Indeed water refill is one of the main issues with toilet door lock outs on the 701. Here and there the toilets also developed random faults where it locks itself out for no apparent reason, some with the door slightly open, requiring the door to be manually pushed open which fixes the issue.
5 Road, like 3 & 4, were modified and extended as far as physically possible in the original SWT 10 car plan. The buffers on 5 being very close to Shacklegate Jn. That said they can all accommodate 10 cars each, but there is an authorised walking route from 1-4 sidings that crosses 5 road at it's Southern end to access the crew block etc,. which when left clear, still allows for 10 car to be stabled in clear (both ends) on 5 road.
There is I believe still space enough for CET facilities to be added between 5 road and the shed*, and as as I recall, the Carriage washer was out of use for years, may be still so, which would free more ground space if removed.
* Edited: caveat - I have no experience of CET design/installations, my observations based on CET facilities having been installed against the shed wall alongside 3 TY road at Wimbledon Park.

The bowsers have been busy for donkeys years at Waterloo, as you'll be aware I'm sure, but 701's will be new in that context obviously. The only potential problem is that there use to be a restriction that prevented bowsers topping up on platform 19, which I believe was pretty narrow in places, which was used regularly by 458's on the Reading road, and at the time (without p20-24) the timetable prevented many of the 2Cxx'x being moved lower down to 17/18 etc. Things may well have changed since?
It has not been "one railway" since the whole lot was privatised in 1996 ! That is when the rot really set in which had the "one railway" split up into around 30 different private companies. Hopefully some of this shambles will be sorted out by Great British Railways, but don't hold your breath.
Pretty high odds of both loos going out of action on a 701/0 if it is due to a full waste tank or empty water tank. After all there is nothing to say one loo will be used more than the other. So, once one loo is out of action, the second loo will suffer up to double its usual use and quickly go out of action as its tanks are probably close to needing emptying and/or filling anyway.
Regarding Waterloo. Can the bowsers re-fill 701s ?. I read on the 730 thread that the connection on the train is not accessible at stations - too low to reach from the platform iirc.

I am noticing it on 730s as well.

Certainly up to very recently the 701s could not be refilled with a water browser on platforms. It was mentioned many times internally that it would be very useful if that could be changed since there are a couple of water browsers at Waterloo, and pretty much every 701 in service will end up at Waterloo many multiple times in a day. It was that they could only be refilled at depots. However I have been told they have now begun using the browsers at Waterloo, which is very handy. The issue is, like you mention, one toilet being locked out means the other is used a lot more than usual which uses up way more water. Having both toilets locked out so regularly is not a good look at all, but going forwards it should happen much less, since the water levels in the toilet being insufficient was *by far* the most common reason why a toilet automatically locked itself out of use.

rare sight of 458s at Kingston - presumably so they can use the bay platform (Rounders only running between Kingston and Barnes - through platforms busy with Windsors and Readings as well as Sheppertons, which are all 701s

That is correct yes. They are working the shuttles to Barnes via Richmond as well as Barnes-Windsor, since the 701/0s obviously can’t use the bay platform at Kingston, and there are no 701/5s in service currently.

The 701s are used on metro services in and out of Waterloo. The priority was to design the train with as much room (standing) as possible, so it was decided that only two toilets would be fitted in a 10-car, and only one in a 5-car unit. Every toilet on a 701 is an accessible one.
Some may argue they should have fitted an extra standard toilet or more, but fundamentally the majority of people are not making journeys over an hour on a 701, so the thinking is that extra space will be useful during busy periods of the day (morning/evening peak). Personally that makes a lot of sense to me, but opinions obviously differ.
Could have none like the Elizabeth line and southeastern 707s to name a few

Two was the best compromise for what the 701s were intended for which was mainly a high capacity metro train that would suck up the rush hour peak crowds between Waterloo and Staines and round Kingston + Hounslow sides.

Does anyone know what is happening with 701058? It has been out of passenger service since 25.02.26 which is just as long as many of the 458/4s that received much comment. Other than 028, I do not think any in service 701 has been stopped for as long as this.

701 023 is also on the 15.33 Waterloo to Windsor. For some reason, probably to do with the data feed, RTT isn't picking that up on the unit number search.

Interesting that the usual 701-worked service on this evening’s 5:53pm from W’loo to Dorking was cancelled because “the planned train was replaced with a slower train” (according to RTT) - most bizarre reason ever?

There's only four above 030 to go. 040 has been at Farnham a long while unless it's moved not publicly allocated. 032 only moved back to Wimbledon last week, 055 was the most recent "delivery" and 045 the second most recent. 023 in contrast was the oldest delivery 28th Jan not already in passenger service.
Correct. For Network Rail delay attribution purposes delays or cancellation due to the operator putting different stock to planned is similar enough to be grouped under the same code. In this case the stock is put elsewhere entirely rather than a slower train causing a cancellation. The RTT description focuses on the slower train than planned. The passenger facing system has due to "a fault on a train" rather than "train fault". At a scan think it might be 007 that failed. The 17:53 to Dorking is a frequent candidate for this as it goes empty to Wimbledon depot straight afterwards allowing whatever due to run it to instead run the rest of the diagram of the unit which failed.
It looks like there might be a 701 delivery from Eastleigh tomorrow, SWR operated under own power:

Thanks for the explanation, makes sense - used when, for instance, there's a shortage of 222s and workings are being shuffled.
With a further question. - sometimes the passenger facing system says 'due to a fault on this train' (I think - not always easy to catch) ; am I reading too much into this? (versus 'due to a fault on. a train').
The "This is BTP" announcementss are utterly ridiculous - of course it is NOT - it is the same female voice as all the other announcements - it makes me cringe !
On the subject of destination blinds - nobody has mentioned the utterly stupid destination now shown on 701s for Chessington South - "Ches'ton Sth" (or something very similar) - surely there is room for the whole name, but if not "Chessington S" would be much better or indeed just "Chessington" - don't they want people to know where the trains are going or is it a closely guarded secret ?

701019 was on Windsor side 5Qxx "shakedown" trips this morning (Wed 01/04) - ending at Clapham Yard early afternoon.

Clapham Yard at 1100 today (Wed 01.04.26):
701528+701529 in their usual place beside the cleaning shed - as I watched the brakes released and 701528 moved about a yard towards London - obviously being used for coupling/uncoupling training: Across the yard: 701024 701002 701015 701045 701028 701503 (on it's own) 701522 coupled to another (presumably 701520):
701019 showed up at about 1115 on the up Windsor (platform 3) ECS with banners at the doors to stop access.
At Wimbledon Park/East Wimbledon about 1300: "Top Yard" = 701023 701512 701510 (the two /5 seperate in 8 car roads): Inside the shed visible through a door 701057,
New Sidings (alongside the main line) 701013, 701517 coupled to another (presumably 519) - stangely on the toilet discharge road: Visible through the open doors on 9 and 10 shed roads 701025 & 701042: The door was closed on the road where the commissioning takes plave so unable to see what (if anything) was in there: Sidings round the back by the wheel lathe shed: 701021 & 701007 keeping 458401/002/535 company.
701520 & 701522 were both visible today at Clapham but both had separate 701/5 partners. Anybody know which ones they are as 528 & 529 were in their usual place?
Many thanks in advance, Rob
