Weekend First upgrade TPE?

I understand a first class weekend upgrade (bought on the train) is between £10 and £25 (single - how much would it be between Edinburgh and Carlisle (single)? I have senior railcard but that won't apply I presume? Thanks!

It's also £20 for a Weekend 1st upgrade with TPE just from Lockerbie to Carlisle, which is, of course, a much shorter journey!

Sadly the weekend upgrades aren't the most logically priced. £25 end to end, a 3.5 hour journey, but £20 for 90 minutes.

You could also look at seatfrog as it sometimes works out cheaper.

That is logical, because each one sold for a short journey blocks one from being sold for the full route.

Whilst I see your point, the passenger sitting for 3.5 hours generally consumes more food and drink, the passenger on for 90 minutes will have a meal and one drink at most.

I find that the higher pricing for short distance means people tend to skip the upgrade and the seats remain vacant instead.

I think it's £49 for an onboard upgrade from London to Peterborough, and that doesn't come with anything beyond a drink and a biscuit maybe... Either way they're charging you for the opportunity cost of someone else upgrading from London to Edinburgh in that seat there.

I'm looking at buying a couple of tickets for May Manchester to Hull & Return.

I could buy a singles out for £26.20, or a First Class for an eyewateringly £223.80.
For the pleasure of sitting in a slightly better seat in a 185.

Does anyone buy these tickets? Why?
Okay, I am probably a bit of a tightwad and I appreciate people find value in places I don't - its why I drive an old banger that costs me £500 a year and my neighbour pays £500 a month for his car - I digress, but i fail to see the value in the £223 fare vs the £26

It's bizarre that it's a Sunday and pax can just plonk themselves down in First and pay the upgrade. And - some of the journey could be by bus! How those prices appear in the first place beggars belief, presumably it's brainless algorithms and a human would simply change them to something more appropriate?

If you have a discount that works on Standard tickets and doesn't work on First, you will find this happening constantly, yes.

I doubt anyone actually pays £223.80.

In reality, Weekend First would bring the cost down to a more reasonable price.

The fact that TPE think it's remotely acceptable to offer such high fares shows how desperate they are to price gouge.

The saving by booking through us is around £190; no wonder train companies are very desperate for people to "book direct" on their own websites!

I don't know what the Trainline is showing, but an anytime First Return on that route with no Railcard is £174, with a single with no restrictions at £87. Splitting can get that down further, but I'm not sure how anyone gets it over £200.
