by not doing EES.

You would think they would have to keep the stamping going elsewhere until it's operational everywhere. Then again, I still have a lot of questions about how the stamping system is/was supposed to work anyway, even with Border Guard’s seemingly superhuman ability to find the right stamp.

Even before EES the system was starting to run and border guards could often see how long you'd been inside Europe recorded on the system. I suspect this is fully operational alongside EES, and therefore that is why stamping isn't being done.

I take the Amsterdam ferry from Newcastle and at the port of Ijmuiden which DFDS use in Holland, its been more or less normal with four booths and fingerprints and photos taken where needed or the old stamp method if required due to a large number of passengers. The good boys and girls at the passport checks seem very switched on and get everyone through in a few minutes

Flew into Faro, Portugal last Friday. Partner requires special assistance. Six people off plane went through a priority / disabled route that gave us access to twelve operational fingerprint / photo booths with ground crew standing by to help but we were whizzed past them by the wheelchair driver, and through passport control without getting a stamp (bit of a worry!), and out of the airport before we were even scheduled to land. Meanwhile, we went past the end of a queue of able-bodied passengers in a queue for passport control that went nowhere near the print/photo booths. Interesting!

Last time I went through StP in 2024 I had to remind the French border guard to stamp my passport, he initially just gave it back to me. I wondered if it was because its an old burgundy one (from that period where they'd taken the EU text off the cover but not switched to the new design) and he'd seen too many "blue/black" new British passports to make the connection

Other people were getting theirs stamped so it wasn't some sort of parallel running thing, where you'd expect they'd still stamp every passport and use that as the source of truth if the computer disagreed

Leaving Rhodes today, no change from a year ago, passport scanned but no exit stamp given. Very quick. We were just ahead of a coach party so lucky I guess.

Travelled over to Barcelona last weekend, out on the Friday, back Monday. No issues, took about 15-20 minutes to get through the queue to the new machines, scanned the passport which told me to go to the e-gate, so assuming I must actually be on a system! Straight to the e-Gate and out. Coming back no queue, same again, scanned passport, told to go to e-Gate and through. No one seemed to know what was happening, nor why some gates were red, green or blue

Anyone know though, why can they not just combine the e-gate and these machines. save queuing twice and improve efficiency

WIth the passports getting stamped less and less, then eventually no more in most of the world so we probably will see regular passport books phased out in favour for passport cards and digital passports in the GOV.uk app?

Leaving Warsaw the other day - no stamp (although I do have an entry stamp as I arrived in Schengen before the 10th so I hope this stamp "imbalance" does not lead to difficulties in the future).

Sofia gave me a stamp on Saturday followed by an exit stamp at Svilengrad station (marked as "General Andreevo", which IIRC is the nearby road crossing). Both did fingerprints, only Sofia did a picture.

It was then quite a contrast to get a very bored and quick stamp on crossing the border into Turkey at Edirne!

I've got some stamps that are so faint (Portugal seems to be a repeat offender) that other countries have stamped on top of them!

Well the whole point of EES is to do that tracking, but I expect the reason stamping is not being done is that EES has been declared to be operational from 10 April so no gong back to stamps even if it is not working or being used from time to time.

Frankfurt Airport. Should have taken 40 mins (Frankfurt never has enough windows) but there was a snag for me personally and I had an exciting detour to a side office.... I was told by the long-suffering staff it would only take 3 mins which was true, thankfully. Received stamp
