Hi, is there any TTD’s on here that have started their course yet/recently? I am starting at the end of April in Reading (for Paddington depot). Just wondered if there were any tips/advice that I could do/be doing before starting or is it a case of wait till you start and go with the flow…?
Thanks

Hi can anyone help?I start soon as a trainee train driver for GWR I was wondering if anyone knew what the time frame is for the trainee train driver's salary. I've heard some different stories. And would like to know which one was true I know there's a three year period before you're at top rate but really would like to know how long you're on the bottom rate for and was there any enhancements?I know if GTR you do gain enhancements as a trainee driver that boosts up the money a bit can anyone shed some light on this?

Hi, about a year from application and about 4 months from passing my DMI to getting the medical, then a further 2 months before the start date. I think I got lucky with spaces coming available on the April course and was earmarked for June/July so could have been a further 2 months. What depot are you waiting for?

Again congratulations. It's a grueling process but worth it at the end. I completed my DMI last week for the Paddington depot. Mine is for HEX. Got the email saying I was successful at passing the interview just on a reserve list until spaces open up.

When you initially passed your dmi did the email tell you your on a reserve list until spaces open up?

And good luck with it all mate

Yes basically the same wording. Think the HEX candidates are separate from the main depot and have their own allocation of course spaces. Thanks and good luck to you as well.

Hi all, I have an assessment day next week in Watford and just wanted to know if the MMI is done on the same day and if there are further interviews after this

Hi, it should tell you the schedule of your assessment day in the paperwork you get sent?
Mine was also at OPC Watford. It was a whole day. Morning was the written tests. If you passed you stayed on for the computer based ones in the afternoon and if you passed those you stay for an MMI. You likely won’t find out on the day if you pass the MMI but will receive an email within a week or so. If you have passed there is a DMI to follow with the Driver Manager and an HR person at your chosen depot and then if successful when a place on a training course comes available for you it’s the medical.
Good luck

Yeah, I've been on the reserve list for Plymouth since June, not heard anything yet. Emailed them a few times but they reply that they can't say anything except to say I'm still on the list.

Thank you so much. This was helpful. Hmm, I dont have this. I may need to chase up for it then. Was the MMI a lengthy one when you did it?

I don't think they like to estimate when the next vacancies will be approved. There doesn't seem to be much movement in the South West stations at the moment. Hopefully that will change. Im not sure how it works with the reserve list in whether its like a standard queue or if DMI scores or distance you live from station contributes. I emailed them too and they said if more positions are approved I will be contacted so I'd assume based on that its a standard queue system.

Hi, check the emails, pretty sure it was either on the email or the attachments with the practice material. My MMI was a little over 90 mins.

We'll just have to wait I guess. Hopefully something happens soon.

It’s just a waiting game, that’s just the way the railway works unfortunately.

The unknown timescale is the tough part! I'd rather them tell me now that I have a guaranteed start date in a year. Then again I guess when we're celebrating 30 years with GWR, we can look back at this and have a laugh about it

From Day 1 to the day you pass out you are on the training wage, the wage does not include Sundays of which you are required to work a minimum of 4 during handling, when you are doing handling you can work rest days if your DI does providing the work is relevant and by that I mean if he gets a double Bristol, you probably won’t be allowed to come in for that as Bristol is not a core route.

You are looking at a minimum of 12 months from Day 1, it took me 14 months and that was having a core route DI and doing Sundays and RDW

Yes, just go with the flow. The course is designed to cater for those with no prior operational railway knowledge.

You stay on trainee salary until you qualify. Then the current progression is 80% from qualifying for 1 year, then assuming no issues, 90% for another year the full amount after another 12 months. No enhancements.

My MMI was just over 2 hours. A bit unusual but we just seemed to have a very long chat.
