Permitted Routes Birmingham New Street to Edinburgh

Considering a return trip from Birmingham to Edinburgh with a railcard Off peak open return cost of £108. On the return like to travel on the Carlisle to Settle line and break my journey for a day or two in Leeds is this route valid with this ticket?

Wouldn't have thought so. The railcard discounted Birmingham New Street to/from Edinburgh Off Peak Return fare (= £108.00) appears to be "route Avanti". Unlikely you could even excess it.

As pointed out, the ticket is route 'Avanti trains only' so rules out any real variation of route, There is a more expensive ticket routed 'Any Permitted' but the permitted routes do not include the S&C beyond Hellifield to Leeds and then on to Birmingham. The only permitted route including Leeds is via the East Coast to York and then from Leeds to Birmingham via Derby.

The routeing guide currently thinks that “Birmingham Group” is prefixed with “G02” for some reason.

With the £108.00 ticket held, could the OP maybe use the Avanti diversions (when operating) via the S&C between Carlisle and Preston? Would then need to pay extra to get to/from Leeds for the overnight stay, and back. £26.95 from Preston with railcard.

Just had another look you are right the any permitted off-peak open return with railcard is £120.80. Then a Carlisle to Hellifield discounted single @ £21.10 Would that work on the Return to travel via The S&C to Leeds break for an overnight stay?

No, because the ticket is valid to Helliefield. You would need a ticket from Hellifield to Leeds and then from Leeds back to somewhere on the same permitted route, such as Blackburn.

There is a cross country service from Edinburgh to Birmingham New Street via Leeds. If I bought an Open return any permitted BHM to EDB as a paper ticket. Returned from EDB via S&C to Hellifield plus a single from HLD to LDS broke my journey in Leeds and then took the Cross Country service that runs from EDB to BHM via LDS the following day would that be permitted?

Technically, no, you can’t jump between routes in the way you describe.
In reality, probably, because nobody would likely know or ask. Tickets being scanned more these days might make this more problematic.
